Yeah- it’s pretty sad and certainly points to some failure in recruiting, but is even more an indictment on our lack of development in my opinion.

I've been saying this to all the "we have talent!" posters who insist, well, that we have talent

that may be, but the talent is all either 18-19 years old or not recognized by people paid to recognize it.

definitely a failure in recruiting. draft picks lag 4 years from signing on average.

anyone on our D who will be drafted this year (JoJo, CTB?, Daniels?) will have done so via development alone

IMO it's way more heavily weighted towards the development side. I'd like to see an analysis that compares recruit rankings with NFL placement. I'd be willing to bet that Nebraska would rank at the bottom.

I'm of the opinion that there's a few special players that will be special no matter what. But the vast majority of high school recruits whether they're a 3 star or 4 star will need good development and coaching to improve every year to the point where they could become draftable prospects. If that development stops for a period of 4 years like it has for a number of players who have been through our system recently, of course they're not going to gain the skills needed to be drafted compared to a similar recruit who did develop and improve all 4 years of his college career.

It’s certainly both, but I think all the “mid/low level schools” pumping more guys into the league aren’t doing so just because they recruited more talent.

Even 2 star players can be developed into NFL stars. It's usually a combination of under valuing the recruit and development of that recruit who came in raw with a high ceiling. Iowa has been very good at that over the years. George Kittle came in as a 2 star ranked as 235th best wide receiver. He'll be in the hall of fame as a tight end if he stays healthy for a few more years.. There are a bunch of players like him in the NFL right now and even more that preceeded him.

kittle has been named to a single all-pro team and has 14 career touchdowns

he's fine, but has quite a ways to go before he's wearing a gold jacket, iowa fan

Many players -- many highly rated players (uncluding would-be upperclassment this year, a few of which were team leading veterans) - exited the program.

I think that "development" is probably weighted too heavily towards the coach being responsible and not heavily enough weighted towards the kid's want to. IMO, some of NU's problems with "development" were the direct result of recruiting fairly highly ranked kids without as much "want to" as they needed to succeed. Good heavens Riley made the weight room optional but we still has some kids putting in the work. Peer pressure and expectations can be huge and we just haven't had the right team leaders in many cases at NU for the past 6 years.

right. I think (hard to read your unintelligible typing).

those first 2 "highly rated" classes were, in fact, not so.

this is a big reason why everyone who points to this years' class as cause for concern due to where it's ranked is a dullard, since it'll end up right around our average but should be retained (and hopefully therefore developed) at a much higher rate.

TWO of those team leading veterans voted to quit playing football last year. ONE of them quit before the season was even over. IMO, this team is in a lot better place leadership wise now than it has been since Riley was hired but IMO our QB doesn't have that "thing" you need to win games. JMO. Love Adrian. Love his talent. Don't like some of his decision making and how complacent he seems.

2 time all pro in 2018 and 2019, his second and third years in the league. Highest rated tight end in the league by PFF 2018-2020. Would have made Pro Bowl in 2020 had he not been injured and played only 8 games. He's only in his 4th year so yeah, he's got a ways to go.

Man when is see some of the young guys on defense in particular on this team, I see some kids with the fire in their belly we need to be successful. I'm not sure if we have that yet on offense yet. I think our center has it and maybe a couple of our other young O linemen. TEs have it.
