We don’t need a mid range game. What we absolutely do t need us a guy who is a turnover machine that is not providing anything defensively. We have everything on the line right now and better players ahead of him. This isn’t mid season where you allow guys to figure it out. You go with what is working as he did in the second half. The reason you stick with Mathis is because he is our best defender so that alone gets him more chances. He also is great at getting to the rim as long as he is doing that at the right times. Here are things that help you win in college basketball probably in this order;

-defense
-scoring in the paint
-three point shooting
-rebounding
- assists

Caleb can’t check any of those boxes right now and he is turning the ball over.

Serious question: did you just start watching Rutgers basketball games four games ago?

Haven’t missed a game. I understand that he had a few good games starting with Nebraska. Before that he was bad. But really that four or five game stretch was it. I am not saying I do t like his game or think he has no future. I am just saying right now he doesn’t need minutes and coach agrees which is why his minutes have been steadily declining. I would shocked if he played more than token minutes on Saturday. He is just a sophomore. Nothing wrong with that. He has all off season to improve.

Players arent locked in to 4 year contracts any more. Pike has tough decisions to make as we end the season. It is great to have depth, but it makes it difficult to keep everyone happy. It has to hurt a player a lot to lose minutes to a player you think you are superior to.

Caleb came alive when when Geo was out. That was huge. But he’s not been playing well outside of that stretch. He will get opportunities but you know early what you have with Caleb. If he’s not locked in you sit him. There are options and Pike is not afraid to use them. Good Caleb is a big plus. Bad Caleb is a huge negative.

I really believe its not that easy. Pike has had to work hard to get Mathis to play within himself and Pike has gained some more trust in Montez. Montez at times has been guilty of trying to do too much and being out of control. Tonight was an example of him just flowing with the game, maybe one bad shot which he actually made.

I think this game was a long time coming. Coach and Mathis have to be overjoyed at this moment

I think Pike coach one of his best games last night. He brought JY in earlier, he sat Geo and Harper when not producing which lite them up, to your point got Tez to play under control (JY too), did some nice moves to Miles early 2H (didn't see that coming) and effectively got production from Paul. I also believe it was HIM that got the refs to review that Hook n Hold call. Team ready to play early too.

I call it like I see it. EXCELLENT job coach!

Sure Caleb has been horrible lately but.....Geo was horrible for a stretch. Ron was horrible for a stretch. Myles was horrible for a stretch.

Cut his minutes until he shows he breaks out of the slump. Its bound to happen sooner than later. Dont give up on him just like we didnt give up on everyone else who went through a slump. People seem to be forgetting just how good Caleb was earlier in the season and it wasn't just 4 games.

I trust Pike that Caleb will get his turn if he works hard and plays his role. Thats what Montez did and I also would think practice time plays alot in the decision making. Coaches may know a guy is talented and can make plays but can he trust that he will do it with the concept of team....its not just about playing the best players. I think Pike has done a wonderful job this year sorting through the roster issues. Its why I dont think JY is a starter and its why Geo played 33 minutes last night. There are intangibles going beyond who makes a shot.

Caleb was great with his role last year and earlier this year. I thought the move to a starter was asking too much from him. He is not that kind of player. Geo is our guy, I still cannot believe we have posters here saying that other players (not you) should start over Geo. Caleb needs to work on his role on helping the team. I trust Pike is going to help him out and Caleb will contribute at some point in a big way to a victory before the season is over. Just not his turn right now. We have 3 guards playing well and a 4th Mulcahy brings a vision that the other 3 plus Caleb do not have.

None of our players have been good in every game.. they have all had slumps and lulls. All have done silly things.

But none of them just "don't belong"... and that's the fun part of this season and the most frustrating. They CAN all be good.

Caleb was beyond awful last night. Absolutely the correct call to not play him. He was just bad the last three games. I wouldn’t even play him on Saturday that is how bad he was last night.
Why be such a jerkoff. So many good things to talk about but you choose to trash a kid after an off night. He was playing great a while back and others were struggling. Are you an angry prick or do you just have a little one? Or both?

Let me first start off by saying I really like Caleb - some of you dismissing him just don't get it. He is a player who has lost his confidence on a deep team. It is a good problem to have for Rutgers, but a problem for somebody trying to play out of a slump.

As far as Mathis and Young - yes, they were great last night and the two players who most energize the crowd. But let us not forget out of all players on this team they both by far have the most WTF moments. I'm hoping Montez had a breakout game last night, but as far as Young - he's high risk/high reward. On a team that plays smart he is an energy ball that when unleashed can either propel you to victory or burn the whole thing down. Pike's job is to control that, so people saying Young and Montez are our saviors need to take a step back.

Bottom line Pike does not have an easy job - it's a deep team where players can come out of nowhere to get red hot or ice cold. But man this has been a fun season!!!! In Pike We Trust!!!!

Ok ahole it was in the flow of the conversation as Green was questioning why Caleb sat the entire second half and his minutes have been lowered. I gave my opinion as to why. I said I liked Caleb as a player as well but right now is not his time.

I think that Pike missed an opportunity to get Caleb back in the game in the second half, especially when we went up by 20, in an effort to get his confidence back.

Did anyone see how he responded after the game? While the rest of his teammates were at center court celebrating with the students, after just a few moments, Caleb with his head down slowly walked to the locker room by himself.

We need everyone at some point, and it is just as important for Pike to keep last night's stars down to earth as well as uplifting Caleb.

Solid point. He probably could have gotten Caleb some minutes towards the end but coaches never think a game is over. Pike was into it big time screaming like the game was on the line with a minute left

Okay, iirc, Caleb had a great game when Purdue visited.. he won that game for us... and he will win the Saturday game for us as well.

Start him.. the Purdue players will remember him.

Pike stuck with this lineup when we were losing and starting slow. I don't see him changing it after last game

Brad , you have your opinion but I totally disagree. We need all our guys including Caleb , if we are to continue making this magical run this year. You see turnovers and I see all the things you mentioned winning teams do .
Only guy not to turnover ball this year is Pete Kiss

Greene is kind of an internet tough guy too. I guess when there’s two of you it’s okay. Let’s just call it a circle jerk in that case.

Without Caleb we probably have a couple of more losses this year. It was probably you guys or a separate circle jerk that was trashing JY and Tez back then: without those two we don’t win Tuesday.

Agreed, reduced minutes until he plays better, but not zero, as we play hard aggressive defense with 9 guys and having fresh rotations is key to that.

Did young do enough to earn his first start. He has in my book.

I hope Pike, now that we are headed towards the postseason, instead of prioritizing depth begin to concentrate his rotation to keeping two of Geo, Young, Mathis on the floor at all times.

I'd like to try McConnell in the starting up and bring Mathis in with Young off the bench.
