Could-more like would beat us. Very disciplined on offense and defense, high basketball IQ’s, experienced, play with confidence, great offensive and defensive schemes..basically everything we are not.

Just curious since # of power 5 teams you beat is apparently a measure of tournament success

We never run a backdoor cut, like ever. It’s amazing how terrible Cal constructs our offense. One of the easiest buckets in the game is a rub off for a backdoor layup. Never run it.

U would think a coach who has a team who can’t take people off the dribble and gets overplayed on defense might try a back door cut from time to time

You might call it the fellowship of the miserable, if someone hadn't already claimed that....
What exactly did you think our fans would be talking about after a historically horrific season, directly followed up by four of our freshmen leaving the program? It's a pretty bad time to try to sermonize against the message board.

That's funny. I don't see anything about John Calipari. I just see someone posting yet again about how bad the team is. Something the fan of another team would gleefully post over and over and over again.

A kentucky fan wouldn't pretend we are good. But they'd also shut their fng mouth about it every now and then.
The fans are pissed. Community-based cartharsis is healthy when done in the proper forum, which is what a sports message board is. Some of you are still evidently illiterate when it comes to understanding how these message boards work.

Exactly what the wife and I have discussed. I just don’t understand it. Another thing is Cal waited til the 2nd half one game to finally set a high screen for Askew. This was after he was totally abused in the 1st half by defensive pressure.

The announcer said, “great move by Cal to set the high screen.” I was like where was that in the 1st half?! I believe it was Dykes. You can’t make this stuff up. Terrible in game coach.

I’m certainly not suggesting anyone should be happy. Far from it. This is Kentucky - we don’t go 9-16, and if we do the anger will be righteous. Still......folks are simply venting, and there’s no reasonableness to the comments. An alien reading this board would assume the AD for some reason hired a middle school girl’s coach. Instead of remotely acknowledging that Calipari is one of ten men in the history of the college game to be enshrined in the Hall of Fame before the age of 60, or that he has more NCAA tournament wins since he got here than any other coach (and it’s not close), a great coach who had an inexcusable, awful season......he’s a “clown”, and a “horrible coach”. There’s not much talk about the future or how we move to a different recruiting philosophy (necessary but very difficult IMO), nothing constructive at all. That same alien, after a few minutes here, might just pour gasoline on himself and light a match. And most of the specific coaching suggestions make little sense, or are so obvious, that they do sound straight out of girls middle school ball.

There's been plenty suggested regarding changing the recruiting paradigm. Some of you wanted no part of the solution though because it involved replacing certain staff members, hiring guys like Canen Cunningham or using Nike to land guys like RJ Barrett.

Maybe what you really meant was that there's been nothing "constructive" that you'd sign off on?

Nope. I know you’ve been a proponent of that. I’ve not really participated in those discussions - but whether I approve or not, that’s at least a discussion about solutions/ideas. Rather than just finding another reason to post a variation of “Cal sucks and the world has ended”.

Back door when you are overplayed, that is part of fundamentals, something you learn in, make that, you should learn in grade school. You don't need fundanentals, just out run and out jump everyone. That is what is taught in aau basketball. Aau teaches you look great and make us handlers a lot of money. All you have to do is out run and out jump everyone, and dunk on your man. Don't you dare play as a team, us handlers can't make a bunch of money if you play like that. That is culture of aau basketball, which is ruining the college game.

If the only teams OK state beat, were mid majors then end up losing to every power 5 team they face, it's telling.
Loyola is very very good, better than they should be. Beating them is a good accomplishment. They are better than Abilene Christian 2018, Wofford, Houston and probably Wichita State 2017.
I can guarantee you they're better than IU 2016 and Kansas State 2018.
But keep in mind, in order for Oklahoma State to get to and beat Loyola, they will have beaten Oregon State.
Say what you want, but losing to that IU team, that KSU team and that Auburn team, shouldn’t have happened.
Losing that wisconsin game when we had the lead, is also something that shouldn't have happened either. The fact that duke beat them twice that season, is telling.

All Cal had to do against Wisconsin was continue to run our offense. The ball didn’t necessarily have to go inside to Towns. I mean three straight possessions Cal didn’t even as much as give our guys a chance at an offensive rebound. It was atrocious.

Agreed. we should have seen his deficiencies when Cal lost the championship game to Kansas. He had that game won with 3 minutes left up 10 and his lack of coaching cost him and Memphis

Replying to this again after more thought.

If OK state were playing Wofford today, beat them, then beat Loyola, then lost to Houston, who was minus their best player. That wouldn't be terrible. Their coach is inexperienced, it's Oklahoma State and their coach makes pocket change compared to Cal.

