I wonder the same thing. And I’ll be interested to see how many of these seasons he can stack up. I can’t even think of a comp for how he’s started his career. Back to back years below 2 era has not been done all that often but I can’t think of anyone who has done it to start their career. Even the Randy Johnson, Pedro, Clemens, Maddox… those guys had some seasons that rival what Skenes has done but definitely not to start their career.
I read where he didn't even pitch until his junior year. I found that hard to believe, so I dove into USSSA and PG and it appears to be true, as he hardly has any stats. Might just be a case of his arm being the liveliest at the perfect time. And makes sense because Air Force was his best offer out of high school, plus he didn't have to throw a ton in 2020 because the season got cancelled.
Be a good test case considering he does still throw so hard, which most people think is more so the key for UCL issues rather than just overuse. And since he was matured and was getting good coaching by the time he was pitching a ton, maybe he can ward it off.
I still wonder what our record would have been in 2023 had we signed him. The baseball Cam Newton. I know we sucked but a guy like that flips the whole script.
