I am about to go on a series of trips and I have recently gotten into podcast. I have listened to S-Town(really good) Serial, Up and Vanished, and I am currently listening to Very Bad Words which talks about the origin of curse words. It is pretty interesting and something I have always wondered about. Anyone have any recommendations to add to my list to pass the time on long trips.

The Last Podcast on the Left is really good. It's 3 guys that I think are comedians by trade. They have tons of episodes so plenty of topics to choose from. They do great research and are very funny and entertaining.

Mike Rowe - the way I heard it. Most are about 5-7 min after the initial ad. They are essentially like the old Paul Harvey "The Rest of the Story" radio shows

S-Town was one of the strangest, most fascinating things Ive ever heard. I generally listen to crime related podcast. Usually intense and you need to pay close attention.

My new favorite is The PAt McAfee Show - 4-5 guys sitting around shooting the bull and making fun of recent topics. A good bit of sports, very little politics (make fun of both sides of the aisle when they do), recent US and world news, a segment every show about Kim Jong Un (they call him Jim Kong). They also have a guest every show. 75% of guests are sports related. John Daly was great. This one is a lot less engaging than other podcast I listen too and has lots of cursing.

LORE and STUFF YOU SHOULD KNOW are two of my favs. LORE will be enjoyed by those who like creepy stories. HIDDEN BRAIN, TIM FERRISS (dude can run a long podcast), FREAKANOMICS RADIO, and ART OF MANLINESS are enjoyable as well.
I also listen to it all at 2x speed which makes it faster and kinda funny.

My main rotation:
The Editing Bay (good movie review podcast, about an hour apiece. Hint: it's better if you've watched the movie beforehand)
Dan Carlin's Hardcore History (really really really good long form look at series of historical events, but only 1 or 2 come out a year)
Radiolab (good indepth discussions on topics that are just outside the mainstream)
30 for 30 (new podcast from ESPN. more like Radiolab for sports than the 30 for 30 documentaries.)
ScreenJunkies Movie Fights (it's the audio from the YouTube show. Pretty funny if you're into sci-fi, superhero, or horror movies)
Welcome to Nightvale (local radio program from an alternate darker reality)
Alice Isn't Dead (follows a female trucker's CB stories as she fights off monsters through the south and southwest)
The Way I Heard It (Mike Rowe's Paul Harvey-like 'rest of the story' in 10 minutes or less)
StarTalk (Neil deGrasse Tyson's podcast on space and science)
Playing with Science (discussion on the science behind specific behaviors, equipment, etc. in sports)
Stuff You Should Know (nice, easy to digest breakdown of specific topics.)
Ask Me Another (Trivia show from NPR)
LeVar Burton Reads (kind of like an audiobook, but LeVar Burton actually acts out the parts. pretty new.)

Of course, my go to's for Mississippi State:
More Cowbell with Brandon Walker (maybe search for 'SEC Country Mississippi State Daily')
Boneyard with Steve Robertson
B&B Show with Brian Hadad & Bob Carskadon

The Bully Pulpit that Matt Wyatt was doing for Mississippi State was really good, but it hasn't had an episode since May. Still, it's worth going back and listening to. There's an episode on Everett Kennard, Burke Masters, Jack Cristil, Women's Final Four, etc. that are really good. Search for "Mississippi State Athletics".

Dan Carlin's Hardcore History is the best.
His political show, Common Sense, is really good if you aren't extremely in favor of one party or the other.

Joe Rogan Experience is pretty good if you dont mind crude humor. Talks to all sorts of people, from Physicists to pseudoarcheologists to MMA people.

I like a lot of the ones already mentioned here .... only one I'll add is The Moth. It's people onstage telling crazy/funny/sad stories about things that actually happened to them. Pretty good.

Pat Mcafee show is incredible. Start listening now.

Thank you, very much. Just listened to my first episode. While not the most reverent podcast I listen to, I'm dying right now...

As far as podcasts go...

I've been listening to them for over 10 years, and I subscribe to well over 100. I'm a bit of an addict.

I have a binge approach to them. I find a given interest (Specific sports team, political view, travel destination, technology, or faith-based), subscribe to every podcast I can find related to it, and then binge listen to scratch a particular itch. For example, I subscribe to 4-5 podcasts that are related to my favorite baseball team. I'll listen to those, all in a row. Next day, I may want to binge on tech podcasts. The next session, I'll binge listen to State podcasts. I stream, and seldom download them.

I used to run scripts on my Mac, to download streaming radio programs, convert them in to podcasts, and add them to iTunes. THankfully, more radio programs have embraced placing their archives in podcast form, and maintaining RSS feeds.

My favorites, that are of a somewhat general nature, and in no particular order:

Beyond Yacht Rock - The guys who did the Internet TV show Yacht Rock, and the "inventors" of the genre, talk about music.
No Agenda - Adam Curry & John C. Dvorak - News commentary, media assassination, crackpottery.
Travel with Rick Steves - Podcast of weekly radio program. Guests and Calls about mostly European destinations
This Morning with Gordon Deal - Used to be the Wall Street Journal morning news radio show.
Shutdown Fullcast - The SB Nation types irreverently discuss College Football, on the most casual of levels.
The Solid Verbal - The best College Football fancast, as far as I'm concerned.

Outside of these, I listen to a lot of Baseball, Mac, Disney, Chicago Cubs, New Orleans Saints, and Catholic Church related podcasts. (Did I mention I was a podcast addict?) . If you are interested in any of these specific topics, I can pass those along. But my post is already egregious in its length.
