However, Cal would never look at a three star four year player.
Dominique Hawkins would beg to differ.
However, Cal would never look at a three star four year player.
It's actually the most intelligent comment in this thread. Thanks for your intelligent comments.
I was one of the ones. I watched him several times in high school. Everyone said he wouldn’t make it in college and wasn’t our caliber player. Even last year people were still downing him as a 1 truck pony. The kid is a gamer. And he’s improving steadily. Would love to have had him at UK. He can at least score it. Something we’ve struggled to do.I remember people on here talking about him. Most said he is just a 3 star, we don't want a 3 star here. The same ones that said that also said he is not quick enough, and he is only good because he doesn't play against any body. He looks pretty good to me.
I’d have taken him too even though he’s a senior. He’s skilled. McClung is a Soph averaging 16 while shooting 40% from 3 and a great athlete. You think he couldn’t contribute here?Or to mention that Georgetown's leading scorer is Omer Yurtseven, a 7 footer averaging 18/10 and 2 blocks.
I mean, if you're going to pine for Georgetown players, why not him?
I have some ideas about that, but Merry Christmas.
I totally agree and also, there are a lot of 4 and 5 star players who are WAY OVERRATED!!! just sayin'.I hate to tell you but college basketball is full of 3 star rated players that can play. Your way of thinking is why most other people think that Kentucky fans are stupid.
Maybe?I’d have taken him too even though he’s a senior. He’s skilled. McClung is a Soph averaging 16 while shooting 40% from 3 and a great athlete. You think he couldn’t contribute here?
The guy in the NBA averaging 14ppg was also an underrated player people said was a social media phenom who wouldn’t make it or play while he’s here. I’m not saying McClung is anywhere near Herro but it wouldn’t hurt to have a guy like him who can shoot it and plays hard on our squad. I agree with you. You can’t transfer stats but if a guy is super athletic, could shoot it in HS, is still shooting it well now then I’d say there’s a fair chance he could have helped us. That not just for McClung though. I’m sure there’s others out there in the same position. I only say McClung because I’ve actually watched him in person and several on the board were adamant that he would be trash in college.Maybe?
I know that one of the guys that UK took instead of him is currently averaging 14 ppg. In the NBA.
McClung is a solid player, but he's also an undersized 2 guard on what's probably a bubble team, with a very, very green light. You can't just transfer stats without context.
There’s this dude hunter mcclintock in the 2022 class, his mixtapes are unreal!! Hope Cal gives him a look.
Asking why we didnt go after a 3-star player, when 90% of them suck balls, isnt a good take.
Cal has received massive complaints that he hasn’t landed any top five players in 4 or 5 years and people are really going to lament because he didn’t recruit a 3 star!!!!!!!????
This is a whole new level of stupidity.
There are approximately 365 Div 1 schools with at least 10 players each. I’m sure out of the 3,500 players we could find a few diamonds among the pebbles but most a pebbles.
Interesting that you want to make it a racial issue. That isn't the real question though. The real question is:
Why didn't we get the cool white kid with the crazy vertical?
Seriously, that is the question..
I’m frankly not familiar with the kid but I was wondering the same thing myself as I read through this thread.Could never figure out how maclung wasn't rated much higher. 50 inch vertical with handle and range; and terrific scorer.

Maybe Cal should have looked at this kid. A three star guard from a small town in Southwest Virginia. He is a sophomore and has averaged 25 points per game in the last five games (all wins) and has been named Big East player two weeks in a row. He is the all time leading scorer in Virginia High School basketball. Sometimes the stars don't mean everything.
UVA is probably 4th in fan popularity in Gate City behind UT, UK, and Virginia Tech.I wonder how VA let him get away?
https://www.hoopsbeast.com/the-highest-vertical-jump-record/No one has a 50 inch vertical.
Can McClung hit his nose on the rim? No, he can't. So he doesn't have a 50 inch vertical.

Excellent leaper, for sure, but he's not Superman.
As for the rating, it was based on competition level in HS and the fact that when he played high level AAU ball (Adidas, on a team with Armando Bacot and David McCormack), he didn't really stand out. Good enough to draw the attention of high level D1, not enough of substance for the really big dogs to get involved.
He seems headed for a nice college career, for sure, probably All-Big East for at least a few years. But last year, he was a sub 40% overall, sub 30% from 3 shooter. Going to a slightly less pressure situation was probably the right move for him to maximize his college career. Got him early PT and more room to grow than if he was competing for time on a top 20 team.
My gripes w/ Cal are few and far between, but this might be the one that irks me the most. Passing on recruiting a lot of really good COLLEGE players! He won’t make it in the pros, so he’s irrelevant to Cal. Kentucky is about preparing players for their professional basketball careers, not winning games.
Sorry about that. You are correct. I remember. It was a sarcastic joke....think back to last year in the media
Both Virginia and Virginia Tech let him get away. His dad was a football player at Virginia Tech. Neither recruited him until after he committed to Georgetown and then Virginia Tech called him to try and get a visit.I wonder how VA let him get away?
I think the poster was being a little facetious. No one has a 50 inch vertical.

If Morant would have came here there would have been a bunch of people on here raising hell because he wasn't one of the top 3 point guards in the class. While we are on that....why didn't he get Ja Morant?

Problem is those 3 star kids want to play from day 1. They don’t want to wait around a year or two for their shot. It’s not as easy as offer and they will come. They’d rather go where they will get the immediate playing time. Times have changed, this isn’t the 80s and 90s anymore. The days of playing sparingly freshman and sophomore years and contributing junior and senior years are few and far between. These kids want to play, not ride the pine at a major program. That’s what people seem not to understand. You do realize it's not an either/or choice, right?
The issue is not whether we should offer a three star or a five star. Instead, it's whether we should occasionally offer a three star or NOBODY and simply leave extra scholarships unused, which is what Cal has been choosing to do in recent years (for example, we have three unused scholarships this year).
There have been many many cases of powerhouse programs that have benefited greatly from three star recruits that they took a chance on (some recent examples include Frank Mason becoming National Player of the Year at Kansas, Donte Divincenzo being Final Four MVP at Villanova, Luke Maye being integral to UNC's Championship run, etc.).
But UK is less likely to find those diamonds in the rough because, absent extremely rare exceptions (ie. Hawkins), Cal won't even try. He'd rather leave spots empty than do that.
I don’t understand why people ignore the facts and instead bash cal. I mean our decade was about as good as it gets. And why does anyone doubt cal this year? Guarantee by mid February and March were the most dangerous team in the countryAnd yet Kentucky won more games than any other D1 school from 2010-2019.
Incredible coincidence.
Jusang was rated much higher. I do understand that but rankings don't depict what the kids drive and enthusiasm is for the game. McClung has a bulldog mentality and has a in your face type attitude when he plays.Cal would rather get some 4 star kid from California, for whatever reason.
I have seen McClung play many times and I have never seen anyone his size come close to jumping as high as he does.I think I'm calling ******** on this until I see more reliable proof.
I've seen this many times before where it's reported that a player has an otherworldly vertical, yet that guy almost never is able to produce that number under controlled conditions at the NBA combine.
Similar thing with 40 times in football. Players have an odd knack for being slower at the NFL combine than they were reported to be before they got there.
