So here is what a lot of people are saying:
1. We are not getting an elite SF (Brown or Ingram).
2. Poythress is not a 3 and he is better off playing the 4.
3. Matthews isn't going to be ready to be a starter for us next season.
4. We can't go with a 3 guard lineup because none of our projected guards (Ulis, Newman, Briscoe) can defend a 3.
So, who plays the 3 for us next year?
Do we go with Poythress, who at least has the size to guard a 3? If so, we negate our speed and have a 3 with minimum perimeter skills on offense.
Do we go small and have our biggest elite guard (Briscoe) defend the 3? If so, it likely hurts us on the boards and on defense, but our offense probably flows a little better.
Do we go after a graduate transfer? Do we go with Matthews?
I'm not sure we can know yet.
Personally, I don't see us getting an elite SF and I cringe at the thought of Poythress at the 3 on offense, so I am predicting a 3 guard lineup with Briscoe guarding the 3 spot most of the time. When we face a Dekker type SF we move Poythress over and go big.
Small ball. Speed kills. DDMO. Drive the ball with our 3 guards. Attack, attack, attack.
That's what I think we should do.
It will be interesting to see what Cal will do if he doesn't land an elite SF. He probably goes with Poythress since he seems to value defense and rebounding over offense.
Cal will figure it out and we will be fine. I just enjoy discussing and debating it.
Thoughts?
Once again, I cringe at the thought of Poythress at the 3. He's a natural 4 in college.
