I’m pretty sure this thing was akin to a settlement. The NCAA didn’t want this to go to court, and Memphis didn’t want to end up in the NCAA crosshairs. With this, everyone wins a little and everyone loses a little.

If Memphis had not played him or filed the lawsuit, I'd put the odds at less than 1% that a ruling would have been made by now, so it's hard to really slam them. Memphis forced the issue, and all in all, they came out about as well as could be expected

The big learning for me throughout all of this and other rulings from the last ten years is DO NOT cooperate with the NCAA. They're always on the lookout for sacrificial lambs, and if you offer yourself up on a silver platter, they'll take you up on it. Likewise, if you push back some and succeed in making them look like the idiots that everyone knows they are, you'll likely come out looking ok

If Bracky was Memphis Compliance officer, Wiseman would face a year’s suspension and No NCAA Tournament for the Tigers.

Yeah at first I was like “that’s it”. But then I saw that this just opens up the investigation and it’s just the very beginning.

NCAA is about to launch an investigation into the program because Memphis was dumb enough to play an ineligible player for 3 games, committing a level 1 violation.

Being defiant towards the NCAA sounds cool and all, but this will end poorly for Memphis. Poor leadership from the top at Memphis allowed this to happen.

They don't care. Anything the NCAA does now will come at least 2 years down the road.

Fine Penny. Suspend him a minute. Leave the kid alone.

Wiseman’s MOM receives 11.5k to move for high school basketball and Wiseman sits 12 in college. If there was a basketball team that directly benefited from that move it was East High School.

That said, you could make a good case for Penny to be punished bc this should have been disclosed the day Wiseman signed. But how did Wiseman benefit? Penny didn’t discover him. Kid was set for awhile. Who cares if his mom gets a free Uhaul and a crew to move furniture so he can play for a different high school team?

I don’t know what the NCAA cares about, but it sure as hell ain’t athletes.

What the 17 ever dude. Tutorgate was bad and a huge embarrassment for us all. It's the cool thing to pile on bracky, but I blame whoever decided it was ok to allow unsupervised test taking. North Carolina skated with worse I know, but we deserved what we got. You or I would have been straight kicked out of school

I wasn’t relating it to Tutorgate, I had Will Redmond and Renardo in mind....

What. Was the message? Force our hand and we’ll back down? Ineligible to 12 games and a fine is a big difference. Look at Renardo. He was given a value meal at McDonalds and lost 1.5 years.

It was disclosed to the NCAA early in the process. They told Wiseman and Memphis all was good. Then around opening night they changed their minds.

12 games is just the beginning. They have a full blown NCAA investigation coming that wasn't before.

The Renardo ruling was more harsh because he wasn't a one and done and they thought he was lying to them. NCAA rulings are based on their emotions. That is why it is so dangerous to fight them and lose.

Fair. Which makes the entire situation even more terrible. Ncaa just makes **** up as they go along case by case.

Yeah, I think 12 games is light and more than fair. However listen to the Memphis media and fans.... you would think they ruled the guy ineligible for the season.

Define “early in the process”. It was disclosed back in May of 2019, but I haven’t seen any information that anything was disclosed before that. The kid signed in November of 2018, 6 whole months before anything came out from the school. “Early in the process”, as far as from a recruiting standpoint, would be well before he signed and by rule probably before Memphis could even recruit him. It’s not like they can claim they forgot about their current head coach giving them a million 17ing dollars when he was still a booster. They went with the “ask for forgiveness instead of permission” route, and it bit them in the ***. Memphis is not the victim, and everybody (including the NCAA) knows that there was a lot more than the $11.5k that changed hands in his recruitment, regardless of what can be proven. I’m not sticking up for the NCAA either as they most definitely bungled the initial ruling, but the correct (ish) judgment was eventually made.

If that’s the case, and it seems to be, you’re right. A full blown program investigation after they went from irrelevant to the #1 recruiting class in the country is the last thing they needed
