like I told one small brain here earlier today, it's a huge huge huge deal FOX owns the B1G's football rights and not the conference. caps our future earnings potential tremendously.
Nebraska is 47-55 in conference play in the Big Ten and Maryland is 23-52. None of the additions have added much in terms of football.
Nebraska at least has the eyeballs even though we’ve sucked the past 7 years
I will criticize the Rutgers addition when we start winning again. Until then we are just another bottom tier B1G team looking up at the others. Yeah, Rutgers sucks, but we have no room to talk right now despite our glory days.
You are so dramatic. You will rant and rave for the next 7 years. And the Big 10 will still sign another contract that is bigger than the SEC. And you will find something else to nitpick about. The SEC is in bed with Disney while the Big 10 is married to Fox. Who would you rather be partnered with?
We have been competitive and have an average big 10 record. We arent what we want to be but we have brought value. Rutgers isnt on the same planet

CBS saw the writing on the wall with the SEC's upcoming negotiation and opted to air cheap B1G games instead of ponying up for premier SEC programming
having a single network own the majority stake in your largest asset - which can only make money from itself and its rivals - is not a good thing
B1G's owner FOX's market cap is 1/10th that of Disney ($16B vs $160B)

Fox own a majority stake in BTN. Oh no. How terrible. The Big 10 still bids the rights to games. Look at the fact that the Big 10 has 3 networks airing games and despite your ranting still has the biggest TV deal ever. ESPN wouldn't even give more money for UT and OU and you are ranting about the BTN being majority owned by Fox? Yeah, what a horrible situation to be in. Lol.
Big Ten Network (61% owned by FOX), NOT the Big Ten Conference, owns programming rights to ALL B1G football inventory, including the B1G title game
CBS is paying B1G relative peanuts to air Tier 3 games, negotiated by B1G/FOX
NBC is paying B1G to air Tier 2 games, negotiated by B1G/FOX
FOX literally owns all Tier 1 games + the B1G title game in perpetuity
the B1G cannot bid any rights to any football games without FOX at the table, because the B1G doesn't own those rights, the Big Ten Network (61% owned by FOX) does.
how much overall % of the FOX corporation do you believe they'll pay the B1G in the future, especially as NFL/Super Bowl rights continue to explode? because that's where a large majority of the "biggest TV deal ever" is coming from, and where a large majority of all future deals will also come from.
the SEC's next deal will dwarf this one (obviously), and the B1G will have exhausted its traditional avenues to catch up.
this is 101 level stuff. why keep buying the milk when you already own the cow?

Conference realignment does allow Big 10 teams leverage so that fox can't competely gut reimbursement to Big 10 schools. The conferences are becoming so ****** up that it is certainly within the realm of possibility for OSU, Michigan, Penn State, Wisconsin, UCLA, USC to suddenly leave to the SEC or Dixey conference or whatever it will be called when it has 20-25 teams. That mean Fox will be left with a network airing Nebraska vs. Rutgers, or Iowa Vs Maryland. It is still within Fox's interest to compensate their top teams at least. I wonder if there will eventually be scaled revenue sharing to keep the big dogs happy.

or, FOX can do what it already did with a large swath of programming rights 6 years ago and sell them as a package to (gasp!) Disney.
cotton's high in B1G country right now - there's no denying it.
but without at least another large percentage owner in B1G football rights (BTN) (Amazon? AppleTV?) to pump prices, the league will lose leverage & buyers when trying to compete with the shrinking NFL networks (NBC, CBS) just as it has with Disney (ESPN), which understandably doesn't want to give money to its biggest competitor (FOX).
Should have been here when all the sheep said we needed our own Network to combat the LHN. Pretty sure nobody had a cogent thought on that. That was ridiculous on the surface. Jesus.
Additions to the conference aren’t about wins. They’re about subscriptions and eyeballs. And Nebraska brings ratings. The highest rated big 10 network game ever is a bad Nebraska team vs Iowa. The Huskers, even when they suck, bring eyeballs.
Rutgers is the opposite of Nebraska. Near zero football history (aside from starting the sport in 1869), but brings a LOT of money. Nebraska is a blue blood, but brings little in the way of local TV money.
There is no way that the Big Ten would be close to the SEC in payouts per team without Rutgers and Maryland.
