Anyone have any thoughts or advice on wireless dog fences or in ground wire fences? GPS? Seems like they all have their pros and cons.

Pretty reliable at keeping your dog in, but if ANY other animal wants on your property its not stopping them

Yep that is the problem. Your dog wont run away, but he is going to have a lot of friends come over to play that you might not like

I'm not sure, but I wonder if a wired dog fence could double as a robotic mower border.

As my dog has aged she has learned to stick around my yard and not wander without a fence, but ***** in the neighbors yard, they also have a dog, that ***** in their yard. If I could insert the Jeremiah Johnson nod meme I would. Be good to your dog and it will return the favor.

My Goldens would pay the shock to leave containment, then not attempt to re-enter the yard for fear of another shock. Only thing that was working was the $2000+ that I spent on materials to build my own privacy fence after spending $500 or so on alternatives. And they still dug under it. It's funny now, but it wasn't funny at that time. All good dogs are worth more than money to keep them safe, and you might gain some perspective by looking into how your dog's breed does with a wireless system.

The neighbor had one for his german sheperd. It worked for awhile but eventually started failing after thunderstorms. It scared the crap out of me one day as I was working in the garage, turned around and found it standing behind me. One other thing I noted is that people walking their dogs did not like it, as the sheperd would run right up there and start barking at them. There were some close calls as some dogs wanted to mix it up, with the owner holding theirs back best they could. A fence helps that a little as it's a visible barrier. Parents &kids walking to school didn't care for it. I don't know if the owner got complaints but he eventually built a wood fence and the dog is in the backyard now.

Due to zoning not allowing fences in our neighborhood, we have owned a wireless fence for 10 years through 2 sets of dogs. We’ve found it to works very well.

My neighbors lab routinely charges out of the boundary to give chase to squirrels, and he waits at the border until someone comes home.

Was walking in the neighborhood this summer and I walk by a yard with no fences. A huge dog comes charging at me from behind the bushes by the house. He stopped inches from me because apparently there was one of those hidden electronic fences. But no signs or nothing to indicate there was such a fence. Almost crapped my pants when I saw those fangs come charging at me and no visible barrier. If you put in one of those fences, make sure you put up the signs indicating there's a fence so passersby can see the sign.

Had two neighbors over the years that had them. One a Lab, the other a beagle. Both broke containment from time to time. Both were really friendly, not a big deal. Taking that hit never seemed to even slow them much especially chasing a 🐇

We really looked at the underground fence but decided not in a rural area so I built A fence the dogs have about 1/2 an acre to run around thats plenty of room for them to play

We were very glad we paid the trainer to do the initial training. He not only got the training started for the dog but he also trained us. It was worth it.

Doing the same. I have him trained well enough not to run away but he wants to say hi to everyone that walks by and we live in a corner lot

We used a company called: “Defence Your Pet” here in Omaha and we’re very happy with them. After the initial training It did take us till the 2nd week before we were fully comfortable with leaving both dogs out. Two different breeds and One got it right away, but the other one took a few more days. I’m guessing your Lab will catch on real quick.

That is a good point too. Depending on your dog they can scare the **** out of passerbyers with no fence

One other issue that I don't know how they resolved deals with the utility meter reader and UPS/Amazon people. Not sure how many neighborhoods have meter readers anymore, but my neighborhood has them.

I've always been more of a fan of a good 6 foot fence. I work an odd schedule and sometimes letting the pups out at 4 in the morning, is how it just works out. I keep my gates padlocked too, after kids next door get a toy or ball in the yard and leave my gate open retrieving it. I've had my dogs get loose 3X over 16 years, which I think pretty decent. But still 3X too many for me.
