At least we won't have to debate if he is returning next offseason!
And that is all you need to know to realize that they are fans of the coach, not the program. But a sociopath almost always has his/her cult of personality willing to take a bullet for him/her.Just checking in this morning , I've read page one , haven't got to page 2-3, ands it amazing the poorer the situation is , or the more damaging to our reputation , the more the defenders sprint to the defense . They move with the quickness of a cat to make any excuse they can to defend their king . Its nauseating .
Personally I would rather have Villanova's model. We can get just as much or more out of 3 and 4 year 4 stars supplemented by transfer portal as we are from the 5 stars. While this mindset is tough for fans to deal with you're kidding yourself if you don't think every top flight player shares the same sentiment.
That's fine but are you also fine with the 15 years it took him to win his first championship? A coach may be able to win that way, but he had to catch lightning in a bottle to do so and hit a miracle shot to win it. Aside from the 2 years they won and this year, they made it past the 2nd round once in the last 11 years.Personally I would rather have Villanova's model. “Aside from the 2 championships and the other final four, they’ve only done it twice!” Lol whatThat's fine but are you also fine with the 15 years it took him to win his first championship? Ask every single person on this board if they would have left college after a year if offered the money NBA lottery picks get and 100% of them would leave. Imagine a computer science major getting a job offer from Google after their freshman year that paid $3 million guaranteed for 3 years where Google would continue to teach them to code. That's what these players get, their career just happens to be playing basketball. They get paid and continue to improve their skillset while in the league.Does anyone truly think they really want to be in college? This level of athlete wants to be in the NBA.
What's confusing? Are you saying Cat's fans would be happy w/ season after season of 1st and 2nd round exits if they got 2 championships in 20+ years?“Aside from the 2 championships and the other final four, they’ve only done it twice!” Lol what
Our fanbase is incredibly impatient and would ***** and moan about how the four star players weren't playing lights out basketball halfway through their freshman year. Our fanbase wants elite 5 star talent but wants them to stay for multiple years. Fans will complain when elite talent leaves early and also complain when multi year players aren't elite talent. It's a no win situation.Personally I would rather have Villanova's model. We can get just as much or more out of 3 and 4 year 4 stars supplemented by transfer portal as we are from the 5 stars.
Imagine our fanbase if a coach started 52-46 with three straight NITs to start their career at UK? Jay Wright would have been run out of Lexington after year six at the latest based on this table. What's confusing? Are you saying Cat's fans would be happy w/ season after season of 1st and 2nd round exits if they got 2 championships in 20+ years?
You rarely if ever see the kids at Duke, UNC, etc., act like this, without a doubt, it’s the culture that Cal created, UK is just an inconvenient path to the NBA.
It really is absolutely mind-blowing the lengths some people will go to play defense on this stuff. Guy flat says before he plays a game here he wants to "GET OUT OF THERE AS SOON AS POSSIBLE" and y'all are like yeah that's fine, because Calipari. " Sheeeeesh
It’s not Cal. They want paying. It’s the caliber of recruits. How does no one see a problem with this?
Cal has gone from having to convince players to leave because they love it here (MKG, Cousins, etc.) to having them want to be gone before they even show up!
Why should they try hard in March when they’re just extending an experience they want over ASAP?
Okay well I didn’t. I went to get my degree, lol.I said the same thing when I went to college. In fact, after my Sophmore year, I told my roommate I was quitting because I knew all I needed to know. I went on to get 4 degrees. The kid is a kid. He is as dumb as I was at his age and probably as dumb as most of this board at that age.
Oh really?! Pitino did it in 5 years (post probation) and had probably the greatest team of all time in that 5th year. He was in the FF with a behemoth of a team in just year 2 (post probation). He only had 1 team that didn’t make the EE in 6 eligible years. So, I call BS.That's fine but are you also fine with the 15 years it took him to win his first championship? I agree, I miss the days after our players leave here instead of going pro they embezzle money from the state of Ky and go to prison.I don’t know the kid..and I know it’s unfair…but I already dont like him. Give me a team full of Deron Feldhaus John Pelfrey and Richie Farmer over this crap
Okay well I didn’t. I went to get my degree, lol.
