i've met several iowan's through work and family. one was a lifelong friend of the family whom i've always called my aunt. Most seem like fruit of the earth kind of people. I've only ever met one iowa fan though out of all those people. he is ok. a little strange. liberal writer type though. always nice to me. has his nose up in the air about iowa football every time i've talked with him about sports. he definitely describes what you mean about the chip on the shoulder about iowa. You would think iowa was one of the top 5 programs in the country with with the way he looks at it. Don't get me wrong, Iowa is a very respectable program with lots of success. every fan base has those fans though.

It's definitely a credit to the Mississippi State fanbase that it too this long to find our first *******. Congrats!

Will wear that as a badge of pride coming from Yankees. Again, what are you guys on a sec message board? Please explain why you felt the need to tell us anything? And good Knighthawk in taking up for your buddy. Do you guys finish each other’s sentences to?

Well, maybe ....... one way or the other, but I had it explained to me a bit differently. Either way, don't lump us in with east coast, west coast or Chicago. There are 2 very distinct "districts" in Iowa.... you have the Des Moines, Iowa City, Cedar Falls triangle that kinda leans white collar-liberal, and the rest that is much more blue collar, country, conservative types.

Oh yeah Iowa is definitely in the "Midwestern" sub species of Yankee. BTW I do not use Yankee as a derogatory word. Just means some one not from the south.

I am just pointing out that you guys do not speak for all people from Iowa. No more than I speak from all people from Mississippi. You guys are arrogant and pretty much the same as Ole Miss fans. All your doing by explaining more is proving that point, so thank you for that. Again, I just do not understand why you guys are on a state message board? What brought you here? Why did you feel the need to enlighten state fans?

Ummm.... quite a few people actually like to get to know folks from other fanbases, especially when the two teams have never played before. Not only that but to get a little good-humored jostling around going on is part of it. You say that we are "arrogant" for that? Hating everybody who isn't just like you or have your same brilliant insight seems a bit more arrogant to me.... kinda like spouting off about marrying some dude from Guthrie Center makes you know "all about" Hawkeye fans. Stop it. You are embarrassing yourself.

It's fun to learn about an upcoming opponent, and fans, we know nothing about?

I’ve been told by many Big 10 people that State is the SEC equivalent of Iowa.

eh...MSU is the Iowa State of the Big12.
Ive lived here 15 years and view that as accurate from academic and from athletics perspectives.

So much to unpack from the post that started this thread.
lived in Iowa for 15 years now.

- Every Iowan that has ever talked about cowbells has complained about the noise. Its always after MSU plays on ESPN and they happen to see some of the game. They watch a bit so they can talk with me the next day and just end up complaining about the noise. Its funny and a running joke at this point. My office post-New Years will be funny to be at regardless of who wins because so many more will complain.

- The Busch Light storyline is funny- check twitter for an Iowa State message board(Wide Right & Natty Lite) tweeting to their bowl host about the beer. Its been a back and forth ongoing joke. No idea why its a beer that is beloved here, but for some inexplicable reason it is.

- Iowans are Yankees. Not even sure why this is discussed because seriously who gives a 17 at this point- so much migration has made the North v South thing moot for most normal people- but for those that oddly still give a 17, Iowa is clearly Yank+

- The state is quite equally divided between Red and Blue. To suggest liberal views exist only around Iowa City is simply absurd. The DSM metro and the entire NE quadrant of the state are both often blue.

- I have forever been fascinated by how similar Iowa is with Mississippi in many ways. Then there are obvious ways they are quite different too.
- both are predominantly rural farming states depending heaving on agriculture.
- both are similar in population and geographic size.
- both have 2 major conference schools in their state which can really challenge the success in athletics.

- Iowa State and MSU have a ton in common.
- both are land grant institutions.
- both pride themselves on engineering, vet, and ag majors.
- both are small relative to their conferences(in budget, success, etc).

As for Iowa...meh. Its where so many from my high school in the Chicago suburbs went if they couldnt make it into U of Illinois. I have never understood the prestige of graduating from U of Iowa. Its a good college, but its hardly some excellent institution for higher learning- I went to HS with dozens of kids that went there and since living here, i know know hundreds. I wouldnt say its some prestigious university based on those that graduate. Its like any other large university- there are some incredibly smart people and mostly competent people.

If its going to be compared- ISU = MSU and UofI = OM.

