This start is not optimal.

But Cal won't be fired if he goes 1-whatever.

But for now, this team is at best a 10 seed and at worst will have a losing record. We can brush off a 10 seed as a down year. Having a losing record at Kentucky with a preseason top 10 team should have the coach in jeopardy of losing his job. But it won't.

Even Better!!!!! Serious question here how does Mitch give Cal a 60 M buyout when the next largest is 21M for Rick Barnes. ITS TRIPLE THE ****ING BUYOUT. Doesn't really surprise me considering Stoops buyout was insanely high when we were winning like 3-4 games a year.

Mitch should go as well with all these ridiculous, chickenshit buyout clauses. 60M is INSANE. As was the lifetime contract. And, both were totally unnecessary. Stoops gets a one year extension every time he wins SEVEN games. Which in today’s landscape is an average season. Nobody rewards mediocrity like Mitch. And, he’s botched at least half of the hires he’s made. I’ve had all I can take of him.

This team right now is NOT a 10 seed. We have one damned win....against Morehead St. Plus, home losses to Notre Dame and Richmond with neutral court loss to Ga. Tech. You don't get invited, even as a 10 seed with a resume like that. This team is looking at 8-10 SEC losses. That means 14-16 total losses. With the supposed #1 recruiting class.
Cal has officially jumped the shark.

I'm making one post on this issue. Cal will not bend his methods, this has been shown over and over. They better make a move by the end of the year. If he sees the writing on the wall he will do whatever he can to destroy the program on the way out. Believe it, don't believe it. Doesn't matter, he will. Cal is bad business, get someone else to manage this program.
Who then?

He's not gonna get fired. Deal with it.
Nope, he won't be fired, even if this year is a 15-loss debacle. Almost no school will fire a hall of fame coach after one horrible season. He was 25-6 at the end of last year, and has really only had one "horrible" year with that NIT squad.

He needs to change, but we all know he won't. If (when) Cal leaves, it will be more likely due to fans not joining him in his NBA draft success hype. Not because of heat because of a couple "horrible" years. As long as he gets UK to the E8 or above once in a while, it will be literally impossible for any AD to fire him. We might not like that kind of performance and demand FFs and NCAA titles, but as long as he wins 30+ games a year most of the time, and gets to S16 or E8, he's going nowhere until he decides to leave.

Serious question, how did he leave UMass & Memphis.
I can vouch that Memphis fans hate him to this day.

Umass fans don't care anymore, but they hated him when he left.

The NBA doesn't want him.

UK is next on the chopping block. Cal is a megalomaniac, he is going to crush this program on the way out.
Alright but in what shape did he leave them?

MB has put the Kentucky Basketball program into a very tough spot. Almost a catch-22. The ridiculously high buyout assures that UK/MB can't touch Calipari. But, how much damage to the image or brand can the program sustain? And why should Cal care about wins-losses as long as he is untouchable?
What an incredibly miserable situation.

I've defended Cal in the past but can't at this point. No chance he's fired though, even if we finish the year 1-24. Too big of a buyout, plus with COVID they'll say this season is a wash. If we see this **** again next year he'll be facing some heat

Calipari is all about "kids". He's a great man, he washed feet. He will never hold an academic institution to that kind of money, he's too great of a guy for that and UK has helped his family too much.

I'm just glad Cal is a stand up Catholic who is in this for little people's futures.

We don't have to worry there.

Not optimal you say?! These Cats would be better off pulling a Coach K and calling it a season for the China Virus.

Well said. I'll be absolutely shocked if we make a Sweet 16 or even the tournament at this point this year, but he'd have to string together multiple bad years in a row to be fired. But say this year doesn't get better, and we have another so-so year next year, he'll be facing a loooooooot of heat.

Sad thing is I think he'd be able to succeed here in the future if he just tweaked his approach in a couple ways and either starts to keep players here longer or recruit players who we know will stay more than a year. I'd love to see a team with upperclassmen Askew, Ware, Toppin, Fletcher, Allen with a few stud freshmen sprinkled in, but that seems like a pipe dream. It's getting impossible to defend the OAD system.

It's gonna be INCREDIBLY frustrating if we're sitting here next summer talking about how we only have 1-2 players coming back from a team that stunk. Last year's team was a lot of fun just because we got to see players like Quickley and Richards reach their potential after both had struggled in prior years, rather than leaving the program before we ever see them play well. Almost certain we never see Boston and Clarke play to their full potential in a UK uniform because they'll be gone before it would ever happen.

If we have a losing record this year it's on the table. No coach should ever have a losing record at Kentucky.
It took news of BCG abusing players and being a drunk before UK (Mitch) canned him. His firing was never publicly attributed to crappy coaching. Mitch seems to be the problem here. Even with the noise from fans on how awful BCG was as a coach, Mitch likely wouldn't have fired him if it weren't for the locker room back story.

Under Mitch, Cal could lose 15 games three seasons in a row and still not come close to be canned.

Agree. Mitch is the main problem after Cal and his awful system he is currently using.

He really lucked out with the tourney being canceled last year. That team was not going past the S16. Our PG was a headcase and not enough frontcourt depth. We literally got beat on our home court against a mediocre UT team the second to last game of the year.

Yes, but the optimist in me (what's left of it regarding Cal+UK) could say that had he made a FF or even more, this start might not be as painful. Kinda like the NIT after 2012 Championship. It sucked, but we at least got one just before.
