At other schools in a situation like this or similar to this, what would the President of the School be saying in public and what would they doing in private?Serious question-is President Barchi involved in any way to turn things around?

This embarrassment has to be hurting student applications as well. A good sports program builds pride and makes for generous alumni. My son a HS senior has bled Scarlet his entire life. He has great grades/ scores and is looking elsewhere. Michigan Ross, Penn State Schreyers ( yikes) ,Texas McCoombs and others. If Rutgers football was back at 2006-2008 levels it would be much higher on his list. I'm sure there are more kids like him.

Trotter, in my opinion applications soar when a school wins a national championship/ has a great season ex Clemson, Villanova, but I think few kids that were considering a college decide to NOT go there because one of the sports is struggling. Applications and visits to Rutgers continue to soar. If you check general campus tours for RU, they are booked right now weeks in advance. In addition, tours for the Honors College, Engibeering, Business, SEBS, etc. are much higher than in the past.

ok, I'm just sad that my son probably won't end up at my alma mater and the place he attended games since he was 3 yrs old.

Barchi does not care at all. He never has cared about athletics. He does not understand that the university suffers with overall perception when this major mess that the AD he hired has effed this up so badly. So, he was too busy with mergers and academics to simultaneously address athletics? That is pure BS. I it not that he was too busy. It is that he just doesn't care, and has totally misjudged the impact that all this negative press has tarnished to overall perception of Rutgers. He has done a great deal of damage by making us look foolish and incapable in football.

Trotter, I get what you are saying. Been a Rutgers fan since 1976 and the only time I can remember this much universal negative view toward a Rutgers sport was when Craig Littlepage was the basketball coach. Don’t know what sports your son likes, but I am very enthusiastic about Coach Pike. At the open practice today, everyone was in a positive mood and the tour of the new RWJ Barnabas Center was icing on the cake. And of course, wrestling has just had a great year.

Oh the Littlepage years... I attended through them. Then when Wenzel struggled I talked **** that it was time to move on. Many years now I have longed for the early years of Wenzel. Over half my life since RU has been to the dance. Don't underestimate how long the RU admin can be incompetent at this.

Dr., you are right. For those that don’t know, President Barchi came from a position at a school that had NO ATHLETICS at all. I want someone who is very qualified to lead Rutgers AND comes with a substantial background at a Power Five or Group of Five university.

Barchi thinks (and wishes) he was running Holy Cross. He would never in a million years understand that being considered the worst P5 football team hurts all the other facets of the university.

ScarletScourge, there are other schools that have had issues over the years, that is true. Ask BYU fans if they are all on board with leaving the Mountain West. Ask Georgia Tech and Tulane fans about no longer being in the SEC.Ask South Carolina fans about leaving the ACC and wandering for decades before they were rescued by the SEC. Ask UConn fans about the AAC.

The university is doing better than ever academically, a bad football program isn’t going to affect that.

The administration isn’t going to start caring about athletics now after not caring the past 150 years. There won’t be a major coaching hire, nor will there be a game changing AD hire. Next president will almost certainly be 100% academic focused with athletics an afterthought. And to be honest, if we continue to climb in the academic rankings I’m fine with that but would prefer us to drop out of the B1G if that is the direction the school wants to go in.

Barchi is already in cruise mode, working on his smile-and-wave technique as he's already announced his upcoming retirement. He gives zero F's, S's, cares, whatever-you-got, he has none of it. And he ran off his assumed replacement-in-waiting his last go around. So yeah, great job, Bob.

My son happily went to Rutgers Honors College and so did quite a few others from Biotech and High Tech High School in Monmouth County. Most smart kids don't care about sports. Especially STEM kids. It's why they go to MIT, Carnegie Mellon, Cal Tech and schools like that. Sure, there are some who care, but most top STEM students don't give a crap about sports.

That's STEM , not Business and other Liberal Arts majors. If you don't think kids RU would LOVE to have choose other B1G schools because they want the total experience you're only kidding yourself.

I'll say this much- not many Honors College students are heading to the games. And they are not all STEM over there.
However, that tide can turn if the program starts winning. I remember our visit to Cal in the summer of 2018. The tour guide was mocking the football team (which we thought was a bad look). Their student section has been full lately. Win and they will come.

We need that 2006 atmosphere again, not just for the kids, for us too!

Knightshift, there are some high school kids and parents who do not bother to apply to the Honors College because they think it is limited to STEM students. It is NOT limited to certain majors. I wish more parents, kids, and even guidance counselors would make their students aware of this.

There are not enough facepalm gifs and emojis to adequately convey how dumb this sounds...sorry poster...if your kid is thinking this way I hope four years at a university (whichever one he chooses) smacks some real world sense into him.
Wow...

Some kids (and families, and donors, and faculty, and school administrators, and state legislators, and news media) consider the athletics department to be part of the college experience. If an 18 year old kid told me he'd prefer to go to Michigan instead of Rutgers because Michigan has a history of winning in football and mens basketball (and lots of other things) and Rutgers is comparatively the bottom-of-the-barrel ... I wouldn't blame him. It's not like our school's academics are blowing away all the other state universities to the point that anything other than academics are irrelevant. We're not Harvard, Yale or Princeton (or even Rice or Vanderbilt). US News has us ranked below Ohio State, Penn State, Florida, Florida State and Miami - those are our academic peers (and they all give a damn about athletics, unlike us).

Northwestern maintained their reputation despite their horrid football team.through all those years. In fact they used to embrace their level ofsuck. I don't think the 2 are related.

Quite honestly, in terms of academics, there is very little difference between most tier 1 ish schools, including Rutgers.

The network and resources at the tip Harvard, Yale, Princeton, Stanford are unparalleled- which makes them imo the only ones to splurge tuition on if accepted.

Going to games and selecting a school for academics are exclusive to each other. A 18 year old selecting a college because the football is good is not the way to go.

In other schools (that prioritize success in athletics) large boosters would never have let the situatuon get to this point of embarrassment. They would likely be privately in Barchi's and the BOG's ear to ensure this gets remedied.

The academics are the same at every school. Math, science, literature....they don't change. You can learn as much as you want at any major college. The difference is the rest of the experience....including being able to have a good FB and BB team to root for for the rest of your life. If you say this doesn't matter....then why are you on here reading this post?

I can't understand paying for tuition at the Cult as a NJ resident.

RU is a better school. Why pay more for less?

Michigan OK. But no other Northeast public is worth it over RU if they're admitted.

As a PSU professor for many years, I can tell you that, for undergraduates, there is not much difference in the education you get across the B10 schools. Undergrad classes are often taught by grad students, profs do research, the text books don't vary that much across undergrad classes. Rutgers provides a great education at a good price for in state students. Students would be amazingly pumped if we had a good football team.

That's just plain stupid or naive. So you actually believe that NJ kids when comparing like minded schools don't factor is non academic things like sports programs, campus, location, weather, etc. The SEC schools are swimming in northeastern applications and it isn't because the library is top shelf.

It's because they can't get into the northeast schools. (Minus Duke)

ScarletScourge, that is not correct. My nephew could have gone to just about any school in the Northeast, except the Ivies. He runs into smart kids from New Jersey, Connecticut,Pennsy, and New York all the time at Florida. There are a lot of factors why more and more kids are going to schools in the South. Weather is important to some.A big one is parents encouraging their kids to get out of the Northeast due to the overpopulation, congestion, traffic, sky high cost of living and general rudeness of SOME of the people. Many kids themselves know that being comfortable owning a home will be much easier without the overpriced housing. In addition to property taxes being $2,000 in the South as opposed to $10-15,000.