Well upon who's decree made you the spokesman for SPS, MSU, or the great state of MS. Hope you're off the rag by New Years. Does Mrs Mannix know you've spit the ballgag out?

also I'll add that my best friend moved from Iowa to MS when we were in middle school. Fella probably saved my life at 16. Still talk to and hang out with him occasionally. Man is like a brother to me, 24 years or so that he's been here and he's almost a Mississippian, still Yankee as hell sometimes though. But he's a salt of the earth guy. I'm willing to bet the same can be said for about half of all Iowans, just as it can be said about half the Mississippians. Thankfully most of ours wear maroon so we can identify each other.

Fellow Mississipians,
Would love to hear more about Yankee-isms.
Is it purely a where you're from thing?
What about the little details, habits, etc.
I love this kinda stuff.

It’s mostly about:
The lack of flavor in most of the food y’all eat.
That y’all don’t put as much emphasis on food.
The way that you-uns (sp?) speak.
Also, southerners are generally more warm. We like to hug each other for no particular reason. Yankees find that awkward.

Wanted to talk ****... Started looking for Iowa memes. It backfired big time. I am going to start looking for property in Riverside, cause I don't know who's running that town, but I like their style.

Allow me to add a little detail from a MS perspective.

To my Iowa Brethren:

  • Expect polo shirts and dresses on gameday.... I know, its weird. That's more an Ole Miss thing. They're the pricks that time forgot. Some of us will and some of us will be at the game wearing overalls and camoflauge. Sometimes at the same time.
  • "Bless your heart" is not necessarily a good thing to hear from them Indeed it is not.
  • Get over the cowbells.... they "ring responsibly"Yeah, sure, of course. Responsible. All the time.
  • Be good natured with the ribbing, folks from the South tend to get defensive quicker than us If we know it is football related and ribbing thne we are good and most can give as well as take. As soon we we thing it is a knock on being from MS, Southern, or against MSU then we have a saying...A Southerner will be nice until he's mad enough to kill you.
  • "Coon-***" is not a racially derogative thing. That term is normally reserved for southern LA cajuns
  • If a MSU tailgate offers you oysters.... TAKE THEM UP ON IT. Trust me, its a completely different experience than that gelatonous crap our parents make oyster stew out of. Charbroiled oysters are a thing of art in Mississippi I'd confirm they are actually oysters that came from the ocean.
  • Even if the Dawgs are blowing out the Hawkeyes in the 4th quarter, a single good play from the Hawks, or a penalty against the Dawgs will send the MSU faithful into full panic/meltdown mode.... apparently they have had some rough luck with 4th quarter endings over the years. The A&M game I went to in 2014, MSU was winning by a substantial margin and A&M had a big play. I asked my buddy why the crowd was so damned quiet, and in unison he and his son both replied "We've seen this movie far too many times We have seen it too many times, but we also want to dominate every play of every game. Weakness is not allowed.
  • Mississippians are good people, except of course Southern Miss fans, those Tigerhawk stealing jerks Throw in Ole Miss. They are the absolute worst. They've been described as Alabama arrogance with Vanderbilt's trophy case.

I am stealing that last quote. Got too many Ole Mi..... err...I mean..... Mississippi fans as acquaintances.

  • Iowans are NOT Yankees.....

Native Mississippians will have a tough time believing that ya'll Iowans are not Yankees (not that there's anything wrong with that). Many of us have visited the Vicksburg National Military Park numerous times. The Iowa State Memorial is a substantial and beautiful piece of architecture there, and it reminds us that Yankees do come from Iowa.

FWIW, I have liked all of the Iowans I've met, and the Hawkeyes are probably my favorite BIG team. I hope that you guys get to see some great football from our Bulldogs and that your fanbase comes away with some better reasons for not wanting to play MSU again.

Calling someone a Yankee in 2018 is kind of like driving around with a set of bull balls dangling from your hitch... Why?

What I learned growing up: Yankees wear white socks to church (from my grandmother) and they don't touch their nose to the ground when doing push-ups (from my little league coach)

I went to a minor league baseball game in Beloit WI one time. Happened that 5'-nothing shortstop from Louisville was playing there.

Bunch of yankee women wearing wife beater t's, showing off their side boobs.

Not a thing you'd see at DNF or Trustmark Park.

Great post. Only thing I take issue with is the "not being yankees" thing. I farm and have dealt with some farmers/Ag businesses from up that way (especially at tractor pulls). Nice folks but definitely yankees.

How do you define "Yankee"? Anybody north of the 35th parallel? Those whose ancestors fought for the North? The war was over about 160 years ago. A Yankee is really a New England resident, or to the Brits, all Americans are Yanks.
