Tubby will get a standing ovation. Rupp Arena fans have a different mindset than Rafters posters. Guess it’s the anonymity.
Cal has had much better talent than Tubby and he has how many titles end of discussionWhat happened after that year when he recruited his own players?
Glad you love him. Great manI visited Tubby and Donna in High Point in January he told me next year will be his last coaching I am also on the jersey retirement committee Mitch and everyone agreed to retire a Jersey right after Tubby retires no sense in having High Point come in for a beating then honor him
Tubby and I have been close over 30 years no finer Christian man
I have been to every school he coached after UK on his nickel He was a credit to UK and people should leave Tubby alone
One title is better than your friend Billy GCal has had much better talent than Tubby and he has how many titles end of discussion
Wow....you gotta be kidding me.Tubby is a great floor coach. Better than Cal and Pitino. He is not a motivator like these guys and didn’t like to recruit.
Thats the poor mans comparison, you have to compare the whole body of work. Tubby took over the Alabama of basketball. Calipari took over a team from the basement.Cal has had much better talent than Tubby and he has how many titles end of discussion
Pitino is twice the coach Tubby was/is. Actually, 3-4 times.
Ricky can take a group of rednecks and make them the best team in America, but you're saying Pitino wouldn't have a better effect on a team full of McDonalds All Americans as Tubby did in 98? LOL....your fandom is blocking your intellect.
If Pitino and Tubby had the same exact team where each player was exactly the same.....same height, same weight, same ability, Pitino beats Tubs 10 out of 10 games with a few bad blow outs. UK made Tubby, if not for UK the country would never know who he was. Nice guy me all you want, we weren't fortunate and he'd be the only coach to leave UK worse than what he inherited in.
Or if Bogans doesn’t get injured, or Sparks had a foulscalled or, if, what,......And we wouldve had more if we hired Donovan.
If Tubby doesn't ride the coattails of Pitinos leftovers and win a title.....would he still go into the rafters?
If Mills or Padgett dont hit those crucial 3's against Duke, does his name still go into the rafters?
Then why didn't Pitino win in 1997 with 2 All-Americans?
Tubby is a great coach. He showed that in the Duke game and all throughout March actually.
Wow....you gotta be kidding me.
If all players were exactly equal, Pitino would run circles around Tubby's 10 games out of 10.
Pitino has a winning record vs Tubby and Pitino has had inferior talent.
You must really love Tubby to think this.
screw Pitino and the horse he rode in onDA missed the last half of the season. It’s universally believed (known) that UK wins the championship in 97 with a healthy DA. Actually, the runner-up finish was an amazing coaching job. To overcome losing arguably your best player midseason & still making it to OT of the championship game is pretty damn impressive, IMO.
Look at SEXtino’s OT. Record vs Tubby Rick makes bad in game decisions but Pitino about to get a show cause when NCAA rules on uavel bribery case and his career will be overWow....you gotta be kidding me.

Tubby won a championship at UK. And was a Bogans sprained ankle away from another one. I honestly think the year Patrick Sparks senior season we should/could have won as well. A few shaky calls in the Michigan State game (Sparks was fouled when he made the 3 to force overtime) and we are in the Final Four.
Did he make questionable decisions? Yes. But so did the other coaches who are in the rafters. Did he miss on recruits? Yes. But so did the other coaches who are in the rafters. Did he have bad teams some years? Yes. But so did the other coaches who are in the rafters.
Tubby did a whole lot for this program. And, he ran it with class. I think it is well past time to put his name in the rafters.
Finally, another voice of reason regarding the myth of Bogan's ankle keeping UK from winning. I debated at length with a poster on this a while back.People always want to bring up Bogans ankle. If you think Bogans was going to stop Wade that night youre dreaming. Wade could score on ANY NBA player.....Bogans had no chance with 3 good ankles.
Sparks team was good, but it wasn't a title contender.
People also seem to forget Tubby started looking for a job in while the season was still going on....skips town without even telling his players and leaves UK in shambles with nobody.
Who gives a chit about how classy he was? We sucked. Still think he's a good coach, how'd he do at all his other jobs post-UK?
BS The 98 team to a man agree they never win that year with SEXtino’s system that argument is crap
What happened after that year when he recruited his own players?
That is the most stupid statement I have ever read:chairshot:Tubby let the players run Pitino’s system! Have you ever seen a Tubby team press? This is Bs actually.
Tubby let the players run Pitino’s system in 98. They basically coached themselves. We didn’t play Tubby ball until 99.
Nice try though.
Probably nothing but a healthy Bogans certainly may have changed the outcome we can only guessI thnk the question, which can never really be settled, is how much did Bogan's ankle affect our defensive efficiency and team psychology going in to the game.
How much could our incredible defense that year, if all things were optimal and it showed up, have prevented them from going off?
Kentucky ran Pitino’s system in 98. The players coached themselves. Tubby was just asked not to F it up.
from 99 on Tubby ball ensued and we never ran more. 0 final fours with his own players, and that includes like 4 or 5 programs and a blue blood.
That is the most stupid statement I have ever read:chairshot:Tubby let the players run Pitino’s system! Have you ever seen a Tubby team press?
The Cats lost to Ole Miss in Rupp in Febuary in 98 and Tubby had a come to Jesus meeting telling them Pitino’s systems don’t work They played Ball Line defense the rest of the way and never lost
I know every player on that team to a man they will tell you Pitino’s system wouldn’t work they were too slow
You must live in a fantasy world
Sorry you have no answer for my factual rebuttal either you are a Uavel fan or a juvenile on Mommas laptop obviously you have been exposed as a person who knows nothing about basketballNo, I live in the real world. You are incorrect.
A Tubby press? You mean like his button downs?
Sorry you have no answer for my factual rebuttal either you are a Uavel fan or a juvenile on Mommas laptop obviously you have been exposed as a person who knows nothing about basketball
Now go away
Are you drinking? Pitino's coaching is on a completely different level than Tubby's. I hate UL more than the average, but if you think Tubby was better at anything vs Pitino youre nuts. Anything you want to look at, titles? Final Fours? Tourney wins? Head to head? Really no comparison.Look at SEXtino’s OT. Record vs Tubby Rick makes bad in game decisions but Pitino about to get a show cause when NCAA rules on uavel bribery case and his career will be over

