Any chance they are being processed to make room for incoming class? Not implying just asking. May be easy to find out looking at roster and incoming class.

After watching us a good bit this year... I'll say we're just not built to compete at a high level. It's crazy that we have the home run hitters we have, but struggle to win games. Teams like Washington absolutely destroy us with small ball.

I'm guessing we don't have the pitching that oher teams have. I don't really keep up with them however.

We need one elite pitcher to give us a shot. Its a crazy *** mystery that Vann hasn't been able to get one. That was her calling card at Alabama - an elite pitching coach.

Mississippi doesn't produce else pitching talent. There are some good hitters coming out but pitching in this state is a nightmare, as evidenced by one team having six .500 hitters in the lineup and not even making the playoffs. We're battling the entire rest of the SEC for the few in neighboring state.

Want to know how to fix it? Get rid of slow pitch softball. We are one of just four states that still sponsor slow pitch softball as a varsity sport. The entire late summer and fall is devoted to slow pitch softball when other states are developing elite pitchers.

Slowpitch has nothing to do with the pitching talent. It does suck and needs to go, but has nothing to do with pitching. It’s the total lack of legit pitching coaches and the kids/parents with the insane commitment it takes. Our population and number of girls playing is small compared to other states too. Coaching is completely lacking in MS. We’ve signed the best MS has to offer this year. She’ll contribute.

I have a friend that umps SEC softball.. she said our coach is clueless and time for change..fwiw

That's interesting. I mean, I completely believe it, but what else did she say? Fast pitch softball can be a fun sport to watch, and I always wish we were more competitive.

Something else to consider about softball is that they have different transfer rules. They don't have to sit out a year if they transferred to a different conference.

The problem with MS softball is the parents & politics...their little princesses are to precious to be coached hard/tough like they should be to be made gamers while other states seem to have much tougher players with much more grit. I know coaches who have been run out because their daddy runs to the super intendent who he's friends with to get the coaches fired....1 coach had his players sign a contract at the beginning of the year saying if they miss practice or a game they will sit the next game...little girl decides to go to a concert and misses so she sits the next game, her dad ran to the super intendent and got that coach fired.....another coach, in a post game meeting with the players says "we just can't compete when we walk 9 batters" ....little girl runs to her daddy and says coach said they lost because of her, he runs to super intendent and gets coach fired....it's all BS...when did we become such pu**y a$$ cowards that we have to F with a person's livelihood because our little princess got her feelings hurt!? Parents, news flash, playing school sports is a privilege, not a right...when those kids step inside the gate at practice or on gamedays they're not yours anymore, they belong to the coach! Hallelujah, where's the tylenol

i don’t think Mississippi has cornered the market on helicopter parents.

I know they haven't...but being someone who is not originally from here and has lived in several states. MS is by and far the worst I have ever seen or heard of for the way the parents act...also, it's not just the parents i refer to but the small town politic BS too.

So you’re an expert because you’ve lived in several states. Got it.

Show me where I said I was. All I said was that it was the worst I had ever seen and I have lived in several places. So yeah, to an extent, moreso than someone who has. Why are you so offended, I mean you have to be to make snarky comments about a generalized observation, right? I mean, it would make sense if you were one of them. After all, when you throw a rock into a pack of dogs, the one that yips is the one you hit

Chained is pretty close to spot on. Although it doesn’t apply to all the kids leaving. Even Mike Smith told his MS kids that they were princesses, right before most left. And I can tell you, few kids/parents here have any idea the dedication etc. an SEC ball player needs. Go to Cali and watch those kids. I’ve seen some insane stuff compared to what I see here for the most part. And those kids also have a lot more coaching and training options. They can work with the same people pros work with. MS is lacking. We have a lot of good athletes for our size but that’s about it.
Hell, most of the pitching coaches here are still teaching ancient methods. I can count on one hand the decent pitching coaches in MS and have fingers left.

Regardless of all the issues mentioned, If you are a head coach, you need to find a way to win or get out of the way for someone else. No excuses.

I coached my girls 10u team this year. We got killed almost every game because of 1 reason... Pitching. I quickly found out that other teams were committed to having 3 of 4 girls taking pitching lessons every week. And you could tell.

Reading further down this thread, a poster tells a story about a coach telling the girls they lost because they walk to many batters and a little girl ran off and told her parents the coach laid it on her, which he didn't... He just told the facts. The exact same thing happened to me this year. I brought our second pitcher in in the final inning and she hit or walked 6 batters in a row. We lost by one. After the game, I told the team that I took responsibility for that lose. I made a bad decision and should have stuck with our struggling starter. The calls from that kids parents started coming about 20mins after the game. "Why did you tell our kid that she cost us the game???" Um.... I didn't... I cost us the game. LOTS of cussing at me after that.

Anyway... I have learned my lesson. I've been sending my girl for pitching lessons for the last 2 months. I told the parents someone needed to step up and do it. If they wanted to win in the fall/next year, we need to have a girl who can sling it. No one stepped up.... No one was interested. No one wants to do what it takes to win, they just want to ***** that we lose.

I'm giving my kid the tools it takes to win... She loves it. Her dream is to pitch for State and if she stays committed to it then she knows I'll commit to her.

This is the truth. We don't exactly have a lot of elite basketball recruits in this state either, but Schaefer built the program up to where he could look out of state. And he toughened up the 3 stars along the way to where they could be scrappy and win some games they shouldn't on paper. I'm not saying we need a softball program that is competing for national championships, but we don't have to be as bad as we are.

When did MSU start playing fastpitch softball? I've always thought Mississippi was just way behind other states in the sport.

Jennie Finch is the same age as me. She grew up playing fastpitch softball on travel ball teams. My highschool didn't start playing fastpitch softball until after I graduated in 99.

So my point is, there are probably a lot of parents and coaches in Mississippi that really & truly are way behind in fastpitch softball knowledge. They never played it as a kid, never watched it growing up, were never coached by someone else. Compared to other parts of the country that have 2nd or 3rd generation fastpitch softball players coming up now. I think it's just going to take time for us to catch up.

That's the issue. OM is ranked and finds the girls to win with, so there are no excuses. Vann needs to win soon or get fired. Just making a regional logic is Stansbury reasoning: we cant do any better. OM shows us we can if we recruit.
