The answer is still basketball. Just as a hypothetical example, let's just say UK wins a football championship this year or next. Then what happens? Stoops likely gets poached by a 'football school' and it's back to years of finding the next Stoops. And whatever bump in money and recruiting will be gone in a few short years. Do you want to be the hands down GOAT in basketball and mediocre/competitive in football, or do you want to be elite in basketball and still mediocre/competitive in football again? Sure a football championship would be a blast, but basketball is what butters Kentucky's bread.
If we won a national championship in football, why would Stoops go to a "football school"? At that point, we would be a football school.

I LOVE UK Basketball and Football equally. That being said, as others have also pointed out, a UK Football National Championship would raise ALL sports at UK. Football is the driver for ALL other NCAA sports. It would give our program the rare double with championships in both of the revenue sports. Cal will win another championship within the next 5 years, so adding a football championship to that would make UK Athletics the top school in the country. Look what it did for UF.

It's football for me at this point and it's not even close!!

Win two more basketball titles, then do this poll again. For me, it's basketball right now, but damn, if we won it all in football, I'd streak the quad every night for a month.

Because Kentucky is absolutely a basketball schol and nothing will change that. You can deal in all the hypotheticals you want. Doesn't change anything.
If you mean Kentucky’s basketball accomplishments won’t be forgotten and we are recognized as having an excellent men’s bb program when people hear the name ā€œUKā€, then I agree.

That said, there’s nothing wrong with gaining ground and having pundits recognize UK as a great ā€œfootball schoolā€ as well.

I swear the thought of U.K. Football gaining attention scares the lot of you.

Hot take! :)

The point is, any benefits gained from one single solitary championship will be relatively short lived. Washington won one in 1991. How is that benefitting them now? Same for Colorado in 1990. BYU and Pitt have also won championships. None are mentioned as a "football school" when discussing football programs. I swear, the idea that UK is not considered a football school scares the lot of you.

Meh, my choice of football has very little to do with the "long term benefits" of winning a CFB national championship, the notoriety, or becoming a "football school." That stuff is nice but at the end of the day it's just stuff to talk about.

I'm looking at it from the perspective of, this is entertainment. Which one would make me, in the moment, lose my effing mind the most? And the answer is football. It would be so surreal to see the University of Kentucky win a college football championship that this poll is an easy one for me.

So are those then considered ā€œbasketball schoolsā€ or just not anything?

How would you classify the following?
- Tennessee
- Michigan State
- Iowa

Football, not even close. I'm surprised so many are voting basketball.

Kentucky has been and always will be a basketball school. But if UK were to win a championship in football, which is as likely as me winning the lottery, you're talking about beating Bama in the SEC title game, beating the likes of Ohio State/Oklahoma/Clemson/Oregon etc in the playoffs....I mean, that would be unbelievable. I don't think there has been a team to win their first title in the past 25-30 years in football so there's no parity. If a traditionally bad football school like us won it would be touted as one of the greatest championships of all time purely from an underdog perspective.

Football is still king in America, I'd love to see UK at the top of that mountain instead of a mountain we've been on top of many times and will likely be on top of many times in the future. That said this will almost assuredly never happen as the talent gap between the top 4 football schools is so big, but man...just imagine beating Ohio State in a championship game. Would never forget it.

Diehard UK basketball and Football fan. Like a majority of Kentucky fans we think basketball is king because that is what we are good at. And dont get me wrong I love UK basketball, but football is King. Winning a NC in football has way more relevance to all sporting fans than basketball. Way more money for the university etc.

One thing is for sure—there are fewer CFB teams that always ā€œEat Firstā€ and it’s tough to knock them off. We’ve seen lots more of CBB win it all in the last 25 years. I give CBB the nod for parity.

Definitely basketball. It would be awesome but I don't want UK to try to become a football school. I love them having success but in no way do I want to basketball to suffer.

Why do you guys keep saying UK will win a title in basketball in the next five years? That guarantees it won’t happen.

We will not even go to a Final Four once in the next five seasons.

Football and it's not close. A run like that could set us up for future success unlike anything seen before.
If cal had his MOJO back like it looks like he won't need help and will snag another soon anyways. They already have 8, narrowly missed a handful more. To take this away from football would be crazy right now.

I would go with football in this fantasy scenario. The likelihood of it happening in football is slim to none due to the SEC difficulty, the inability to beat TN and FL in the same season (may happen this season though!), as well as UGA looming beyond that and of course Alabama if you make it to the SEC title game. It would be amazing to watch though and well earned.

Of course, it seems pretty far away in basketball as well after recent seasons. When UK makes the Elite 8, they fold like a Tubby team of late and of course 2015 still stings in all of our minds. Basketball is a more forgiving season during the season though, but then 6 wins and one bad night makes it tough in March/April.

I voted football because, while I understand the views on both, we've never won a title in football, while hoops is much more likely to win one soon anyway.

I'll soon turn 59, and like all UK fans I've suffered through some pretty crappy football from my team, so yes, if it were possible I'd wish the next title to go to the football program.

Why would basketball suffer? That doesn't make sense.
Exactly, both are self-sustaining profit centers at UK (which is actually a rare thing if you think about it.

Basketball doesn’t need football revenue and vice versa.

What I understand, though, both programs support Olympic sports.

Cal was coming off a good season it might be different. If UK won both in the same year, that would work. I've seen schools try to transition before, it just hurts both sports.

We can financially compete with anyone to keep Stoops here. We have top 25 fan support with a program that has been considered a joke for decades. We already play in the premier college football conference. Our facilities (outside of our indoor practice facility) are better than most of the traditional powers. Stoops has an amazing contract here with far more lenient expectations. It has given him time to slowly implement a working strategy. We were never going to win the SEC overnight from the pit we lived in for 40 years.

There are really only two reasons we're not already a "football school". A poor reputation/tradition that haunts us due to decades of negligence, and weak in-state talent, which can be nullified by being Ohio's path to the SEC (like Stoops is doing).

Most of the ingredients are there for us to be every bit of the football school that any other SEC school is. It just needs time to cook. A football title would advance us ten years overnight. Only four schools have won the title in the CFP era: Ohio State, Clemson, Bama, and LSU. That's it.

Plus it's not like we won't literally always be in the hunt for a basketball title.
This was awesome. Most cogent point on this thread.

I love UK and the football team...that said they'd be about 4th on my list for title wishes.

1. UK bball
2. Reds World Series
3. Bengals Super Bowl
4. UK football

Ironically I think this is the most likely order for a title as well....not necessarily this season, but in general.

Id go
1. Reds World Series
2. UK football
3. UK basketball
4. Buccaneers Super Bowl (it’s nice not being a Bengals fan lol)

That’s a good point. I’d hate to see a main sport suffer in deference to another main sport by the administration. Thank goodness that never happened at UK.

I’m convinced you live in a fantasy world.
You never told me your definition of a ā€œbasketball schoolā€. Is it funding, revenue? Tradition (which I agree with)? I mentioned programs above. Are they neither basketball or football schools?
