Anyone have any good recommendations? Looking for something decent that I won't need a power source to use at a tailgate.

Linda got me the Ion Tailgater a few years back, and it's been a trooper. Unfortunately it's old enough that it doesn't have bluetooth, so I'm actually looking into whether I can daisy-chain it as I'd like to get a second unit. Either way, I highly recommend them.

You can always get one of these. Solar powered and you can charge your cell phone. I bought one last year, and it worked really well. Unfortunately, the rainy weather (PSU, UM, WISC games) limited the play time to 4.5 hours (without sun, charging a cell phone at the same time sucks the battery down). For the Indiana game, it worked great all day.

I bought the Alesis Transactive Mobular 7 or 8 years ago. At that time Alesis, Ion, and Pyle were brands that I was told were manufactured by the same company. They all had battery problems but then again, this was several years ago. I got a second unit a few years back but in the end, neither would hold a charge of very long although I adhered to the user manual guidance on recharging. I also felt the sound quality was only okay. These were really low cost PA systems. I am looking around for something new too so glad you posted and it sounds like the Ion may well have improved their system. I was down the shore this weekend and a friend had the newest Bose docking station on his patio. I would say that had better sound than my Alesis, irrespective of the volume. He also said the battery lasts for a dozen or more hours at higher volumes. One word of caution, my Alesis had a reported battery life of xx hours (I don't recall the number) but that was at moderate volume. Higher than that and the battery ran down much quicker. And I'm not talking about huge that that would blast people out, my units were not capable of getting anywhere near as loud as you hear some system in the parking lots--not that I'd want to be that loud anyway.
Been debating getting one of these units. I have fairly high end loudspeakers for DJ-ing (EV-115's), but these are kind of overkill for a tailgate, require AC power, and require lots of lugging to move and set up. I also have a Bose SoundDock portable player, but it only lasts about 4 hours and doesn't quite have enough oomph - actually it has enough oomph if nobody else is playing music at a high volume nearby, but there have been a few times there are neighbors with louder PAs. If they were playing good music, I wouldn't mind, but one game last year, this guy played Van Halen for about 30 minutes - breaks all my rules about DJ-ing - when there are more than a few people, playing one artist repeatedly is just wrong. Not looking to drown people out or annoy them with really loud music (i..e., if nobody else is playing music loud, nearby, I'd just play at a volume for our tailgate), but also don't want to be forced to listen to someone else's crappy music.
Anyway, I like that the Tailgater has 2 AC outlets, since I like to play music from my laptop, which needs AC power after 2-3 hours; the BlockRocker doesn't appear to have AC. That might be enough to sway me towards the Tailgater. I also might look into whether there are higher end units that put out better quality sound. $150 sounds almost too cheap for good quality, but I haven't actually listened to one closely.

i own an ion block rocker myself. while it is loud and long lasting, there are some options that are just as good and more portable.
