Yes, I disagree. I believe that is shortsighted and does absolutely nothing to address subpar performance, ability to measure success and guage ROI. I also don’t believe another $2350 per annum is going to entice anyone from out of state to move into state.

If the desire is to fix the issue of the state’s school system, you might as well light that money on fire for all the good it will benefit the students.

I look at it as a supply and demand problem. Demand is high for teachers, supply is low. So you essentially hire anyone that can speak and has a degree. Increase the wage and lower the demand. Once you can start being more selective on who you hire the cream will rise to the top and the **** can be pushed out. I don't think any amount of increase is going to entice out of staters to come here, atleast none worth a damn. Best we can hope for us to sure up future teaching grads to stay and work from their. Gotta stop the bleeding in education first.

They're harming the parents and kids whether you are willing to admit that or not. They're OK with forcing parents and kids into a very negative situation to further their goal. Even if I agree with that goal a strike is not the answer.
The legislature is harming if anyone. Just agree to 1% more and there’ll be school this week.

Lol at the cuckservatives wanting to skimp on paying the people educating their children.

That was a pretty weak tweak on the word conservative. Anyway....,

Are the current teachers in WV performing in a similar manner and providing the same or better results than teachers in states with better salaries?

A link would be great. ....and I’ll even warn you that you’re walking into a trap.

Teachers are willing to keep harming parents and kids for 1%. Parents are spending millions on child care and kids are falling behind for 1%. The legislature didn't strike. You have to take responsibility for disrupting hundreds of thousands of people.

I wanted to teach math, but they told me that as an engineer that knowing algebra, trigonometry, calculus and advanced engineering mathematics, along with rel life examples of the practical application and use of these, is not good enough.

It just doesn't add up.
That’s crazy and part of the problem.

It’s just 1% less.....teachers should just agree it doesn’t really matter.

...then there’ll be school this week.

How many counties have passed education levies over the years vs how many keep voting them down? I know here in Mon County I cannot remember the last one that did not pass, let alone by a large margin. A lot of the issue starts there in my opinion.

They always pass in Ohio County. Teachers in Ohio Co also receive a bonus of around $1300 if he/she miss less than 5 days.

What would you suggest teachers do then? You don't want the quality ones to leave, and you don't want them to strike to increase pay/benefits. Do you expect the state government to tackle this issue on its own without being pushed?? How else should they make their voices heard? Again I think these are hard concepts for the oldest and one of the most uneducated states in the country. Its not 1960 anymore and people aren't going to stick around and work in the place they were born. Twenty first century life is about mobility.

How do you attract quality personal to WV or are we just going to assume all teachers are the same and quality ones that leave can easily be replaced?
What can they do? organize and vote out the government they don’t want. No, instead the **** the rest of us. Our teacher has asked for support via Dojo (group email app)...I told her to go **** herself and get back in the classroom.

That is why you pre-test and then post-test to measure the difference.

I agree that would be a viable and logical option. However, that’s not how merit-based pay for teachers would work unfortunately. It also doesn’t factor in other variables that affect a student’s academic proficiency.

Ok, let me use your MATH to help get the point across...

Teacher makes 47000 a YEAR and works 200 days, as stated per you. Teacher makes 235.00 a DAY.
Non Teacher makes 47000 a YEAR and works 261 days, as stated per you. Non Teacher makes 180.07 a DAY.

So again, explain to me how a teacher works the same amount of time and makes less than any other person in a non teaching industry at the same annual salary.

You make no sense.
Let’s compare them to other teachers and look at salary per pupil... where WV ranks 23 nationally

You seem to not like others expressing their opinions.

I sincerely apologize that it seems like that, because it was not my intent. I just know I wouldn’t presume to know what individuals in other industries deserve and I certainly wouldn’t tell them that they couldn’t fight for what they feel they is right.

I pass 6 teacher strike locations on the way to work each day. On Friday, one didn't have anyone show up to strike. Three had 10% of the crowd that was there on other days, and the other 2 had 50%. Looked to me like the strike was over and teachers were enjoying their day off.
It was too cold to protest.

Not all private school students are better off. There are good ones and not so good ones. The reason why there are good ones should be obvious.

I know this first hand, the private school I sent my daughter too, was more about hounding for donations and getting grant money than actually teaching the kids. Horrible experience.

Local cost of living increases can be dealt with through local levy rate increases dedicated to teacher pay. Then every tax payer in the state does not have to pay for the higher cost of teachers in other counties.

I always hear "livable wage", yet I know teachers with big pickup trucks towing bass boats and camper trailers down the road. The got more vehicles than me.

I went to UHS and had the same situation basically with a certain "well known" guidance counselor. Was told I would never amount to ****, don't waste my time going to college because the best I could hope for was to shovel coal like my father, grandfather and so on. That is were the system is broken, as you said. I ended up doing just fine even without his assistance. Now on the other side their were some VERY good teachers in school that I owe a lot to, however for every good one there were about 2-3 subpar ones as well.

Miss Christian......

I've really got no opinion on this topic. However I just wanted to jump in as this thread is reaching "Rich to Michigan" levels of epicness.

I thought you could type a reply that could be reasonably rational. There’s no way you even understand what you just wrote.

Now you are just posting for attention. You win, you got a little from me. Going to go filet some fish and make dinner for the family.......

This. Of course, sports betting will depend on the upcoming U.S. Supreme Court case.

If any one here watched the proceedings of the Finance Committee and of the Senate Session yesterday, you would see who is causing the problem. Mitch Carmichael and a few of his cronies (Ferns, Blair, etc.) are on a huge power trip right now. Teachers in general have been treated like crap for quite a while. The government has instituted ridiculous demands on educators, taking away input and control from local school districts. Perhaps if the lawmakers, who make @$28,000 for sixty days of work, cared more about the workers in this state rather than pumping up their egos and pocketbook, this would get settled. This is exactly why I can't stand political parties in general. The average legislator blindly follow what their party leaders tell them to do and completely ignore what their constituents want. Not to mention the kickbacks they receive from the lobbyists, who also tell them how to vote. Term limits and no more "donations" for them would be a good start. There are many ways to raise money for pay raises for all state workers - slightly increase taxes on oil and gas, reinstate some measure of the food tax, and allow legalized and taxed pot. If any of these legislators would dare venture into a classroom today and actually teach, I imagine very few of them would last longer than a week. Yet, they expect the teachers to "trust them" despite the fact that they have been completely untrustworthy. I hope the teachers stay 55 strong and stand up to these fools. Our state has blindly allowed out of state interests to basically steal our resources - timber, coal, oil and gas, and now our young and brightest. This has got to stop, and some inconveniences will have to occur for anything to change.
