As a UK fan in all sports would you rather win the college football national championship or another hoops national championship Hypothetically for football this season. Me and a few co workers had this debate and it was a good one.
Thoughts ? 😎

I actually am gonna say basketball. I'd rather get to and pass UCLA in basketball to become the undisputed and unanimous kings kings of college basketball, than just a one off magic season on football. Don't get me wrong, a football championship run would be awesome! I just don't think it would have the lasting effects that getting closer to UCLA would have.

Basketball, without any doubt. Kentucky is the greatest basketball program of all time and every success adds to that legacy.

The Cats winning a football championship would be like Alabama winning a basketball championship -- very cool but not directly important in burnishing the brand.
I think a legit factor nowadays would be the money and NIL deals that having a really successful football program would bring

I know UK isn’t hurting but they start making the football playoffs and we go to another level financially. More NIL deals for football players would likely result in bigger NIL deals for basketball players

My first thought was this but I thought about it more and I think a football championship would be HUGE for UK overall. Don’t get me wrong it’s a tough tough choice but basketball titles are soon to come but football unlikely

Had to go basketball. I absolutely understand the football argument, but I want Kentucky basketball to be known as the ABSOLUTE top program without debate.

That said….

Football

One reason is it's just a better sport than basketball and our fans are much cooler on the whole. Second reason is that football is the money maker. Third basketball will be a club sport enough that it won't matter.

I don’t think anyone has suggested that it would. But it would greatly elevate the entire athletic program to new heights. Whether we like it or not, football runs college athletics.
Be that as it may, both programs are doing quite well currrently. What heights would a football championship elevate the entire program to? But a random football championship, baseball championship, or any other championship would soon be forgotten by virtually everybody that isn't a UK fan. Championship #9 would further cement UK as the top program of all time.

It's all moot anyway. A great talking point, but one is likely to happen and one is likely to NEVER happen.

A football championship will not be forgotten, the sport is just too big especially in college athletics

The answer is still basketball. Just as a hypothetical example, let's just say UK wins a football championship this year or next. Then what happens? Stoops likely gets poached by a 'football school' and it's back to years of finding the next Stoops. And whatever bump in money and recruiting will be gone in a few short years. Do you want to be the hands down GOAT in basketball and mediocre/competitive in football, or do you want to be elite in basketball and still mediocre/competitive in football again? Sure a football championship would be a blast, but basketball is what butters Kentucky's bread.

I love UK and the football team...that said they'd be about 4th on my list for title wishes.

1. UK bball
2. Reds World Series
3. Bengals Super Bowl
4. UK football

Ironically I think this is the most likely order for a title as well....not necessarily this season, but in general.

Why don't you ask the same question on the football board?

We can financially compete with anyone to keep Stoops here. We have top 25 fan support with a program that has been considered a joke for decades. We already play in the premier college football conference. Our facilities (outside of our indoor practice facility) are better than most of the traditional powers. Stoops has an amazing contract here with far more lenient expectations. It has given him time to slowly implement a working strategy. We were never going to win the SEC overnight from the pit we lived in for 40 years.

There are really only two reasons we're not already a "football school". A poor reputation/tradition that haunts us due to decades of negligence, and weak in-state talent, which can be nullified by being Ohio's path to the SEC (like Stoops is doing).

Most of the ingredients are there for us to be every bit of the football school that any other SEC school is. It just needs time to cook. A football title would advance us ten years overnight. Only four schools have won the title in the CFP era: Ohio State, Clemson, Bama, and LSU. That's it.

Plus it's not like we won't literally always be in the hunt for a basketball title.
