It’s still the same pretty much. I’m almost 60 and have lived here all my life except for college. Good people here, it’s changed somewhat but the principles of the people 60 years ago can still be found today. Hope it’s this way long after I’m gone, as I have a daughter that’s decided she wants to raise her family here.

He's not the only one that hated Galvan. He was my ex-wife's principal at Trimble Tech HS in Fort Worth and is now retired. I've mentioned this before but my ex ran into him one day and she happened to mention that she was married to a UK Alum. He laughed and said something to the effect that "I really used to get under their skin". What a classic jerk!

Was at the game in Dayton, when the Cats knocked off undefeated IU. My avatar is the SI cover after that win, with Mike Flynn high-lighted on the cover.

They need to crash it again. Ekeing their way in is not working.

Every game down there was a nightmare. Guys think officiating is bad now (which it is). But I believe it was worse back then. Not as much tv so absolutely no accountability at all. I always told my dad that UK could go down there with Larry Bird, Jordan and Walton and UT would have them in foul trouble in no time and beat UK in Stokely.

I always thought that if they did a movie about Mear's life, they would cast Danny DeVito as Ray.

Watched nearly all of that excited to see how we pulled off the comeback thought surely you didnt post a loss.. lol Still neat to see. Mid range jumpers were king back then. Crazy that they are now the worst shot in basketball.

They called it "The Deaf Dome". They even had a decibel meter in the ceiling. It would Redline every time we came in there.

Was at the UK/IN game in Dayton. The most physical game I personally ever saw was the Phi Slama Jama Houston team that played UK Super Bowl Sunday 1984. I honesty thought that part of Rupp might collapse.

I swear Barry Goheen played for Vanderbilt for 15 years. Always seemed to play great against us. Was happy to see him go.

Attended a few games when in Knoxville in late 60’s. Bill Justice and Boerwinkle were their go to boys. Justice was known for his fade-away jumper. 20 years later played against Wes Coffman, a guard on that team, in a tennis tournament. Wes has a dental practice in Kentucky. Lost in straight sets. :smiley:

According to Wikipedia, you are correct. He coached there 15 years and was also a head coach six years prior to coming to UT and never had a losing record. He left coaching due to health issues (depression) with his last season being the last year of Ernie Grunfeld and Bernard King, the infamous Ernie and Bernie show. UT had a losing record the first season without Mears as their coach.

He was a crazy dude, he would do anything to get their team up for us.

Jugglers, unicycles, trampolines ... It was the cirque du soleil. He was in lake Shore hospital for a bit because of depression. Sorry for the way his and Aberdeens lives ended.

Much like Coach K when he was out for his medical issues I think in the late 90s or early 2000s, that season did not go against Mears as he was not actively coaching the team.

Was at that game at Memorial when they came out on unicycles for pregame warmups. Students bombarded them with hundreds of oranges. Loved every second of uK bb growing up!!

Rodney Woods from Lone Jack was the guy and yes he has been a coach at Wayne Co for I think over 30 years.
