They are so arrogant and so confident this can be turned into a bad policy choice of Trump's creation, I honestly don't think Dave they are worried about it backfiring on them. You don't read any support from his "record" 80 million voters because:

A) roughly half of them never existed

B) the ones who actually voted were clueless why they voted for him

C) anyone foolish enough to think any of this is worth defending is too embarrased to actually prove how foolish they are defending it.

The only consolation for us who both oppose this and voted against it is this too shall pass.
