Wright is a great coach — but anyone’s crazy to call him better than Cal.
Cal has been to Final Fours with THREE different programs, two of whom were essentially mid-majors when he took over. That’s insane.
Cal’s strategy is to assemble the most talented roster possible. It’s not to redshirt half the kids that go through the program, like Wright. Wright can do that because Villanova has an extremely small alumni base, who are probably more concerned with the school’s academic standing than athletics. He can be extremely patient with developing his team — Cal doesn’t have that liberty.
If tomorrow Cal said the plan was to start recruiting 3 and 4 stars, redshirt them, and keep them around 5 years, and that it may start paying dividends by 2021 or 2022, people would be irate!
Kudos to Wright. But that strategy would not fly with BBN, or any Blue Blood for that matter.
