Wheeler had 6 turnovers against St. Peter's because he had to do too much because Grady, Tyty & Mintz sucked. Why do people keep singling out Wheeler but ignoring the dog crap performance of the other 3 in our 8 losses? Wheeler by far had the best performances in our losses for the most part (although his competition was lacking as the other 3 were hot garbage).

I agree that I want another PG to come to the team for depth and perhaps to push/take Wheeler's spot as competition is great, but people with the 4 on 5 crap are a bit over the top. As I said, we were 1.5 on 5 against St. Peter's as only Wheeler & Oscar showed up really to try to make plays and Toppin off the bench in the 1st half when Cal remembered he was on the damn team.
Maybe because they are all gone? But Wheeler was also bad in that game and that guy's shot is plain broken. We are going to have a lineup that is likely Wheeler,Wallace,Livingston,Toppin and Oscar. One guy in Wallace who is a pretty good shooter. How do you see that working?

A couple of pumpers and a couple of guys who seem hesitant about Wheeler and probably altered their opinions after he came back. That’s my read.

the “he’s like hagans line is all you need to know. A 5’8” hagans good grief.
He’s better than Hagans. In fact Ulis was the only other pg in the Cal era than had more than 4 more assists than turnovers. Wheeler is a back to back all conference player for a reason. If he did have a good shot, he’d be an all American. But I’ll settle for all conference

You will also settle for no final 4 with him.

I’m glad he is back. Snag some shooters to open up the floor a bit and maybe he works on his shot this summer.

He wasn't nearly as bad as the other 3.

We need to add some shooters for sure and Reeves is a nice start along with Frederick and I guess Wallace (no idea what he shoots as I have not seen him play)...I would like another.

Sure man.Wheeler will suddenly become a great 3 point shooter next season.Want to make a bet?
Nobody is insinuating he will become a great 3 point shooter next season. But it’s not unfathomable that he improves it enough to make the defense respect it.

You seem to want a PG that averages 10 assists per game and 1 turnover on 50% 3 point shooting. It’s unrealistic.

How about a point guard who is actually a threat so we will actually have some spacing?

For several weeks in the middle of the season, we were the best team in the country — because Cal backed off and let Wheeler run the show. That run and gun offense is what I want to see more of. But if Cal won’t let that happen, it won’t matter who our point guard is.
One of the few times we are on the same side of the fence, a nice change. Mostly like your posts even if I don't agree with them often.

1. Wheeler shot 44% FG and 30%3pt...10 pts a game 7 *** vs. 3 TO. Not terrible but not worthy of 35+ mpg.
2. Run him out there with Wallace as SG, Livingston at SF, Toppin at PF and Oscar at C....don't get frustrated when teams just sag back, pack in zone, go under every ball screen, Oscar gets doubled all the time, driving lanes are clogged up...resulting in charge calls all day long, etc...

Why some want to run this line up out there is mindboggling to me. It is beyond obvious Wheeler will be a bigger problem with less shooters on the floor with him.

UK will need Wallace or a huge transfer to shoulder the load if thats the lineup that Cal rolls out. Last season showed that you could let Oscar eat all he wanted and still beat UK. Due to injuries and the lack of a true "take over" style player - UK didn't have a non-Oscar answer toward the end of last year. Where UK can make up for some of their weaknesses from last year is on the defensive end - Toppin and Wallace are both upgrades over Washington and Brooks on the defensive end. You can dissect Reeves as much as you want but I would wager his impact will be similar to Mintz - so I would wager that Cal will go out and get a major transfer at guard and it may be someone who isn't even in the portal yet or someone testing the NBA that ends up back in college.

Bingo. Of course they are now going to seem optimistic about his return. They have to get access to the team, right?

Anyway, my opinion is that Wheeler hinders how good we could have really been last year, and will most likely do the same next year. I think that Wheeler has reached his ceiling, but has a high floor. In other words, he is an average/above average point guard that will never be exceptional, or carry a team if needed.

Overall, confidence wanes low for me having him back at the helm with the current trajectory of next year's roster. To get the most out of this team, a PG that can consistently score off the bounce and more of a reliable shooter, would give UK a better chance to get where everyone here wants to go.

We all know what he is, but can he lead a team to a Final Four? I'll let the "experts" answer that.

I have said this repeatedly. Watch the coaching and instructions. Cal slowed it down near the end as usual and that was costly. Our offense was get it to Oscar and no one else was doing much. So St. Peter's packed it in. Somehow the same people complaining about Wheeler forget if it wasn't for several of his back to back drives in the second half we wouldn't have even been in the game. But, that Cal stall ball has been awful so I guess it was Wheeler's bad play against Wisconsin and Kansas State that cost us those games too.
