Three Top 50 guys including the #1 recruit in the country, two more that have Memphis in their final 2, plus one of the top grad transfers in the country out of Arkansas. He’s gonna have them rolling pretty soon, and it would be awesome if they could somehow get a home and home UK

I have a hard time believing UK would do a series with Memphis, but it sure would be fun to watch.

It's an insane class. Hope Penny is being tidy in these recruitments

He's not just getting the Memphis kids, he's going coast to coast. They are going to be exciting to watch.

Cal and Penny got along great when Cal was recruiting Penny's AAU players. Supposedly sometime in the past Penny told Cal that his goal was to be a Div 1 head coach, so Cal says when it happens he'll put Penny's team on the schedule to help him out. Who knows if it will eventually happen.

Must be some serious dollars behind that Penny.

As we learned from the FBI investigation, the dollar amounts being thrown around amount to petty cash.

Recruiting blue chippers comes down to who can sell themselves as the best conduit to the millions that wait in the NBA. Penny, Miller, and Mitchell played a combined 44 seasons in the NBA. Mitchell was a NBA COTY and spent almost 15 years on an NBA bench. That’s the attraction.

Very doubtful. Way too many "handlers" from the AAU world that want their cuts.

Penny's name and shoes still carry clout with these kids. I don't pretend to know what's actually going on, but if someone told me that it has as much to do with his name, his NBA experience.....and his contacts with endorsements and Nike.

These kids want in the NBA....and they want shoe deals. There is a lot of money in shoe deals. And probably pride too.

It doesn't seem shocking that one of all time shoe legends can get recruits. He probably knows a couple of people at Nike

Happy to see him at Memphis. A couple of UM fans told me today Kermit was going to hire him as an assistant when he got that job. No idea if that was realistic or not, but I like him a lot better in Memphis than in Oxford.

Just do away with the one and done and let these kids go pro out of high school already. That'll help a great deal and college basketball will be a better product in the long run because of it.

I have no desire to watch the current model of the sport. It's just one huge cesspool of sleaze...and football is catching up to it pretty quick. Rant over...get off my lawn!

It's coming. 2022 says the NBA. Couple of years to transition to it.

Seems like the baseball model works, but for basketball 3 years might be a rub.

I think that was just fans blowing smoke. The word was Penny wanted to be a head coach or he would go back to AAU and Memphis East. I don't think assistant at OM was in his plan.

Disagree with 1st statement. Agree with 2nd statement.

As we learned from the FBI investigation, the dollar amounts being thrown around amount to petty cash.

Like most NCAA investigations (cough OM), there's what you are 90% sure of, and then there's what you can prove. Bigger transactions generally have smarter people managing them. I think the same applies to this FBI thing. They catch the dumb-asses fairly easy, it looks like they're doing their job, errbody happy. Except all this pub means some have to go to NCAA jail. The NCAA is on the clock.

But Penny is a different deal. He's not totally polished, but he is smart. Dude could be living on his own island. He's never going to coach at another college. Last thing he wants is any kind of stain. If he could keep that staff together for a couple years, watch out. (DJ might wish he'd signed with State though if Penny gets these last 2 blue chips)

Supposedly OM was thinking of talking to Penny as HC if Memphis kept Tubby. He wasn't going to be an asst anywhere. But OM figured if he was any good at OM then he would end up at Memphis.

Not to mention playing in an NBA arena and some major corporate money backing their program. I have always believed that there is zero reason for Memphis to not be a perennial Top 10 program.

If a coach there could get even 1-2 Top 100 guys every year while filling in the rest of the roster with local top talent, they would absolutely dominate a conference like the AAC on a regular basis

Memphis gets good at basketball about every 20 years... 70’s, Mid-80’s, and mid-2000’s.
Then, they’re forced to forfeit those games and start over. The trend continues.

Some of them aren't so bad now that they're pulling for Memphis football instead of OM football.

I've lived in Memphis 20 years. I don't know a single Memphis fan that roots for ole miss football. Virtually everyone I know hates ole miss.

I do know some ole miss fans that root for Memphis basketball though

Wow. Yeah, there's a lot more to that story. You don't just resign immediately a couple of weeks before the year-end unless something happened.

Also, don't forget that Mike Miller is his top assistant who also had an AAU program. It helps when your best friend is Lebron, he gave Mikes son a shout out on twitter yesterday a 2021 recruit. Kids notice that.

Penny can walk into a house and show youtube clips of him dominating his position in the NBA. Plus his AAU background is huge. He will be able to get players to come and play for him.
Dana Kirk once said that he could recruit a final 4 team to Memphis on his bicycle. Its a hotbed of raw talent.

I agree. I lived there for 20 years as well. Not a single person who was a Memphis State fan liked or could even tolerate UM.

Someone thought “Precious” was a great name for a boy? Was “Kelly” already taken by another male in the family?
