Contraire, mofraire...I always thought that integrity WAS doing the right thing. What a freaking idiot. Surely he meant that differently. I always told my players, "Integrity is doing what's right when nobody is watching." Obviously, ole Hugh doesn't see it that way.

We could go with Meriam Webster

the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles; moral uprightness.

Or... whatever a bucktoothed sleazeball in Oxford says it means.

I've tried mentally inserting commas, stressing different words, and a few other things and I still can't make his statement make sense. He must have either been misquoted or screwed up what he said. Or worse yet, maybe he really thinks that??

I think his point was that integrity is doing right after you screw up, but he sure fumbled the delivery.

But integrity, you know, like attacking a couple of college kids, suing them, lying to media about what's in a notice of allegations, lying to your recruits so that the kids will still sign with your team, blaming a previous coaching staff for violations when the bulk of them are yours... that kind of stuff isn't integrity.
REAL integrity is owning up to your mistakes and making them right after the fact, much like we are seeing... oh, nevermind.

Bucky version .. ""Integrity is doing what's right when the NCAA is watching. Follow the 'plan' when they aren't looking."

The full quote is

"Integrity, I had to re-evaluate. Integrity is not always doing what's right. I used to think that, but none of us would have integrity if that was really how we define it because I doubt any of us have done the right thing all the time. Integrity is when an issue arises. You own it and move forward."

I hate that so many people are cherry picking that one sentence. The entire quote gives you all of the context and it is still stupid.

Integrity is defined as the quality of being honest and having strong moral principles. It's ridiculous that he would mention integrity at all because it applies both to what OM did originally and how they have responded. They lacked moral principles when they made the "mistakes" and when they didn't own it.

How he can stand there and act like the university properly owned up to what they did is beyond comprehension. The last sentence should be the story if you are going to cherry pick a sentence. We have all seen their response openly for the last few years. There is no denying that they lacked integrity.

He keeps saying "He owns it", and then goes on to explain how none of it is his fault. That's ain't "owning it".

I haven't noticed Hugh himself saying he owns any of the wrongdoing, but more the 'program' as a whole. He's carefully wording that sort of thing. I think he says it generally but the vibe I noticed from him is that he's saying he can't control everyone and the 'mistakes' were outside of his control.

So when you fall short of the goal, don't change what you are doing to be better. That's c-razy! Just redefine the goal to make it what you've already attained. Problem solved. I'm going on break!

What an asshat.
