I also liked the Poe/Admiral subplot which is why if you had to pin me down on recommending an option, I'd ultimately go with Finn not being stopped but one thing Rian Johnson spent a lot of time on with this movie is that he emphasized not looking at the past to see how things will go-- he wanted to surprise people and force people to look towards the future, which I like.

Finn's move if successful would have been very reminiscent of Rogue One and Johnson did not want something repetitive and comforting-- he wanted to clear the series to be open for different possibilities and I think he did that.

Empire was hated when it came out as well. TLJ isn’t as good as Empire, but I think it will be appreciated more as time goes on. I’ve seen a lot of people that weren’t sure about it after the first viewing but LOVED it the second time. I will be going to see it again sometime this week.

I have a feeling that after IX comes out, you are probably right. I do get the hate. Luke was untouchable in many people's eyes and they think that is the end of his story

But I don't understand why they don't want the Star Wars story to expand and change. The last scene excited me and my sons so much when we were discussing the possibilities of the future.

For a lot of those people they are OK if Star Wars changes- but they want it to change how they want it to. And if that doesn't happen then "Star Wars is ruined".

In many ways I'm glad we're not getting a total rehash of the original trilogy or the old EU "legends" made into a trilogy.

It has been three days since I have seen it, so I've digested it. SPOILERS!!!!

Overall I liked it OK. I didn't like there being humor or someone saying something smartass in every scene and I didn't like the Leia can use The Force now scene. I did like the scene where Kylo Ren and Rey fight together and I liked Luke in the movie and how he owned Kylo Ren in the movie with the Force. It just shows just how powerful Luke is with the Force.

Poe, Finn, and Rose screwing up I think makes them less likable as characters but it does make them more "realistic" I guess. I loved that Kylo Ren killed Snoke. I kind of wondered why Vader never did the same to Palpatine...well until the very end.

The only other complaint I had is it was kind of jumpy...but that was because they had things going on in three fronts at the same time.

The nerds are trying to ruin Star Wars as much as Disney is. If things didn't happen the way they want it- well then the movie sucks. Like- Rey not being a Skywalker or a Kenobi. Sorry nerds...she just had really crappy parents. And sorry there isn't going to be a deep exploration into Snoke's character and background. Although we probably get some of that in episode 9.

That said, I think Disney is overdoing Star Wars with a new movie every year. If it were me I would put out the Han Solo movie and episode 9 and then take a break for about five years.

Poe, Finn and Rose screwing up? Not sure why you are choosing only them to single out for failing. Every single character in the film failed in their task.

Did you guys not catch this? Yoda even discusses failure. It was a theme in the entire movie. Learn from you failures. Especially your failures.

To me, Rey didn't screw anything up. She trained and got stronger with the Force. Maybe failed at getting Kylo Ren to turn to the light? Maybe. Even if she did it was Rey and Chewy distracting the Tie fighters at the end and destroying all of them and then Rey saving the few remaining living members of the Resistance using the Force to pick up the rocks so that they could all get out of the base alive.

Kylo Ren earned himself a promotion by killing Snoke and taking over the First Order. Yeah, maybe he failed to kill Luke and all but 20 people in the Resistance but he succeeded a lot more than he failed.

Poe nearly got the entire Resistance destroyed. He cost them all of their bombers and he hatched a plan that failed when Leia and Admiral Holdo already had a plan in place and didn't tell him because they demoted him for being impulsive. At least I assume that's why they didn't tell him. Finn failed because he got caught and didn't even get the master codebreaker that Maz told them to use. Rose was along for the ride.

Contrast that to Empire where:

Luke lost to Vader but in doing so he created a diversion that allowed his friends to escape.

Han got caught but it was because he was double crossed by Lando. In the meantime he got them out of danger with both the Empire multiple times and the weird space creature that ate them for a little while.

And I'm not saying that their characters need to be perfect and everything that they do should work out every time. But I am saying that they would be more likable if they did it at a higher rate.

Rey failed to get Kylo to switch to the light side
Poe failed in his mission along with Finn and Rose to get on snoke's ship and disable the tracking device
Luke failed Kylo at the training school
Snoke failed to see that Kylo was going to betray him.
Leia's plans to get to the base and call for reinforcements failed
R2 even failed to get Luke to come back by playing the ultimate trumo card the message that started this whole story

Also I really liked this article.

Damn, just watched and am pretty disappointed. Didn’t learn **** about snoke, and further more they killed him (the obvious strongest character in the two movies). Luke’s death was cheesy.

I liked Kylo a little better in this one, at least.

Talk ugly about me too, but I thought it was a great movie. They did great with Luke. Would have been nice to have killed off the princess and left Luke, since He is still around for potentially taking part in another sequel and she isn't .

Hea! I am 67 years old. I saw the first Star Wars during my first year of work out of college and I am now in my second year of retirement after a long career. I will not make it that many more years and will thoroughly enjoy a new Star Wars each year for the rest of my life.

How about this - watch the next one and then skip 5 years while those of us who would die with two or three at your schedule suffer to keep you happy.

Finally saw it today. I was a teenager when the original came out so I have followed it as it had evolved.

I liked the movie overall. That is effectively what I have always thought of Luke. He has always been insecure and I very easily see the way his character arcs in this as valid. ObeWan effectively dies in the same manner in 4. He is not really there when Vader strikes him down. The Jedi have never been these perfect warriors that they are in legend. They have made human errors and are subject to all manner of human frailties throughout the saga. They continue to learn and grow.

The Del Toro character brings something totally new to the Star Wars world. It has always been an ideological struggle. It is Fought by true believers on both sides. This character and the Casino planet brings in those who do things just for the money and exploiting the political situation. They really don't care which side comes out on top. This is a reality in all social struggles.

Rey is probably the most stable Jedi character to exist. She is not fearful of the Dark side. She is sure in what she believes. She is not looking for something ethereal and is definitely not scared of it. Seems every other character with high Midi-chlorians has a struggle with their place in the universe and is always worried they can be turned.

So I enjoyed this expanded universe. I don't really get the criticism other than it is not what someone wanted to happen.
