Sure don’t love me some plaid coat wearing Oats like you do. Guys a joke. Sorry for your loss
Meant nothing to me. My team lost their 2nd game. You put Oats at a school similar to UK and then you can talk. Until then, humpty dumpty is the biggest failure in college basketball.

Guy has been a head coach for 6 years. Feel like yours was.

Ok, yeah he has been a college head coach for 6 years. How many does he get in order to get past the Sweet 16? He was the #1 seed. He isn't at Buffalo anymore. He didn't take over at a school with no resources.

Anyway, you know I like you man but it seems weird to die on the hill for a guy who isn't our coach and likely never will be.

Playing devil's advocate mostly because I hate the Cal cult thing. I mean the other side could be called anti-Cal cult...it is just stupid and divisive like a political thread....

If you look at a guy who is an "up and comer" like Oats and he has achieved zero success in NCAAT and want him over a guy who is older, has done it before and is current coach I think some just tend to believe the current guy could change and fix it.

I believed this for a while. I don't really anymore. I think if the class holds up and he gets the guys he wants it will tell the story and he will either win or go home and retire or quit.

Personally, give me someone who has won something of consequence....

If the ultimate goals is winning the NCAAT then when she be getting someone who has done it well before or have a very serious feeling that the person is on the door step about to knock it down.
Rupp, Hall, or Tubby never get the job based on that criteria.

Program was built to last by Rupp. Hall maintained and elevated in some ways. Pitino rescued it and had running likd machine. Cal did too until simething happened. He ain't gonna change. E V E R.

Oats is a good option, but the only option. He's not the end all be all. He has done things at Bama that have never been done before. Bama has resources true, but they don't care about bssketball near the level of places similsr to UK.

How nany years did Cal coach before he got past the S16?

I don't think he will change either

6-7 I think at UMass. Which I mean...that place was a sh*t hole when he got there. That isn't even comparable tbh.

He also was in early 30s I would think.

It took Calipari 7 seasons to get Massachusetts beyond the S16

Ehh last 3 years. No doubt. Before then I'd say I would take how firmly in the hunt we were. Oats currently had more talent and the #1 overall seed and still didn't get it done. Let's see if he keeps it up.

Oates and Muss both run spread offense, ball screen, pitch it out for 3. When they run into someone that can stay in front of them they have no answer. They run almost zero offensive plays. They ran a few double screens for Miller and that's about it.

Edit I am ready to move on from what we have so no i'm not taking up for our guy, just my observation of watching them for a few years.
Both Oates and Muss really space the floor to put defensive players in long close outs. If you are having an off night there aren't many offensive players in position to rebound. So you end up with a lot of one shot possessions. The spread offense also leads to small guards attacking the rim. Many of them go until they get into trouble. Then they take a crazy shot or get their shot blocked. SDSU blocked a ton of shots in the second half. They really played some defense tonight.

I think Cal has had 3 overall #1 seeds at UK. 1 title. "Ehh last 3 years" tells me all I need to know.

33% on titles isn't the worst when being the 1 lol I would love to know what % of 1 overall seeds win the title.

Yeah I don’t understand the Oats sucks thing to feel better about Cal. Oats has been at a p5 non-basketball school in the same conference as us for 4 seasons. He has the same win % in and out of conference as cal with 2 league championships and has 2 Sweet 16’s. If you aren’t good with his performance you really can’t be good with Cal’s at a school like UK

Oats has won the SEC regular season and SECT twice in three years at the top football school. That is not easy to do.
Lol. Almost his words.
I mean i guess if we want to settle on SEC titles. Lets hire Oats

True… Cal has underperformed and Oats 3 or layup cant win title.
BOTH can be true

I love his defense. He'd get better players here then UVA and his players are good as it is.
Such a boring style to watch. And besides his 1 miracle year, he gets smoked by inferior teams year in the first weekend. He hasn't even sniffed a final four prior to that title year, or since.

Yes multiple things can be true. It’s true that oats hasn’t won one. Jay Wright also has 2 nc’s with playing 4 and occasionally 5 men out.

Apparently can’t win one with the dribble into the ground offense either unless you have a generational defender that gets you all kinds of transitions buckets off his defense around the rim and could also switch and play shooters. And that was playing the game a decade ago when it was still not what it is today with skilled guys being valued more than just being uber athletes with long bodies.

People just don't understand CBB has so much parity now. Having Duke or UK on your uniforms doesn't win you Jack now. Everyone's good. Cal has problems he should fix yes, but acting like there's some mythical God out there that's gonna mimic his 2009-2017 run..I mean you're probably never gonna see that again from ANY program.
EXACTLY. With the arrival of the transfer portal and NIL, the days of dominant 1 or 2 loss teams are over imo.

Virginia is now a top -3-4 program now. They have been for 5 years now.
