WMA hunts

I’m thinking about putting in for some draw hunts on a WMA. Anyone ever done this and won? If so, how was the hunting?

I have some good land to hunt in copiah county. But I’m hoping to get a permit and go looking for a buck on some of this land in the delta.

I’ve had good luck at yazoo and Leroy Percy. We took a camper up there for half a week and got a decent buck.

Heard twin oaks isn’t terrible. I’ve never been to muscadine. Heard it wasn’t bad either.

I’ve hunted mahannah the most. I’m gonna try Phil Bryant our this year. I don’t know how the deer hunting will be this year though with disease and flooding.

Some of the biggest deer on mahannah were shot because guys would stay in longer then others and as they walked out they pushed bedding bucks towards another hunter. If you do a couple all day hunts you’ll probably have some really good luck.

Trim Cane, two miles north of Starkville is a nice duck hunting area. You will need an ATV. You can arrange to scout the various spread out spots in advance of you time slot.

I’ve hunted Charles Ray Nix (used to be Hamer) a fair bit 10-12 years ago. Saw lots of deer but never got a shot at a shooter but seen some of the biggest rubs in my life. Hunted another in or around Panola county once, can’t remember the name of it but saw a few there the one time I went. You was talking about putting in for the gun draw hunts. If you don’t get drawn I don’t know if you bow hunt but most of them anyone with a WMA permit can bow hunt most of them. I’m hoping to try Hell Creek this year, much closer.

i hunted trim cane for rabbits and did really good a few years back.

Thanks for this. I’d imagine if we get the draw, we probably will pull all day hunts.

Are they making WMA draw only. The one at Pearl River between Philadelphia Noxapater and Nanih Waiya has people in there all deer season long. My brother hunted there for years till work sent him to Tampa.

I think just a few of them are draw only. I think most allow anyone that has the WMA permit.

It’s a sad day, indeed, when you can’t get up early during the season and just go hunting at your favorite piece of PUBLIC land.

I understand that. I could be wrong about the draw process. Maybe it only gets you a section of the wma, while the rest is open to anyone.

I grew up in central Florida not deer hunting. I did turkey hunting. Once I moved to MS, I fell in love with deer hunting. I got some good private land that is pretty easy to go out and kill a doe and maybe even a decent buck. I’ve really started to like the challenge of public land. I love getting in the woods and scouting.
