WVU Ranking Devastating

As a Pitt guy I must admit these rankings are misleading. The state of West Virginia is poor and have some of the worst public schools in the nation. Of course the state university will have admissions that reflect this. I find it admirable that WVU takes so many in state students despite lower test scores, grades, etc... I know both Pitt and PSU are ranked much higher than WVU and that ranking is earned..
But here is the issue, Both Pitt and PSU routinely deny in state students for higher tuition rates of international and out of state students.. This raises the reputation of each university which I suppose is great. I have a real problem though with that taking place as semi-state universities in Pa.
I think the way WVU does it is the right way and lets face it a terrific college education can be had at any university.

That's pretty disappointing to read. Bottom line is that WVU's nonexistent admissions policy and lack of a feeder school system causes this, and until that changes our ranking will stay low. Everything else is just lip service. Basically they admit any in state student who applies, no matter how unprepared, and predictably many of those wash out when they can't cut it, and shoudn't have been there in the first place. So WVU's rankings get hammered on two fronts - a low admissions selectivity score and a high dropout rate.

The obvious solution is to use a feeder school concept. You put your marginal students there for the first year, where they can concentrate on studies in a smaller, less distracting environment, and if they do well they transfer to Morgantown to complete their education. And if they can't cut it they wash out of the feeder school rather than Morgantown. Thjis helps WVU both on the admissions selectivity side and also on the retention side.

Most state systems do something like that. You think any bonehead NC kid gets to go to UNC-Chapel Hill just because he wants to? No way. The marginal students start off at UNC-Asheville or UNC-Wilmington, etc, and if they can cut it, they can transfer in to Chapel Hill.

So now some of you can jump and say how that's undemocratic, unfair, not WVU's mission, favors Charleston kids, favors rich kids, is politically unfeasible, etc., and that all WV kids have some kind of inherent right to attend WVU in Morgantown no matter how incredibly unprepared they are. I understand the argument. You just have to know that WVU's ranking will not markedly improve until we employ a feeder school approach.

The feeder system is probably the true cure but I doubt it would ever happen.

Take a look at all the previous, current and future development taking place around Morgantown and WVU's campus. That's all dependent on large incoming freshmen classes. Dorms, campus apartments, retail/mixed use project - all need a healthy supply of bodies and customers each year.

Now spend some time going into the details as to the criteria used to arrive at their rankings. Really look into these facts before accepting this washed up magazine's opinion. We are talking 'academics'--the ability to train/teach people that which is necessary to become productive.successful citizens. How did they gauge the effectiveness of all these Colleges? I imagine they spent a lot of capitol on counting books in the library, endowment from the wealthy benefactors, and (maybe) how many foreign languages one may choose from. I am never impressed with such nonsensical rankings from a two bit publication that I (nor most folks I know) ever waste money purchasing. I DO have proof that the undergraduate education my son received was superb and well respected at those graduate schools to which he applied directly after getting his Bachelor's Degree. Among the school administrators and department heads with much good to say about his getting the degree from WVU were UVa, UNC, NCSU, Alabama and several others. WVU is not second or third or fourth rate as this publication is desirous of promoting (and you are wiling to propagate negatively!). My son graduated Phi Beta Kappa from WVU, maintained a 4.0 getting a Master's at UVA and an MBA at NC State. So please stow the negativism and gloating I detect in the note from you) and allow the successes of the alumni speak for the education quality available from WVU to those desiring to study and learn rather than party and brag about their immaturity.

Everyone knows these rankings are terribly flawed, but that doesn't matter. It's the system they use and everyone needs to live with it until something better comes along that's more favorable to us (and less favorable to someone else).

These rankings have no meaning in the real world. It's an academic measurement that becomes less and less important as a person gets further from higher education or the business of higher education.

If these rankings harm the reputation of WVU, and to a certain extent they do - WVU should take steps to combat the problem. Unfortunately, we are going backwards. A few years ago WVU was tied with Louisville @ #171.

That was meant to be in relation to WVU in trouble if Big12 implodes. Sorry if that was confusing. Overall point was WVU Admin better position the academic side better or it may hamper an excellent athletic department in the future. Rankings probably do matter.

US News & World report's best college ranking came out. WVU was ranked #183. That is dead last for all P5 colleges. There is no hiding from that kind of ranking. Administration has let the University down. Pathetic!!! Anyone that doesn't understand why WVU did not get into the ACC or Big Ten is in denial. WVU has some work to do academically that's for sure. Better hope and pray expansion is done. One again the Big12 is a National embarrassment. Those rankings are devastating!
Guess sPitt is going to suck again this year

I take back my post. We could never ever ever be friends. Dude I've taken major abuse from you and your retard homers. I don't like you anymore.
We should have more sympathy for homer still 5. He likes to tell us how he has this big shot job and how he shoots bull deers in Colorado. If we had his life we would resort to these lies as well. Still 5 has to get up every morning go to work and here people tell him they want a Big Mac, large Fries and a Coke all day long.

LOL A male elk is a bull while a male deer is a buck. Even a moron would know that. I have never worked in the fast food industry so I will have to take your word on that. I don't need to lie to you or anybody on this forum. Actually, I have shot 3 elk in Colorado, two bulls and a cow. I have shot numerous antelope and one mule deer in Wyoming. I take it from the ignorance displayed in your post that you don't hunt.

Agree basically but my overall point was pointed more toward the Big12 underachieving.

WVU's demographics of fans will have more of a bearing on our next conference selection than wvu's academics.

I got my degree from WV and never looked back. I was unemployed for over 25 years and then hit on the pickle farm idea. The idea came to me in a dream. The next day I hared TorontoEERs. The rest is history. I give WV all the credit.

I really can't stop laughing at anyone naive and quite frankly stupid enough to reference the USNWR rankings. It's genuinely hilarious to know there are still people out there who take those seriously knowing what they're based on and how utterly subjective and meaningless they are. What are you going to reference next? Maybe "Uncle Jimmy's Best Damn Places for Cipherin and Such!"

I believe you may have become the top "desperately needs to get a life" poster of all time. You gotta stop embarrassing yourself my man...:flushed:

Greg, I have to give you credit. No matter how bad you look, utterly ridiculous and desperate you sound, you keep coming back to be destroyed by all. Thanks again for sacrificing your dignity to entertain us with your foolishness.

I believe we should be proud that WVU has an admissions policy that gives kids a chance. Yes, any WV high school graduate can be admitted. But it takes hard work to stay in school. Indeed, it hurts WVU's overall ranking, but I think the purpose of a state school should be opportunity.

You're not smart and you're not cool and you're not liked! You're a geek! I understand that you use this place to find friends and conversation. I'm successful and living the dream. You post like a guy that has no friends. So you are what you are and I feel bad that you're obsessed with me and my posting but know this. I'll pray for you at church tomorrow.
