That's a big upgrade.

One of my biggest pet peeves of sports media is how one person can hold on to a job for 40 years. Whether it’s an announcer or a writer, that’s ridiculous. That’s less opportunity for others. No one else gets a shot for 40 years? No one else could possibly do a better job or offer a different take?

It’s why I’m always happy to see a new announcer get a shot. But in terms of a beat reporter, I have no idea what was so unique and special about a guy like Tipton to hold that position for four decades.

Also, as a beat writer, you’re not supposed to be a cheerleader but you shouldn’t be a contrarian constantly either.

I’ve told the story before but had to work media at Rupp for a taping of Top Chef (think that was the name of the show). Everyone was told to wear blue or white in the building for the show. Everyone did. Except for the guy sitting beside me who decided to wear orange. His name?

See? That’s the kinda behavior that makes people hate you. Like why was it so hard to wear a blue shirt? Nooooo. Tipton just thrived on being a miserable prick. No one likes that.

Yes, from the standpoint of dispassionate information-oriented reporting, it is a huge upgrade. Roberts will have the respect of UK's coaching staff. Tipton never did have it. Roberts digs for accurate recruiting information. Tipton couldn't care less.
