This is a cornerstone mantra that I had been taught by my high school football coaches (Ohio H.S. HOF coaches, as a mater of fact) and one that I have tried to carry and emulate throughout my athletic career and professional life. It has served me well. I imparted it to the WaterGirl at the start of her athletic endeavors and I believe that she has benefited from its meaning and impact on her life as well. This axiom has great depth and relevancy, especially in this day and age of overwhelming, almost psychopathic need for self-indulgence and self-promotion when it comes to sports and competition in general.

In regards to the Outback Bowl loss of the 'Cats to Tennessee, I offer my sincerest congratulations to the victors on their impressive win. In addition, I congratulate Fitz, his coaching staff, the players themselves and their support teams (read: family & friends) for what they have accomplished, both collectively and individually, this season - within a "rebuilding year" - that truly delivered results over and above all pre-season expectations.

The competitive bar for the Northwestern University football program now has been re-set to a new, higher level. I can't wait for next season.

That game showed you just how far you have to go in order to compete with a good team. Thankfully for you, you play in the little ten.

FWIW to date all the teams that Northwestern beat which played in bowl games won their bowl games. (Stanford, Duke, Minnesota, Nebraska, and Wisconsin) Michigan's win today over SEC Florida and Ohio State's win over Notre Dame in New Year's Six play don't quite fit with your "little ten" contention either.

Those in SEC-land don’t have much going on in terms of sports other than college football. So they should be cut some slack in their never-ending quest to remind everyone that they are relevant in that aspect of sports.

How competitive can we be when our defense gets neutralized and we have to rely on McCall? These 3 embarrassing losses just kill the image of the program.

That's nice. Now run along home, and take the individual who likes your post along with you. This isn't your board.

I think our program will survive, and we certainly weren't the only B1G school that laid an egg in the bowl season. Michigan State looked like "little brother" again and Iowa was absolutely humiliated by a Stanford team that we beat. Even allowing for improvement on the part of Stanford, Iowa was abysmal for three quarters. McCaffrey ran around them as if they had their feet in cement. And it wasn't confined to the B1G. Florida, champions of the SEC East, got taken to the woodshed by a Michigan team that Ohio State waxed a few weeks ago.

The B1G's upper echelon is 3-3. The 3 losses coming by a combined 128-22 (Mich St, NU, Iowa). Michigan and Ohio St are carrying the conference this bowl season.

You mean other than recent championships (last decade) in men's basketball, women's basketball, baseball, and track.

You're right...all we are good at is football.

Basketball in the SEC is basically Kentucky and everyone else. We would kill you in any kind of league challenge. In wrestling, we would run you off the mats. Stick to the warm weather stuff.

All of the NU fans after the game were very nice. During the week this week you guys were all great except for the one group we encountered at Hampton Inn and Suites in Tampa. I elaborated on several other threads. It happened folks. This isn't some made up thing. They put doo doo in coffee strainers in the breakfast area on more than one occasion and cut our TN power T flag off my suburban and smeared doo doo on my windshield. Fact. It happened.

Yes, we all read your other posts - WTF are you expecting any of us to do about it? I'm at a loss as to why we need to keep reading this. Do you want us to apologize for something someone we don't know may have done to you, another person we don't know - would that make you feel better? It sucks that that happened, but what are you looking to accomplish by repeatedly posting this?

The Tennessee football team beat the crap out of us - we all saw it. Why the need to remain on our message board to flaunt it?

I live in SEC country, too. How do you: 1) control fire ants and dollar weed? 2) keep SEC fans away from your farm animals?

Thanks.

NU had a 10-win season, and the future is bright. Fitz is a very good coach, and the program is trending upwards. One main reason UT won the National Championship in '98 was a change in defensive philosophy resulting from the 1st class ***-kicking they received from Nebraska the year before. If you don't learn about your vulnerabilities, then you miss an opportunity to improve. NU will use what they've learned from this loss, and be much better moving forward.

You are right...the SEC hasn't won a basketball national championship since 2012, and have only won 4 College World Series since 2009. They've only won 5 straight Women's Gymnastics National Championships, and 4 Indoor Track NC's since 2010. They are the 2015 Women's indoor track champions, and won the last 2 Softball World Series. They are the 2015 National Champions in Women's tennis and Men's golf. Football IS ALL the conference has going for it.

You're talking to a school with a national fanbase. We probably have more alumni in California and Hawaii, neither of which are known for cold, than Tennessee does.

Now run along back to your own board. This is our board, where we discuss grownup stuff you wouldn't understand.
