There are many on here who have noticed it seems to be more from those who went there (or the ones who live here and are just fans) from NJ than those who matriculated (or just residents) from the Commonwealth.

That makes sense. I mean, I want to beat you all as bad as any other team but I don't have a pure hatred for your program. I reserve that for PITT (Commonwealth native here).

The Penn State fans that hate Rutgers the most are all from NJ, basically Jersey idiots who couldn't get into Rutgers. Now they want revenge or something.

The PA PSU fans appear to care more about OSU, PITT, etc. than Rutgers.

Is this true? I thought the two schools were pretty similar academically.

I'm biased about that type of banter. I couldn't have sniffed main campus of PITT or Penn State coming out of high school and was going to go to a small school anyhow. Ended up at a branch campus with an average SAT score of 880.

Not sure about the former but there is something to be said about the latter....

Guy sitting behind me at the game this year, not a college guy (at least that's how he presented himself) but could tell he was from NJ from the varsity jackets his son and daughter were wearing. Wasn't so much he was cheering for Penn State (which he was) but more he was cheering AGAINST Rutgers.

He's done coaching IMO. He has a nice cushy job...that follows up another from Akron...and he's getting a little long in the tooth. He's a legend in Youngstown and I have to think he is pretty content.

I didn't know anything about Rutgers when I went to college other than a kid from my rural PA HS had gone D1 there (extremely rare) and PSU played them in football. That being said, I have always been under the impression that PSU and RU are similar in academic standards.

They are about the same (main campus)... but there are 40 plus Penn State schools/campuses, and just 3 Rutgers schools.

So by sheer numbers it is easier to get into some Penn State school. I know a lot of students who couldn't get into Rutgers-New Brunswick (Big Ten school) and couldn't get into Penn State (Big Ten campus) but got offers from three different Penn State schools.

It is quite common.

I actually think Rutgers is a great name and I love the color scheme and the Block R. That being said, I didn't know it was the state university of NJ until my mid teens or so. Keep in mind I'm 46 and grew up rural.
