I suspect SOMEONE will take that 3rd spot. We have so many option it's almost impossible that one of Askew, Mintz, Ware, Jackson, Fletcher, Brooks don't show out. Granted, we'd prefer it for a big to be the one to do so.. but the chances are likely that SOMEONE plays to their ranking or better.

But we had two studs in 2016 (Murray, Ulis) and two in 2018 (SGA, Knox), and both of those teams couldn't break the 27 win mark. The supporting casts on both of those squads were arguably better as well.

I mean, would you take Poythress, Briscoe, Matthews, Hawkins, Willis, Skal, Lee, Humphries, and Mulder or PJ, Gabriel, Diallo, Richards, Green, SKJ, and Baker (and Vanderbilt) over Haarms, Jackson, Ware, Askew, Mintz, Allen, Fletcher, and Brooks?

We've all been around long enough to understand what a solid team looks like, even in May when the roster foundations are being set. We also understand what a roster with a bunch of question marks looks like. Often, our expectations in both cases are met when the season finally unfolds.

The third stud doesn't always show up. Remember the Meeks/Patterson team, the Ulis/Murray team, the Crawford/Bradley team, the Noel/Goodwin team, the Knox/SGA team?

We knew going into each one of those seasons that something was missing - primarily, a third legitimate and consistent scoring option.

Richards is a beast who keeps getting better, people forget he was a project coming out of high school highly athletic and had insane measurables the sky is the limit for Nick Haarms on the other hand has already hit his ceiling
Agree Nick has a high ceiling but he will struggle big time in the beginning until he adjusts to the speed and physical nature of the NBA. He struggled at time in college because he tended to move slowly with the ball (not his feet but his reaction with the ball in his hands) both on offense and on rebounds and got it knocked out of his hands a lot as a result. He will have to learn to do things in double time, with quick decisive motion to have a shot at the next level.

That said I think he can do that, it will just take time

Nick definitely has a big learning curve ahead of him to go against NBA bigs at this point, especially when it comes to quickness, getting his shot off, natural post moves, and so forth. Hope he makes it, but wish he could have spent another year learning before jumping in with the wolves ... but I GET IT, I really do.

Well 6 down 1 to go..... EJ had 1 foot already out the door last year before changing his mind at the very last second. I don't see him coming back either I look for him to have his day tomorrow! Man I sure do miss the good ole days where the 2nd round draft picks would at least come back and play college ball.

And we were one of the 3 best teams in the nation in 2019

And that's because we had three studs going into the season (Johnson, Washington, and Travis), and one who developed into a stud that few of us saw coming (Herro). Is there a Herro-type among the present cast of incoming newcomers? Maybe. But is that fair to expect an SGA or Herro-level season from Askew or Jackson or Ware?

It's a number game. That 2019 team had four players it could count on each night. Next year's team appears to have two but will ultimately need a third guy.

You could be right about the supporting cast. But who saw Nick Richards being as good as he was this year? And EJ, kind of was doing the same thing Nick did at the end of HIS Sophomore year: glimpses. We'll never know how good some of these guys are until they play.

One thing that does worry me, 2016 had a pretty weak front court, but this coming year is looking worse. It will really be a shame if we got BJ and Clarke for nothing.. just to see us struggle to defend any competent big man.

Honestly, if EJ leaves and we miss on a big.. we almost need to pull in a student. Manhattan college did this to fill a hole, and I know it's not ideal.. but we just need SOMEONE that's 6'10 and 220lbs. IDC where you find it.

Nick is making the best decision for him. He had a great year at UK and I wish him the best.

It is a new day. Let's go after Haarms and embrace next year's team.

I love these recruiting guys.... it's expected to rain tomorrow. Could be windy and rainy unless the front changes direction and goes another route. If that happens, will likely not rain but be sunny instead.
And when you figure out thats exactly the same way recruits make their decisions you'll understand it all and feel a lot better

Not sure why people respond with this kind of hostility to posts like that.

That poster wasn't bashing us, just making a fair observation about where we stand. He's right, it appears next season hinges on Boston and Clarke being every bit as good as advertised. If either or both end up being disappointments, things could get ugly ..as we have no real backup plan without Nick or Quickley returning.

Only that he NEVER posts positive things about UK. 100% negative and is rampant posting after losses and no where to be found after wins.

He has been proven to be a Duke troll. Open your eyes.

Yup that’s exactly how it’s been . We are a long way from losing a lot from a ream because they were first round picks
Maybe these guys left because this Draft is a little weak? I have no idea. Nick has size and that may get him a look that others won't. Only Maxey should have truly left imo. Not sure what the answer is, but Cal will never stop or manipulate guys to stay.

So we have a few contrarians on the board. Who cares? Would you prefer that every opinion here mirror your own?

Ignore him, he has stalked me for a long time (it's really weird). I've had to report him and he has been suspended because of it.

You've been suspended as well, so not sure why you are acting like you're above anybody here?

Cal better go get Haarms...he's not a savior but you need someone to play the 5 next season
I hope we get him but it won’t matter either way in the big picture. Nick was our last shot at being a title contender next year. Our roster even with Harrms and EJ isn’t winning a title. Cal would have to get Kuminga or maybe Brown to give us a real chance.

Get Haarms and Greg Brown or Kuminga or all 3 and we will be set. We need front line depth.

I didn't realize it was this easy. All Cal has to do is get a guy who isn't a starter at Purdue and then one of two recruits who nobody thinks UK has any chance at and then we would be "set". Awesome.

Mr. Negative is at it again. It wouldn't matter if the whole team was returning you would find something to complain about.

We might get Haarms but that still isnt a guarantee and we all know how getting big men has been since getting Bam.... I just don't understand with all the minutes to get at the 4 and 5 why we can't get those studs anymore. I know everyone is going to say it's because of the money but I'm not buying that's the only reason.

Kuminga in the front court ? LOL, he would get washed like a dirty dish trying to play inside with the big boys. He will be better suited for the wing, he is not a banger.
the Ivanauskas kid from Colgate is about the only grad transfer left. 6-10 230 lbs. Shot 43% from 3. More of a stretch 4, but a big body who averaged 7.6 rebounds per game.

other than Haarms of course.

Kuminga is a pipe dream. Brown is a pipe dream.

If we are lucky, we get Haarms and the roster is pretty much set.

PG Askew/Mintz
SG Clarke/Allen
SF Boston/Fletcher
PF Brooks/Ware
C Haarms/Jackson

Might add another player later in the summer, but probably a reserve.

My only hope is that the transfer rule changes and some really good underclassman decides to transfer in to improve their draft stock. Highly unlikely, though.