However, if OK St comes back next year, beats popcorn state, then loses to Kansas state, minus their best player, it's a bit of a concern.

THENNNN, if Oklahoma State comes back the next year, beats Wichita State and Abilene Christian, then loses to a 4 seed, it becomes a fact that Oklahoma state struggles against power 5 teams.

But it would be okay, because they're coach makes pocket change, it's Ok state and he hasn't claimed that OK state is the gold standard.

Do you understand now, or do you need further explanation?

Nah I get what you're trying to say. My point is once you're in the tournament, success shouldn't depend on who you beat instead of how far you go. Also like if a team is playing against a 4 seed, a 4 seed is a 4 seed regardless of what conference they're from.

Take 2019 for example. If we had beaten Seton Hall and then Ohio State and lost to Auburn, rather than beating Wofford and Houston, that's just as disappointing either way. I didn't look at that as "we can only beat mid-majors", I just thought of that as us choking in the Elite 8. I wouldn't have felt any more or less pleased with the season if we had beaten 2 power 5 teams prior to losing to Auburn.

I think assessing it by "seed" makes more sense if anything. For example, playing a mid-major that's a 3 seed, would most likely be a tougher game than playing a power 5 team who's an 11 seed. Obviously in general power 5 teams are often better, but once you're in the tournament, the mid-major teams you do see (outside of the very low seeded teams that just get in by winning their conference tourney), are just as good as the power 5 teams assuming they're the same seed (i.e. if we're playing a 2 seed, they're 2 seed good, regardless of what conference that team is from).

Getting really tired of you Cal defenders. He's going to go out and grab a bunch more AAU guys who cannot play basketball and you're all going to tell us how much we have to appreciate them. Screw that.

I will take you on in Kentucky basketball history any day of the week.

Well then history buff. Which coaches in UK history have been statistically better than Cal? More final fours, titles, better winning percentage, better conference winning percentage, something quantifiable that covers his entire time here.

9-16. 8-16 if you do not count Miss St.

9 million dollars.

1 million per win.

Pitino went to a FF in half the years he was eligible. EE in 5/6. He lost the greatest game in college basketball history to a team that won two straight titles. Cal lost to Auburn, Kansas State as well as to Indiana. Yes the Pitino era was greater.

Hall went to the final four three times. Cal has him by one FF.

You look at it your way, I'll look at it my way. You can put that nice white dress on the stinky turd if you want, I call it like it is.

If duke, unc or ku had only beaten one Power 5 team since 2015, we would be laughing our asses off.

What is that stuff, They will never get to the NBA like that!! Don't they know they are supposed to dribble around the perimeter until someone drives towards the rim and turns it over under the goal because they are surrounded by the entire other team.

So what.

Man the way I look at it doesn’t change anything, you’re missing what I’m saying, I’m agreeing I’ve been disappointed with how we’ve fared in the tournament. The point is I’m disappointed because of WHEN we’ve lost (I.e. before the final four) not because of WHO we’ve lost to. The tournament is about how far you go. Not who you beat. Period. When we evaluate teams whether it be Kentucky or anyone we don’t look at things like “oh well that final four matters less cause they beat this many power 5 teams to get there” or “that elite 8 appearance was even better than the other one cause we beat so and so”. We just look at how far they went.

I’m just trying to say it’s a pointless stat, I’m not trying to comment on or defend our tournament runs. For example, in 2019, if we missed one shot at the end of the game we lose to Houston. If we make one shot at the end we win against Auburn. But alas, we beat Houston and lost to Auburn because of 1-2 shots here and there. That has nothing to do with what conference those teams were in, both of those games were equally close and we won one, and we lost one. Auburn being “power 5” wasn’t the reason we lost to them but beat Houston.

Main point is: why evaluate a team’s tournament success or lack thereof on who they’ve beaten, rather than how far they go?

Sidenote: the tournament is also just somewhat of a shitshow, which is clearly evident after the last few days. Not satisfied with no final fours since 2015 but still, it’s not like it’s just been a travesty. Couple plays here and there, ball bouncing a certain way, PJ Washington not shooting 8-20 from the FT line, we’re having a different convo. There’s no excuse for this year (although none of our rivals even making it to the sweet 16 makes it less ****** and I’m willing to give Cal a chance), but to act like we weren’t right there in 2017 and 2019 is just being narrow-minded.

Again man, this is mostly subjective. You’re clearly over Cal which is fine, I’m willing to give him a shot to turn it around. No right or wrong way, being a fan is subjective and we choose how we wanna be one.
