And the announcers were making it seem like he was blanketed. Single coverage with atleast a yard of separation and still don’t give him a chance? Just have to be able to pull the trigger and trust your guy to make a play! Armstrong would have yolo’d that baby up there no doubt!
Maybe he isn’t making those individual plays in practice, that’s why AM doesn’t trust him.

I throw no shade at Liewer. If #2 could throw the ball he’d have a couple TD’s already. But Liewer and Falk are not Renfrow, or Swift, or Pederson, or Westerkamp. 4 & 5 sitting on the bench while we fail to pick up yards is a fault on the coaches.

I don’t see an issue with our WR’s. They are open decent amount of time and hell…watch any of these competitive games and the QB’s are throwing to dudes in double coverage with nothing more than a few inches of space for back of the end zone 30 yard touchdowns. The issue is our QB.

Cmon dude. Let's not compare preseason games to real games. We recognize Renfro as a quality walk on and a decent NFL player. Let's not act like he's the second coming of Jerry Rice. He made a play or two vs Ramsey in a preseason game...Great!

Let's not act like he's a Jalen Ramsey type talent or player though. This is the problem I have. If our walk ons WERE Renfro type guys I wouldn't be complaining about them. Using Renfro proves the point. Very good walk on capable of playing in the NFL. Nobody is complaining about guys like that who play.

Also let's remember this is the exception and not the rule.

Sure Renfrow's not a top NFL wr yet, if ever. But he is a complete stud who almost single handedly dismantled Alabama's defense in a national title game. He's also gotten significant playing time in his first two years in the NFL, so he is a very good receiver.

I wouldnt say very good relative to NFL WRs. I'd say he's decent. I wouldn't say he almost single handedly dismantled Bama either. I'd reserve that for D Watson but if that's how you seen it we didn't view it the same. But again this isn't about him to me. I wish we had a walk on who was Renfro. Unfortunately we don't and I don't think we have anyone in the same ballpark. I'm good with walk ons who are productive and bring something to the table. I'm just not into playing them just cause.... That's all holla

He's getting some reps but it sounds like he missed some practice and is having some issues with the plays. If he ever gets up to full speed with the offense he can be a beast. IMO, we've got as much talent at WR as we've had that I can remember.

The WRs tonight weren't getting separation tonight in this FSU/ND game either but Coan and Milton were hitting them in stride where the defense couldn't defend it. The one long TD pass from Coan was perfectly thrown. Quite a show.
Sure. Against good competition, both sides will win battles. WRs will be covered and the QB or the WR can make big plays. The more you win the battle to get open, the more consistently you will be in a position to make a play without extraordinary effort.

I have a pretty simply question. Do you think our coaches or more specifically Scott attempts to get more walk ons on special teams playing time? OR do you think these guys are the best guys we have to play said positions?

Holla
I think those guys might actually be the best options. But to me it's more of an indictment of our scholarship talent than favoritism toward walk-ons. If a guy is bigger, faster and just a better athlete, they should be on the field. So the question is why aren't they? Well, some of those scholarship guys are probably busts and just are not good football players. But for the others, I am not sure to be honest.

I hear ya..I just disagree. I absolutely believe there is a concerted effort to get walk ons on the field for special teams units.

I just watch him play. Nothing more than that and it tells me all I need to know. I didn't call him slow, white walk on, or anything else. He just isn't a good WR to me. We have better ,more dangerous guys who actually have upside. Their ceilings are much higher yet for whatever reason we are content with playing guys who have the highest floor instead of the highest ceiling. We will never agree on this so I'll leave it alone. I'm not ok watching our more talented guys portal out because they don't do things "the right way" . While guys who DO do things "the right way" show every week why they shouldn't be starting or seeing significant reps.

In life, ya gotta do things the right way. The uber successful are talented, but also do the right things. I don't think we cut corners and expect to get away with it. I am speculating here, but when coaches watch film and practice and do not have confidence in a kid being in the right place, making blocks and good decisions, ultimately he is passed up for a more sure thing.

It could be we take on projects, hoping we can fix the shortcomings. I don't know.

Bottom line is Manning and Betts should have risen to the top. They have not, so a transfer in Toure comes in and is instantly the no. 1 AND plays like it. A guy on his 3rd school is no. 2 and plays like it.

The other talented players are fighting for the scraps with the Walk-ons. That's on them.

I hear ya I just disagree. At some point there is a baseline level of talent that you have to have to be competent as a D1 athlete. Imo in some cases I don't care how hard you work, how often you do the right things, and how great a teammate you are. It's simply not gonna matter as you don't have enough talent to matter.

I'm not sure how many guys we have like that but there is a few I could think of who fit that description. To me as a coach it's your job to get the best outta guys. It doesn't always work but you have to try. You don't take the ez way by putting the kid who knows the playbook out there.

I think our coaches do that and over value what a guy does at practice to the point it skewers their view of what a kid REALLY IS.

We just have a difference in philosophy. You and I and I think the coaches probably see things much closer to your way. Hopefully they get enough guys playing well or it might just cost them their jobs.

Our offense is already severely limited. Let the playmakers make plays. What's the worst that could happen? We finally get a few big plays downfield more than 30 yards?? Toss it up and let Manning, Brown, Allen and Betts go get it.
Or the WR cuts the wrong way and the pass ends up in the safety's arms. That's a classic. Back in the day one of my frat brothers played center for the Huskers. We had a Juco transfer RB who was really fast....but he couldn't remember the plays. My friend said "we have to tell him where to run in the huddle and whether we're pitching it to him or handing it off". I'm not sure that strategy works well with WRs other than maybe a couple of fly patterns per game.

walk-ons are mostly to plug holes, mostly in practice, sometimes in games.. if your star athlete, fails a drug test, flakes on practice, gets in a he said she said, is forever on the injury list, or other various failures.

then every once in a while you land a real good one. but I hear your south dakota states, and other teams are collecting them up more, and we can't just hog a lot of them anymore..with staff cuts and other communist policies.

Shoot give me a Deshaun Watson talent at QB and I'll let you have Renfro, Liewer, and all future Makovicka spawn.
