WVU has beaten #2 Kansas, #3 Baylor and #9 Virginia. That’s three of the top 10 teams as notches in WVU’s gun.
WVU jumps to 7th in the Associated Press (writers) poll. Gonzaga #1, Baylor #2, Kansas #3, WVU #7. Big 12 has 3 in top 7. That translates into a #2 seed for WVU if March Madness is seeding were done today.

Difference between writers and coaches polls shows that no one can figure out where to put WVU. Beat 3 of top 10 teams. Lost 3 games to bottom-feeders or below-.500 teams. #1 Jekyll/Hyde team in the country. It wouldn't surprise me if WVU won it all in March Madness or went out early. Most unpredictable team in America. Which might be why WVU is 17-4. No one can figure out what they're going to do.
My diagnosis is we rely a ton on emotion/intensity/conditioning to get by our opponents. If our intensity is matched even by lesser opponents we will struggle.
#12 in the coaches poll is about where I thought we would be after last week. But #7 was a big surprise and much higher than I expected. In any case, I like it. Hopefully, we will start playing with the consistency that keeps us in the top 10 and in the hunt for the B12 championship.

As everyone knows by now, I'm happy if WVU has #4 seed or higher because the odds of making the Final Four soar if you do that. Main reason: You don't play any team higher than #5 till the regional semifinals.
But first, my alma mater needs to subdue Iowa State in Ames at 9 tonight on ESPN2, which is not a cakewalk. Ames is about as tough as Morgantown to come away with a road win.

The record shows that it is a MAJOR difference in your chances if you are a #4 seed or higher. #6 seeds made Final Four 3 times. #4 seed made it 13 times. So you have 4 times better shot at Final Four if you are a #4 seed. Top 4 seeds have more than 80% of the Final Four appearances.
Mr Obvious of course I was talking about the 3 seed(which is a top 4 seed right?). But the 5 seed sucks and a 4 plays the #1 seed a round earlier. If WVU doesn't get a 2 or 3 seed give me the #6.
I'll be civil because my parents taught me better manners. But the statistics prove me right. There are anomalies, obviously, because the Final Four never has four #1 seeds. But the odds are WAY in your favor if you are a top 4 seed, much better than a #6 seed.
#3 and #4 both have about an equal chance at making the Final Four. And playing #1 or #2 doesn't make much difference.
