Former Husker football player arrested in Stanton County for suspended licenses and probation warrant

LINCOLN, Neb. (KOLN) - A former Husker football player was arrested in Stanton County on Friday.
The Stanton County Sheriff’s Office contacted the driver of a vehicle, 23-year-old Zavier Betts of LaVista, on Highway 15 northeast of Pilger. Betts' vehicle had reportedly sustained a flat tire.
According to the Sheriff’s Office, Betts was found to have a suspended driver’s license and also was wanted on a probation warrant, with no bond, out of Woodbury County, Iowa.
Betts was placed under arrest and jailed pending an extradition hearing back to Iowa.

Glad to see he’s doing well
I don't know the kid personally, but I remember listening to media types say that Betts may have other interests and football may not be for him. I guess the translation for that is that he's a criminal?

I remember the two Omaha prospects with similar names. Notre Dame got Zavier Watts (two time All-American). We got Xavier Betts, who was said to have "other interests" outside of football. Nice work, Frost.

You have their names mixed up. Nebraska got Z and ND got X.

That is the same warrant he was picked up for last time.
But when some of us pointed out he was on a bad trend line, and these types of things were character red flags. Shouldve never let him back on the team, etc.....we were called racist and lectured on how it was just a minor drug charge, etc.

I don’t remember anyone saying Nebraska was racist. Quite making crap up.

Given the trajectory of the program in the past decade Notre Dame got the Zavier that they were supposed to get and NU got the Xavier that they were supposed to get. Watts basically said he couldn’t go to NU cause the just weren’t very good.

Even the most biased fans on here wouldn't argue that Watts had a much better career at ND and he's a better player coming out than if he had come to NU. Honestly, I think there's a small chance he wouldn't have even played at NU. Players just seem to disappear in Lincoln. Frost might have had him riding the bench behind a less talented older player or had him playing out of position. It sounds silly to say that but I don't think Frost's group even had him evaluated all that highly because they didn't go after him hard.

I'm sure that is true, but that's just an excuse. They didn't go after anybody very hard those days. Someone told me that in his entire time at NU, Frost got out to watch ONE prospect play in person.

That is so sad. Osborne seemed to support Frost too. I guess loyalty to an old player. I think we’ve been too hard on players that played for frost. It’ll be very interesting to see how the sequel at UCF goes.

Knowing Frost and company they likely totally gave up on him the second they heard he wasn’t all interested in NU. One big difference (among many) between Frost and Rhule. Rhule doesn’t give up on a guy he wants until the kid signs somewhere else. Frost and company were seemingly looking for any reason to do less.

It had nothing to do with how Frost recruited or didn’t give up on his recruiting. It was the W-L of the program. Rhule would have never got him to Lincoln in the same situation.

No, he is/was into video games and comics, movies, stuff like that, basically he was a "normal" high school kid that just happened to be really good at high school football.

Had it not been for covid, where we just decided to pretend that grades and test scores did not matter, he would not have made it to college.

His time is about the of the time when I was still coaching in the Omaha area and you are right. Watts was never going to NU and his Dad was not going to let him pass up an academic school.

I didn’t say that Rhule would’ve got him to Lincoln and I don’t think he would’ve. I said that Rhule wouldn’t have given up on recruiting the kid until he signed with ND or specifically told Rhule to stop contacting him. So yes it has a **** load to do with Frost’s lazy *** recruiting, even if effort wouldn’t have paid the off with Watts, it would’ve with other/some recruits. (if that effort actually existed, which we both know it did not)

Zavier was a nice kid, but prioritizing things is not a strength. Seems like he didn't take care of his case from Sioux City, so that woukd be one example.

This is spot on. Rhule doesn't give up on kids and Frost did. Dylan Raiola might be an example of that. There are others as well. Rhule establishes good relationships and doesn't burn bridges. This will have benefits in today's instant transfer world.

Some public school districts kept going business as usual. Went virtual but took attendance, had grades, and busted their asses with whatever resources they had to do what's right for kids. But yes, OPS and LPS administrations set a horrible example of what not to do.

Yeah, even the ones that "kept going" were a little phony with it all, which I totally understand.

I went from being on zoom for entire class periods to 20 minutes to 15 minutes to 5 minutes.

In the end a lot of kids got good grades. Which again, I get.

We currently have a 4* top 200 QB in state with an SEC offer who may not have received so much as a phone call from Rhule because he doesn’t come from the right family.

But, sure, this is a fun fantasy.

My point is that he didn't take care of the minor drug offense he had in Iowa. So the warrant is nothing new. I would assume that renewing your license they would check for outstanding warrants, so he didn't do that. Other than getting a flat tire on the side of the road, which I am not sure why a cop would even ask for a driver's license, nothing really new here, other than driving on the suspended license.

Well and he left the team a second time since our racist and judgemental a-holes said not to let him back..

Not playing football isn't illegal. Many of the comments on this thread were about the poor decisions he continues to make. As far as that article reads, the only illegal thing he did was drive on a suspended license. Again, why was the LEO asking for ID when pulling over to help a stranded motorist?

Rhule at the time said he wasn't sure what had transpired before he got to Lincoln and let Betts rejoin the team. Betts did the things to be eligible to play and was apparently on a good trajectory. His departure caught Rhule by surprise. “Caught me by surprise,” he said. “He’s done a lot to be in this point. I don’t know what’s going on in his life that led him to that [decision], but he’s gonna go do something else. He was doing great, no issues, no problems, nothing off the field. Just doesn’t wanna play football anymore.”
At the time, most folks seemed pleased that he was back, even if we were not sure at all of his long-term commitment to the sport.
