I wonder how much money we are talking about. If you sold 100,000 beers a game for 7 home games. How much would the university actually profit per beer sold?
Again, I’m not against it. I’m just curious how much money we are talking. Maybe somebody has some expertise in this area.
(keg of Budweiser is about $100, and has 82 12oz beers).
You must not watch Bar Rescue. If the beer isn't at optimal temperature and poured by a professionally trained beer tender you will lose half your pour down the drain**
People, people, people, settle the 17 down. This is going to happen. Patience and persistence will lead to the inevitable. It cannot be stopped now. The Baptists loaded up and blew their wad by claiming all manner of raping and pillaging and death, dismemberment and destruction, dead bodies errywhare, drunken mayhem, husbands leaving families, alkee-hawlicks errywhare, chillrenz abandoned, societal chaos and breakdown!1!!1!11. None of it happened. The moralists have no platform on this issue.
I’ll do the math....
A 12 oz beer from a keg costs about $1.21 to purchase from a vendor (keg of Budweiser is about $100, and has 82 12oz beers).
If you turn around and sell 100,000 beers per game for 7 home games for $6 each, that’s 7*100,000*6 = $4.2 million. Subtracting $847,000 in procurement costs ($1.21 * 7 * 100,000) from that $4.2 million leaves you with $3,530,000.
You’d probably need, say, 25 workers making 7 bucks an hour to serve the beers. That’s 25 * 3 hrs * 7 bucks per game * 7 home games = $3,675 (a pretty negligible amount). Lets just more than double this to $8,000 in case there are way more servers needed than I’m thinking. That leaves you with $3,522,000.
Finally you have cups, at about 10 cents each. Multiply 700,000 * $0.10 = $70,000.
So, subtract that $70,000 from the $3,522,000 and you are left with $3,452,000 in net profit.
(Also of note, if you increased the beers from 12oz to 16oz and increased the price from $6 to $8, you’d get basically the same profit).
That obviously may not be exact, but its in the ballpark. They are very conservative figures too, considering all costs are based on what any single individual would pay for buying a single keg, pack of cups, etc. The actual wholesale costs that the stadium vendors have to pay for beer / cups is likely far lower. And even still, that’s more money than we are paying Joe Moorhead per year, so its obviously a pretty big chunk of change. And keep in mind that would just be from football. Its a huge untapped cash cow.
As someone who is a recovering alcoholic, I would never be against something like this simply because I know many people drink responsibly and absolutely have the right to. But it also gives me an interesting sort out of outside perspective on how we always feel the NEED to integrate alcohol into everything we do. Some people act like not selling beer at games is some sort of infringement on their rights.
Your math is way off. A keg is a half barrel. You’re doing the math of a 1/4 barrel (or a half keg.). Granted, I haven’t bought a keg in quite a while, but I’ll tell you that beer prices haven’t gone up that much. For a situation like this, the university would be ordering WAY more than the convenience store that you order your overpriced $100 kegs from. In the late 90s, I would drive to Tuscaloosa for kegs for the kegerator. Bud Light was around $63 a keg from Bruno’s grocery store. In Starkville, it was closer to $90 from the convenience store. That was for a half barrel (15.5 gallon, 165-1/3 12 oz beers.)
Dealing straight with the distributor at a massive quantity, my bet is they would be $50 a keg. I’ll say 150 beers per keg to account for the temp workers not knowing how to properly pour a beer and pouring out a lot of head. $0.33 each. $4.2M - procurement (700,000/3) $233,333 = $3.967 M
your math is off on the workers. They’ll need more than 3 hours with setup, tear down, clean up, and most importantly the storage, moving around, and replenishing of the 602 kegs each game. So, 100,000 beers sold within 3 hours is 33,333 per hour. If you have 33 stations (for easy math) with 4 people working per station (3 pouring beers and 1 taking money), you’re talking about slinging 17 beers per minute. Can’t pour them that fast. So 10 workers (6 pourers and 3 money takers, 1 mgr). That’s 330 workers plus people to change kegs. 400 workers x 5 hours minimum (people want to buy as soon as gates open) x $15 (forgot taxes) = $30,000 / game.
I think it is much more realistic that you would MAYBE sale 25-30,000 per game, given the prices aren’t too steep and it isn’t a huge process. And it would likely be 20 oz pours for $6-8.
Cups are ridiculously cheap when purchased in bulk. I’d be supposed at 10 cents per cup when you’re ordering millions.
Insurance, mandatory training of employees, etc. there’s a lot of hidden costs. It’s not the cash cow that is going to put our athletic budget on par with Bama or A&M.
I am all for it in DWS and the Hump. As Many have said, we have a good thing going in Dudy Noble.
So people are losing their **** over Keenum when it’s legally out of his hands. Imagine that.
What Alternate Dimension DWS have you been attending?
If we would have been forward thinking enough to make our campus a resort status the way Ole Miss has (which is why they will be able to sell beer this year and make a profit), we would not have to wait on State law to allow this. So yea, it is his fault.
Yeah if only our leadership was a forward thinking as Ole Miss's..........

There are probably even some people who can't hold their liquor that would be less rowdy if allowed to buy beer.
I'm a big fan of beer however selling beer at SEC football games aounds like a bad idea to me. Sure it will make the school money but I wonder what the effect will be on the in stadium experience.

I agree. Nothing worse that having to sit nearby an obnoxious fan who can’t hold his alcohol.
