Memphis will land some recruits. Probably land Wiseman as well.

With that said Memphis is not a blue blood program. Memphis is not a powerhouse basketball program that has been in existence or consistent for 100 years. They never will be. Penny will make or break his career in the next 3 years. I like Penny and wish hime luck.

Ride the wave while you can. If Memphis lands a fantastic class and doesn't make the elite 8 its over. This is fact.

Who ever said they were a blue blood?

I actually give Penny more of chance than most. He seems like the kind of guy who is willing to do just about anything to win. I see them flirting with being in the tournament most of the time.

That is obviously much different than competing for titles, however.

Ehhh I’d say they’re top 15-20

I've got UK, KU, Duke, UCLA, UNC, Indiana, Illinois, Ohio State, Michigan State, Michigan, Florida, Syracuse, Georgetown, Arkansas, Arizona, Villanova, Cincy, UConn, Oklahoma State, Louisville and NC State - at least - all ahead of them.

Still a pretty good program

And Penny

Considering he hasn't coached a game yet, the response to your statement is "not yet".

It really seems like some of you Tiger fans are creating a massive expectation for Hardaway.

I think 22 to 24 wins a year, on average, is reasonable.

Was talking about him as a player smartass

People tend to count long term success more than a few obscured years from the early 90s. I wasn't trying to be smart to your statement. Your lack of a complete statement didn't help your position's clarity, so I thought you were already counting the Penny coaching era as a future success.

Oh I’m sorry. It’s just that your unnecessary use of quotation marks made me feel that way.

Their head coach has like 2 years of AAU or Highschool experience. Of course they aren’t gonna do anything. It doesn’t matter who they land. Penny doesn’t know how to manage a locker room full of egos. This hire was purely to land some local recruits. Nothing more, and nothing less. I can’t believe any parent would be dumb enough to believe in this facade. You’re putting your trust into the unknown vs the proven commodity. What are you even doing? Risking millions.

Memphis is a fun city. I don't get the angst in this thread. It also isn't that violent. St. Louis, similarily, is ranked as 'dangerous', but I've never felt uncomfortable there either. It's all relative anyway. Murders, etc. peaked in 1990 and have steadily dropped since. NYC has gone from 2,000 murders a year to 300 for instance.

Vietnam was a police action...

Penny has a real good chance to succeed even if he turns out to be a average Coach. The Conference he plays in is a joke and with the talent he will bring in at least at first he should dominate. His test as a Coach and a program will be determined by his success in the NCAAT.

Nobody said they were blue blood but by some Memphis fans you would think that they were top 20 and always have been.

If Penny is any way successful and gets an offer, I see him gone in a heart beat. No matter if he is from that joint or not. Elvis is dead. Then what will Memphis State fans do? Who will they blame then? I know, I know, Ole "Morg" did it. He will sure get it then. It's his fault. The falsetto UK fan...[eyeroll]

I'd put about 20 to 25 programs ahead of Memphis historically.

Well you'd be WRONG and WAY WRONG.

This is a myth. 20 programs ahead? Try 40-50. And that's being generous. ESPN has them ranked somewhere in the 60's historically.

It's an overrated program from start to finish.

Tennessee owns them head to head. There's an argument the big brother (SEC football school) has had better teams historically. They do own them head to head. How many programs in the top 20 is Tennessee ahead of? If Memphis is top 20 then Tennessee is right there too.

They are to Louisville what Louisville is to UK. LOL.

they've played Cincinnati 77 times and Cincinnati owns it going away.

If you add up Louisville, Cincinatti, southern Miss, Tulsa, Virginia Tech, St. Louis, Florida St, Tennessee, Vandy.....You've got combined losses st 231. Lol. Only 38 of those are juggernauts UT and Vandy. Double ouch.

They've had more players arrested, dismissed, or murdered than have played in legitimate final fours. This is true.

They are supposed to be the best basketball team in the state of Tennessee, while Vandy and UT have winning records all time over them. They only have this perception as being better than UT historically because of UK, the SEC is tougher than what Memphis is used to playing in, UT is a football school, and UM has played in a final four while UT has an elite eight. All in all, they really aren't all that much better than UT historically.

Hell they have an 8-8 record against Tennessee STATE. I think Austin P is the only Tennessee program they actually have a winning record against. But you should probably check that.

Most of their top seasons are marred in scandal, it is what it is. Memphis has never been able to really compete at a high level without some sort of issues related. All programs have their past, but Memphis doesn't have enough great years to offset that reality. If they're winning big, somewhere, there's a problem more than likely. Similar to Pitino, how do you know the weasel is lying? Well with Memphis, how do you know they're cheating? Because they're winning. Lol.

Memphis, with all of their warts and statistics on the books, is a mediocre basketball program and nowhere near top 20.

I mean come on, their basketball coach was coaching middle school a few years ago. This isn't some big time destinations that big time coaches care about.

I actually agree with you. My 20 to 25 estimate was wrong from the moment I pressed "post reply". I was being polite to the Memphis fans but I understand it only enabled them to believe their program is better than it is.

I was trying to defuse a few of them who were butthurt that night.

Saul, they’re stupid, as a teacher you know......you can’t fix that.

We’re talking about a program way lower on the chain than Arkansas, way lower than Louisville, lower than Western Kentucky. But they’re here talking sht to the number 1 college basketball program of all time.

Their average team wouldn’t be a good practice scrimmage for Cal. Think of some of our teams and the practices.....Memphis players would be readying the ice tubs and loading the Gatorade bar.

But. They’re. Here.

Talking.

Sht.

Stupid.

Can’t fix it.