Nonetheless it’s a really bizarre comment to make to the media as an incoming player. It’s more on the culture that’s been created here by Cal than it is the kid, though.
I was the 2nd person in my family ever to get a college degree.Gotcha! I am curious.....did you come from a family that valued higher education? Mine didn't. In fact, I was the only member of my family of origin to graduate from HS. I think family background has an effect on how many of us viewed college.
@Lempface I think this is an important point to make for those of you that say Wright would've been run out of Kentucky with his resume at Villanova if he had the same at Kentucky. Put simply, Jay Wright's resume at Villanova is substantially better than Cal's resume was prior to coming to Kentucky. Agreed?Sorry I just thought it was a funny comment. "Aside from his 3 really awesome years he hasn't been great" lol. Jay Wright is one of the best there is doing what he has done at Villanova, really all there is to it. Every coach that has coached at Kentucky has had better results here than they have anywhere else, right (aside from BCG). Safe to say Wright would as well. What was Cal's resume prior to coming to Kentucky? Better than Wright's now?
The entire landscape of basketball is DRASTICALLY different now than it was in 96.Oh really?! Pitino did it in 5 years (post probation) and had probably the greatest team of all time in that 5th year. He was in the FF with a behemoth of a team in just year 2 (post probation). His type of model would do great here. Like I said, it’s been done here before and done well. It wouldn’t take 15 years at UK, not even close. This isn’t Villanova.
I don't argue with that but the sentiment was Wrights system and recruiting strategy. The guy is entrenched and he's not leaving them for us so that doesn't matter. The comparison should be looking at his Hofstra record and comparing to guys with similar strategies and resumes and whether we'd be patient enough to let that kinda guy blossom into something Wright-esque. UK fans would not be that patient.@Lempface I think this is an important point to make for those of you that say Wright would've been run out of Kentucky with his resume at Villanova if he had the same at Kentucky. It seems like Kansas, Nova, UNC, and Duke are, indeed, having it both ways.Half or more of this board is already complaining how we've slipped in recruiting, you can't have it both ways.
Might be true but I'm pointing out the fallacy so many people on here make by looking at other coaches out there and comparing them to Cal's resume now. Cal's resume has bolstered since coming to Kentucky, Just like Pitino's and Tubby's did.I don't argue with that but the sentiment was Wrights system and recruiting strategy. Nobody wants to play in Cal’s system, whatever that is. We don’t really have an identity. Cal needs to restructure everything to a good system that values actual basketball skill instead of pro metrics. Eh, hell, never mind. That’s never gonna happen anyway. This is a Cal / Kentucky thing. If you listen to Duke players when they commit it's always "I knew I wanted to come to Duke" not "Let's get outta here ASAP"
Exactly. There is no reasoning going on with Cal to change. Not even a consideration.Nobody wants to play in Cal’s system, whatever that is. We don’t really have an identity. You have to have some kind of identity and a good system. We don’t have that with Cal. He just recruits by stars and NBA potential. There’s all kinds of programs doing this right now: Arizona, Gonzaga, duke, Baylor, Villanova, Kansas, etc.The entire landscape of basketball is DRASTICALLY different now than it was in 96.
It's a crapshoot with 3-4 star players who end up developing into fantastic college players or just stay pretty good.
Do I think Wright was a terrible coach for the 15 years and then all of the sudden became a good coach? No. He lucked into getting some mid tier guys that exceeded their ceilings.
Guys like Arcidiacono, Jenkins, and Divincenzo ended up much better than expected.
But just as easily you get guys that don't pan out.
To clarify, I think there are a number of coaches I think that would win and win big here immediately. I just don't think any would actually leave their situation. Few, Wright, Self, Donovan, Stephens come to mind.Might be true but I'm pointing out the fallacy so many people on here make by looking at other coaches out there and comparing them to Cal's resume now. Cal's resume has bolstered since coming to Kentucky, Just like Pitino's and Tubby's did.
I agree Pitino did GREAT here. But it was a different era. NBA didn't really take one and dones.Oh really?! Pitino did it in 5 years (post probation) and had probably the greatest team of all time in that 5th year. He was in the FF with a behemoth of a team in just year 2 (post probation).
