In all fairness, Cal had guys leaving before this giant transfer portal option was available.
Cal has had one of the lowest transfer rates in the country since he's been at UK. You people will complain about literally everything.

9-16 I don’t know that you can ding that narrative with an injury riddled transfer
Lol, how did we manage such an odd total of games? Seems like something odd must have been going on that season that could have resulted in obscure results across the college landscape. Wonder what that could have been.....

Crazy. Maybe UCLA and he and JJ can light it up together.
Wouldn't that be a plot twist. I want first 6 years Cal back so bad. Title, title game appearance, 2 more final fours and an elite 8. Sign me up. We can deal with the NIT if it's right after a title then followed up with another title game appearance

don’t make excuses UK fans are better than that and are why our program is at the top. You yourself sound like cal. Let me ask you what did this virus have to do with our awful end down the stretch of the season? We didn’t improve as the season went along so I call bs on your moronic excuse that every program btw had to deal with.

Cool story. You should save that one and tell it at parties. It would definitely score some laughs.

Allowing players to have the freedom that coaches, administrators, and other students have is great. Just because it might interrupt your entertainment doesn't mean there's something wrong with it.
I see this argument all the time. Matt Jones is big on it. Yes, coaches can leave but there is usually a cost. A buyout.

A regular student can obviously transfer but not if he is getting a scholarship. that would be their cost.

Athletes can transfer but at the cost of sitting out a year. I don’t see the problem with that.

Who chooses to be young every year?
No one. It happens as a result of recruiting a higher volume of highly rated players that are coveted by the NBA because of measurables. Most people would rather get paid than play/work for free.

Fans ***** about the multi year guys, then they ***** about the OAD guys. I'm honestly not sure what players we could get that wouldn't be bitched about at this point.

So, cal has created this culture of leaving after a season or you’re a failure. Roy Williams and UNC have landed one 3 star since 2011. The rest have been 4 and 5 stars. Guess how many one and dones they’ve had since then?

Couple problems with that logic:
First, is that more players have returned under Cal than left after 1 year. So, by that logic, Cal has labeled them failures but yet they still return to play for him?
Secondly, is the fact he has been vocal about certain players like BJ needing more time and publicly advocating their return.

UNC basically just lost their entire roster and has been awful since 16/17. Do you really want to be like them? Most teams in the NCAA will have more experience than us this year or in years past. It's only going to work out in the end for one of them. We've had more sucess than all but 2 or 3 programs in Cal's tenure. And that’s if you're basing it purely on championships. If you consider F4's or more, we are more successful.

I'm not "you people". I was just saying that the portal transfers now are totally different than a kid leaving a program due to the program or coach itself. So they aren't at all analogous.

No, I am saying the players feel that way. They come in and see they aren’t ready and go anyway or transfer because the culture @ UK promotes bouncing after a season. The UNC example was to show that it’s possible to land big talent and retain it. UNC sells players on titles and final fours and then getting drafted. UK sells players on getting drafted and maybe winning a title. Duke is having the same issue as UK. OaD is cancer.

Cal’s double masking surely affected his terrible bench coaching and awful substitution patterns. It also caused him to play some lackluster players an obscene amount of minutes. Or maybe that was not his double masking at all, but rather his double standard.

Now you are assuming what the players feel. That is a bit odd.

Just because someone transfers doesn't mean they feel they are a failure. We honestly haven't even had that many transfers over 12 years. And all of them simply just desired an increased role, or in a couple cases it was personal reasons. They could have stayed and earned bigger roles like many did, but they took a quicker path. Almost every player he has had transfer out was expected to be a multi year player, so why they would feel like failure after 1 year and leave is a bit illogical.

UNC never really landed big talent after Barnes, until the PG they had last year. The rest of the highly rated players they got were back end of the top 25 or lower. They also were typically big guys that never had much NBA potential and took 2-3 years to develop. As a result, UNC had several mediocre years between 1 or 2 good ones.

UNC has won 3 titles using their model. I want to go back to the traditional way. I.E. a few 5 star freshmen with veterans mixed in. See gonzaga and michigan as examples of this. UKs best teams under cal have had this same model. 2015 had talented freshmen with veterans mixed in. As did 2012 and 2010. Do you really believe Juzang was transferring due to home sickness? Then he lists notre dame and villanova as potential landing spots.....cmon bro. A lot of guys like him transfer due to being recruited over. Quade Green was only brought in to help reel in Bamba, Askew is being recruited over right now.

Well to paint the full picture that is largely because we had 5-6 departures a year that were underclassmen leaving for overseas or the NBA at the tune of undrafted or a 2nd rounder.

One, lots of coaches don't have buyouts and if they do their new school foots the bill. Regardless, they have the freedom to argue that at the time of the contract. But if you want to argue buyouts, pay the players and include a buyout charge.

You don't see a problem with sitting out because you're more worried about your team, the college game in general, etc, anything but the kid.

Sitting out one year IS their buyout. I went in the military at 17 and it didnt take but a few hours to realize I was not military material but I had a 4 year commitment and I stuck it out.

I’m worried about my team? Hell yes I am. But this transfer bs actually HELPS my team. So, there’s that.

Yeah ... the "lowest transfer rate" is a weird flex. We absolutely have the highest roster turnover, whether it be to early departures and transfers combined. We certainly have had our share of transfers.

Yeah, I agree. Who didn’t see this coming? Of course Matt Jones thinks it’s great.

That’s because it drives the unknowing to his site and radio ( I think he has both). It sells ads. Makes him money. That’s the primary reason he thinks it’s great.
