Zeta has made landfall in Louisiana with 110 mph winds, and looks like it'll go right over New Orleans. The Mississippi coast is getting a good wallop too. One of the Weather Channel guys is in Bay St. Louis now, and it looks like a decent storm surge there, and probably some high winds and maybe tornadoes.

Yep. Hope my friends on the coast are hunkered down. It is just the right size for people to underestimate it and get caught in a bad spot.

went to walmart today where there was plenty of bread and water. initial estimates were that it would drop below hurricane before landfall. now it looks like its going to strengthen to a significant storm

It was just below being classified as a major hurricane that starts at 115. As you said, stronger than expected, by quite a bit.
Well, 111 mph is actually the start point of Cat 3, but we get your point. It was a strong Cat 2 and Golden Meadow actually had the 105-110 sustained for several minutes.
As for the WC, they would be derelict if they ever down played any land-falling Hurricane. Let’s face it, the NHC underplayed this one saying it would max out at about 85 mph and probably deteriorate to a Trop Storm before landfall due to wind sheer and and cooler coastline water. But yesterday, on the vapor image, the WC showed the sheer moving quickly north as if the sheer was getting picked up by the incoming trough and retreating to the north opening up the warmer water.
It's pretty wild in Hancock Co right now. Power out in a lot of place. We have 20 acres, and I wouldn't be shocked to be cutting up a tree or two tomorrow with the wind we have. The eye wall is on us right now. We're getting that sideways rain.
Don't they report in 5 mph increments? I have no idea, but it seems that way.
You're right about the downgrading. Last night, TWC said that even though the temps near shore were lower (70s), it wouldn't be enough to bring the winds down. TWC got this one right, and the NHC did not.
Cantore says Biloxi has 90 mph winds now.

All our family is saying trees are coming down now and sheds getting blown away. Wind has to be super intense.
We got ceiling fans ripped off our porch, trees down across the main road, big limbs all over. Friends up and down the coast all have damage from windows getting blown out, a/c units from above ground houses getting blown off and storage buildings disappearing.
This was the craziest thing I’ve been through personally. It’s going to be a damn mess across the Coast for days to come for sure.
Lost power here in Northeast Atlanta metro about 45 minutes ago. Had to pick up my garbage can and retrieve the grill from the back yard. Can see arcs all over, hopefully we get power back soon, my area is all underground.
Power still out in Fort Morgan. Not much damage that I have seen. Significant beach erosion though.
Super-Talk had a guy on the phone from the coast around 7:00 AM. What he was describing was pretty damn rough. He said the area he was in had Katrina type wind damage and about an 8' storm surge. Said his roof was badly damaged. HWY 90 is closed for miles.
I'm about half a mile from the water. Trees down everywhere. Most roofs in the area have some damage. No roofs blown completely off or sheds flipped over. Wind was very intense. Water came up very fast, but went down quickly too. Did not get in houses in our immediate area. I'll try to post a video of how fast the water was rising.
Peeled a bunch of shingles off my roof in Gautier. Tree fell on my boss’s house in Ocean Springs and my uncle up near Lucedale had a tree come through his house and about 8 more come down in his yard.
I was surprised that we didn’t lose power. Blinked several times, but kept coming back. Internet is down and I think my kids would rather be without power.
Roofing companies are about to make some bank. I called a local company this morning and the girl gave me a number to text my info to so I could be added to the list. She said the phones were ringing off the hook and she didn’t have time to write it down...

I've heard there is a huge shortage of roofing shingles due to Covid issues, among other things, in the manufacturing plants.
I’ve been moving trees all day with the tractor and chainsaw. Got some minor house damage. Kid I teach had an oak split their house in two, going to try to cut it up and move their stuff on my trailer tomorrow.
This thing didn’t hit like a cat 1. Came to Gulfport today and there isn’t a piece of property for Hancock Co to Gulfport that doesn’t have trees or home damage. Thanks God this thing moved fast or it would be catastrophic. From what I’ve seen, it looks like there were a lot of twisters jumping around. Normal cat 1 storms don’t uproot 30’ tall live oaks.

The fast moving part was what amplified the windspeed. Surge (and rain obviously) is increased by the slow moving ones. This one reminds me of Opal that hit Navarre, except it was a Cat 4. It was 17ing **** up well past Auburn, just flying through.
Sorry to hear that. We are in the middle of the woods, so we get a little protection from the wind. I can only imagine what it was like in bsl
There's another disturbance in the eastern Caribbean that the NHC says has a 60% chance of development over the next 5 days. It will be Eta if it happens, assuming some other disturbance doesn't take the name first. We've never had an Eta before.
We had a little wind early this morning, around 2 a.m., in north Alabama but that was about it. The wind and rain stripped a lot of leaves off the trees. I think there was some damage in the Atlanta area since it was still a pretty strong tropical storm when it went through there.
Hate to hear that. You and Ruckus over in Hancock got hammered. I’ve got lots of family up in George County and it was wrecked too.
Had some surge in south Pascagoula.... power restored a few minutes ago.... cleanup continues tomorrow for me
In-laws place in Pass Christian had a good bit of damage to Boat and lots of debris. On the way down tonight to help clean up. Was originally heading down this week to fish the Marsh....That flew South and changed in a hurry....
Still running the generator after losing power at 7 last night. Thankfully no damage just a ton of trees and pine straw in the roads out here on back bay.
