The NIL gives us a really good chance at this guy, if it is done right and goes into effect this season.

Where is he going to profit most from his NIL, a place like UK or a place like Miami?

Miami fans aren’t buying Duren jerseys like UK fans will. He will have to compete with Heat players, Dolphins players, Marlins players, plus Miami, UF, and F$U football players.

Meanwhile at Kentucky, BBN will buy anything with Kentucky on it, especially the Jersey of our star basketball players.

Slap his picture on a Maker’s Mark bottle and watch how fast they move.

If done right, UK players stand to make some real cash, especially the big name guys.

Imagine how much money Boogie and Wall could have made. And AD and MKG. KAT and the Twins.

Duren would be crazy not to cash in by going to a school like UK, and let’s face it, with BBN backing it financially, there’s really no other school like UK, when it comes to basketball.

He’s more physically mature than most college players already. Dude is a freak of nature
Could be. I was speaking in general. This whole reclassifying thing is a bit of a crap shoot. Mental and social development at that age is a consideration as well. Nothing against this specific player at all. But the concept of a man-child comes to play here.

I figure Duren was probably originally in the class of ‘22 when he started school, but was moved down for athletics. That or he was held out and started late. That happens a lot. I doubt he is a just turned 16 year old Junior like I was in HS. I would be surprised if he is not 18 already.

If he comes to UK then no doubt we are F-ing back!

However, this feels more like a let's just hope he goes to the G League or Miami so he doesn't affect our chances next year. If he ended up somewhere like Michigan or UCLA they would be overwhelming favorites to win it all as they already have really good teams. Hell, even AUB or Bama would be tough to beat if they landed him.

Thank God KU or Dook isn't in the running. It would be amazing to get this kid but right now it kind of feels like let's dodge a bullet so there isn't a super team in our way of a run net year.

Just looked it up, he will be 18 in November. That means he is eligible to be drafted next spring, if he reclassifies.

I will happily take that. He comes and we would have to be considered Top 3 if not #1. Hopefully, O and Chin is selling him on that very fact and the chance of bringing home #9 and that he will still get to the Pros the same time as he would have, but with a chip, he will never forget. I just think it is bad timing and don't want to see him land at another top team. Uk first of course then G League then Miami best-case scenarios.

So if he won't be 18 til Nov. Will he be eligible for the G league. I know he has to be 18 by Jan of the draft year to go to the NBA? Just wondering if he reclasses does he have to go to college? If that was the case then possibly going to college this season and being eligible for next draft makes alot of sense for him especially if NIl is active this season.

Obviously, you would take a guy like that if you can, but you also have to think about potential team chemistry. Would it cause problems with our other bigs who would be losing PT?

Play the best players. Trae Young got a raw deal because players did not want to play with him & Cal backed off his scholarship to him. If we can get Duren, get him to become a Cat.

You take Duren and let the chips fall where they may. If guys lose PT, so be it.

I would think Ware would be a good redshirt candidate. Hopkins could be one you convince to stick it out and be a key piece in 22-23. Allen and Fredrick are Kentucky kids, hopefully they are patient. Collins might be asked to take on a smaller role than expected.

You got to think Tshiebwe, Duren, and Brooks would get the lion’s share of minutes at the 4 and 5 with Collins as the fourth guy.

The backcourt would see a Wheeler, Washington, Grady, and Toppin rotation with Fredrick and Allen fighting for minutes.

Things would be really crowded, but Duren would be worth it.

Agree completely!

Me and both my kids were or will be 17 when classes started Fall of our FR year of college.
So I hate hearing an 18 yr old that was held back strictly so could have an advantage over younger kids in HS athletics is too young for college. BS!!!

24-16 platoon!!!
Duren / Collins
Oscar / Brooks
Toppin / Allen
Grady / Fredrick
Tyty / Wheeler

Bench: Ware, Hopkins

Mintz would bump Allen to the bench

Don’t use the P word, but a split like that might work.

But I wonder how a guy like Brooks would feel about only getting 15-16 minutes a game this season? He probably expects to play 25-30 minutes going into this season.

Would be a nice problem to have.

I’ll let Cal try to sort out the PT.

He has a lot of work to do before he can reclassify or it would have happened sooner.

But if he manages to move to '21, I think it's inevitable that we lose someone. It's already hard to find minutes for everyone at the 4/5. Adding a guy who will start and play 30+ minutes is just too crowded.

Might be too late in the process for anyone to find a new home by then though.

If he commits in July, I could see one of our forwards transferring shortly thereafter.

But like I said, adding Duren would be a nice problem to have to deal with.

Talent wise, Duren is definitely worth it. However, if he is not a team guy and team player, we've already seen that movie.
Not saying he is me first. Just saying that should and I'm sure is a part of the equasion.
Guy looks like a grown man at 17. Genetic lottery winner. Would make UK's frontline NBA level. Not sure how legit a contender UK is, but it sure changes a lot of things if UK were to get him (they don't ) imo.
But with the staff UK currently has, you never know.

Just like with any team, If Brooks or anyone on the 2nd unit wants more minutes then beat out the guy in front of you. For him that would be Duren, Oscar or Toppin.
But don’t slack off pouting, or Hopkins will gladly take your minutes.

Ehhh it’s more complicated than that man, it’s bad practice to bring someone in late and tell your junior that you convinced not to transfer that he will not be playing much this year.

Could create locker room issues, could become another weapon for Pearl to negative-recruit against us.

You take him if he wants to come, but you have to carve out minutes for the guy you just recruited over.

In the related article on KSR the kid does an impressive job of emphasizing his main goal is a 10 - 15 year development plan and not about money, especially early on. If those are his words he appears to be an intelligent and mature young fella.

I'm not saying we shouldn't, but it is denying reality to ignore how it would affect the team. If you suspect it would cause too much resentment, that may make the cost/benefit question much more murky.

I don’t know, seems to be a similar player to Oscar, who is actually bigger and more experienced and already practiced with the team the last 6 months. How good would Oscar look playing AAU ball against HS kids right now? I also think if we’re being serious about playing a more open, guard oriented offense like everyone wants adding another low post big makes no sense.
