The woman’s tournament is unwatchable. I tried. Almost every top seed won throughout the tournament and most were blowouts. Yesterday, hyped game was just brutal.

Soccer, softball, volleyball, and track & field continue being the primary sports chosen by the top female athletes in high school and college. If we want better results in basketball, we need to make it the most attractive choice rather than a fifth or sixth option. Bumping the popularity, visibility, and pay of professional players may be moving that needle forward a bit.

Until something changes, college basketball for women will continue having the handful of major talent (that chose basketball over more popular sports) coalescing into the handful of top teams and the dramatic dropoff outside those teams will remain.

Consider that the average height in women's volleyball is about 6'0", although by position it runs between 5'7" and 6'3". And those women choose volleyball over basketball, most likely because the infrastructure is in place from primary school thru high school.