Tubby is a great coach. He showed that in the Duke game and all throughout March actually.
Nobody was beating Bibby and Simon in March that year. And then that same team beat UK again soundly the following season...actually beat us bad with Tubby as coach.
Tubby is a great coach? Either your standards are Tennessee-type low or your love for a worthless coach is so great you lost perspective.
A great coach doesn't suck at Memphis, Minnesota, Texas Tech and now High point. And dont get me started how he inherited the premiere program when UK was at peak and turned us into a mid-major. Yeah, great coach.
Based on the box score and what I saw that night.....it wouldn't have mattered.I thnk the question, which can never really be settled, is how much did Bogan's ankle affect our defensive efficiency and team psychology going in to the game.
How much could our incredible defense that year, if all things were optimal and it showed up, have prevented them from going off?
Tubby had 3 seasons at Texas Tech and his best season was barely above .500.....that sucks in my book. I believe thats worse than Bobby Knights son.I wouldn't say that Tubby sucked at Texas Tech but at Memphis and Minnesota, yeah. At High Point, I guess time will tell but it aint looking too good at this point.

Gillispie?he'd be the only coach to leave UK worse than what he inherited in.
Screw Pitino and the horse he rode in onBut prior to Kentucky he won at Tulsa and UGA. He got both to the Sweet 16; Tulsa has only been once since and Georgia hasn't advanced that far since. How do you explain those away? He got older and lost his edge, as do a lot of coaches.
I watched the 1998 Title game over the past two days. UK was 10-2 in games they trailed at the half in 1998. Luck? Or do you think maybe coaching had a little to do with it? During the Tournament he kept making adjustment after adjustment to help UK win. It is his title ... Pitino didn't coach any part of that (and as I stated, lost the year prior with a more talented roster).
Tubby had other good years but the UAB loss, the Marquette loss, Michigan State, obviously sting. A lot like Cal's March losses. It's random. I think people in general put too much stock in how poor his last two years were and not his whole body of work.
Thanks for your open remarks Tubby and Donna have been good friends of ours over 30 yearsSmh...
First if you know anything about basketball and coaching, you can't just win a championship by rolling the ball out, so the ones who constantly say it was Pitino's players are crazy, let's see, Pitino didn't win the championship with those players the year prior...put that to rest
Second, for the ones who say he was fired, or abandoned us, please, he left because his wife had had enough of the racist crab she was hearing in the stands, he never wanted to leave
Third, Tubby is the best X and O coach Kentucky has ever had, add Pitino's defense and Cals recruiting, then you got one hell of a coach, all coaches do one thing great.
Fourth, Tubby recruiting suffered because he ran his program with class, not taking short cuts, not taking bribes, not taking boosters help, if you know what I mean.
Finally, I have got to know Tubby over the years, he has always said positive things about Kentucky, he misses UK, he will do anything for anybody. If you ever run across him, it won't be the typical blow off that some profile people give, he will engage you In a conversation, I live in Virginia, and when High Points in the area, we get together, the man has earned his place in the Rafters, why boo, that's classless, for a man who has always been classy....
No. Gillispie left us Patterson and almost left us Meeks. Tubby left us that big goofy white guy....forgot his name. And Crawford.Gillispie?
Im giving Sutton a pass.....im not sure who was sending the money to recruits to make the program fall apart. NCAA was getting ready to hammer us and nobody would come to UK. Not sure thats Suttons fault. And Sutton...
