People keep saying that Cal wins because the players he recruits are so good. Couldn't you say that about most coaches who have great records? Look at Phil Jackson and Steve Kerr. Would they have
been so successful without great players?
Would the 2 coaches who will compete in the Superbowl have made it there without great players?
Cal deserves some criticism. The criticism on this forum is way over the top. This team could still make it to the tournament if everybody on the team could stay healthy.
Do you think U Conn had the talent UK did when they beat us twice and won the NC. How about Virginia when they won the NC. Some coaches can take the other teams players and beat theirs, or take their players and beat yours. Bear Bryant was one of those in football. In other words, you're insinuating that coaching doesn't matter that much. Now you're sounding like Cal, making excuses. Other coaches have injuries. I believe Arky had their best player out, I believe Smith was his name. I have never seen a team start with only 4 players because of injuries. They ALL put 5 players on the floor. My criticism with Cal is, he's a bad coach, throws players under the bus, and makes excuses. I cannot imagine what would have happened if I had made an excuse when flying in the Air Force. Excuses are for losers, and no one wants to hear them.

Look at Mark Stoops.

He's had sub par players nearly his entire tenure at UK. How could he win?

He's not a bad coach. He's in the Hall Of Fame. Kentucky has had injuries occur before every loss I believe. Arkansas has won only 2 road games this year. Their coach hasn't made it past the Sweet 16 in the tournament according to other posters. As for throwing players under the bus, many of you were accusing Cal of being too soft on the players just this morning!

Arkansas has played in the last 2 Elite 8's.

Here's the thing about Oscar, he hasn't had a great year. He is responsible for his offseason. We know what he can/can't do. My personal issue isn't Cal calling it out. It's not doing anything about it. If the Head Coach feels that way, then take him out/sit him and play someone else until he does what you want him to do.

Whether fans say something or not doesn't matter in end because none of us control anything. Giving an opinion/sharing info is one thing, but at the end of day it's pathetic for a Coach to complain about a player not doing what needs to be done and then seeing 35 mins played next to said player's name. That's why he gets $9M a yr and it's his job. Maybe the next time he's worried about all things outside of his job description in the world, he should pay more attention what is/isn't going on within the program he's at the helm.

I should have made sure I had all the facts before I discussed Arkansas. I still don't know what the fascination is with that coach. He seems unstable at times to me.
As for Oscar, I don't think Cal has any other option at times to replace Oscar. Georgia's center would have totally dominated Collins or Ugo.
If Cal criticized Oscar, it is because he is facing so much criticism this year. People won't like this. I believe Cal let fan criticism get to him and it affected his recruiting.
Cal's best teams at UK have been full of one-and-done recruits.
He went away from that model and for the last few years he has recruited too many transfers in my opinion. A lot of these transfers simply aren't up to Kentucky's standards. I expect Kentucky to be back at the top next year.

"He missed all kinds of plays.."

Wtf?
I have no respect for a coach who blames his players. I coached 26 years, played for two high school coaches and one college coach and never once did I or my old coaches ever not take the blame for a loss. It is a coaches responsibility to prepare his team for every game, the coach decides who plays and who sits, the game plan if there was one is on the coach.

Everyone in the “Gameday” chat said the same thing about Oscar. You know who you are, so don’t come to this thread and call out Cal for calling out Oscar when you fools did the same thing.

Musselman's also learning what it's like to coach high profile FR roster and his best player/FR is out with injury most of year (Nick Smith). He's proven to be a good NCAA coach with less talent and he's solid, but I don't prefer him over Oats, who I view as this generation's Pitino in terms of building a system/approach and investing in it to the point everything is cohesive in style of player, how they develop and recruiting is picking up as players are attracted to it.

Cal needs to play Ugonna and Collins more IF he's angry about things Oscar's not doing. It's just what you do. If you are going to lose, lose with guys who are going to get something out of the minutes and do what they are asked to do. For instance--Collins should've played more Tuesday. He was the better of he/Oscar that night. Doesn't mean today--but that night-he should be playing. It's also not something you want to hear as a fan but coaches are coaching for next year too--I'm picking spots to develop someone I plan on playing next year to get some minutes. 7'0 who can block shots, run the court and have good hands, will get 5-10 mins for me knowing that there's growth/room to improve. We know what Oscar is going to be good/bad. Some nights 25-28 mins is good enough for Oscar.

I agree 100% with your take on his best teams and their roster makeup. That's not an excuse at all. Great take/point. Also agree with you on the transfers and more importantly the type of transfer.

Next year....some work to be done with the roster still. This isn't an elite class where having top ranked/highly ranked FR assures a top team/high Draft pick potential. But I do love Edwards as being top guy in this class right now and think he's special. Dillingham and DJ should be fine but not elite NBA athletes. Reed is going to be a great player--think of him like Ty Jerome who played at UVA. Bradshaw is offensively as good as Nick Richards was his JR year entering CBB--but he's skinny and has to get stronger. After that...who stays? Who plays? Oscar won't be returning no matter what from what I was told. Toppin's gone. Do you want Reeves or CJ back? Wheeler's gone. Livingston?? Collins? I'd want to keep Ugo and Thiero who I think has a ton of upside/potential but you could make a claim that a big time 4 man is needed and even another wing but how they go about that will be interesting.

It's interesting. Most of you are ranting and raving about Cal "throwing Oscar under the bus". Do you know who "threw Oscar under the bus" after the game? Oscar did. He admitted that he made mistakes on defense and missed assignments. He said that the players need to do a better job of following instructions from the coaches.
Oscar is a grown man. He can handle constructive criticism from his coach.

I think I agree. We simply aren't very good defenders. Is it speed, strength, reaction time, commitment, lateral quickness? I don't know.
It’s lateral quickness Dread. That’s without a doubt our problem and why we can’t guard or break anyone down on offense either.

We just aren’t quick enough and that is a huge factor in todays game.

Other teams may not have quite the talent level as us but that’s offset by their quickness

You seem to be in the know on several fronts and maybe you can answer this several media members insinuate there's a huge rift in the locker room but nobody will expound on it. Could you please explain it? How did this team go from the Bahamas to this team who hates each other? If you can't I fully understand! Thanks!
