Yea that's a nice mantra maybe for about 100 of our fans but I promise you it doesn't work in today's recruiting game. Don't believe me? Look back over the last 5 years at the top 25 ranked recruiting classes, I guarentee that 18-20 of them are the same schools over and over

I've made that drive to Happy Valley far too many times. It sucks...especially on the day of a game.
I understand, but answer me this, if your kid played college athletics there wouldn’t you make the trip to see them?
I think I would, but would my kid's friends and local relatives be eager to make that trip more than (at the most) once a year? The nearer the school, the more friends and relatives are going to see the kid play.
I have never done recruiting, but I would guess that a kid's major concern would be to balance the chance of playing (better at Rutgers) with the chance of being part of a winning team (better at, let's face it, almost everywhere else). My guess is that most kids, having been successful in high school, assume they will also be successful in college and would see themselves starting at the team that wins more. And probably many assume that their high school success and (they hope, college success) will lead them to the NFL and that their chances of being noticed by a scout are better at a winning program. (I wonder if anyone has data on whether being on a winning team is more likely to lead to being drafted.) It's no mystery why it's hard for RU to recruit.
Yes, but if he had a chance to play a hell of a lot closer instead, I would definitely push for that.
PSU was always the local option, up until the mid 80's, because there was no other big time option. RU was still mostly plying Lehigh and Yale and Bucknell or Princeton.
Now there is a big time option 3 hours closer.
I guess you didn’t notice the impact Greg Schiano had on signing NJ Top Recruits.
His 3 out his last 4 classes finished in the Top 40 in CFB recruiting.
It all started when he convinced Ricki Cook from Montclair to commit in 2001 and many more top NJ recruits followed suit and then it began. Our course Flood and Ash totally destroyed that.
If the scholarship count posted on this site and others is correct, Rutgers has at most 2 scholarships left. Do you take a QB with basically a 50% completion rating knowing that was with more than capable OL and WR corp (unlike what we currently have) or two grad level DL that can play right away. IMHO, we need DL badly else nothing may matter on Offense as other teams will just steamroll our defense.

There are better options out there with better stats. The SMU QB has monster stats.
Would take Winbush in a hearbeat. Need a dual threat QB to win games, especially at RU.
Totally agree. Not sure what the others are thinking. No way can I sit thru another year of AS at QB just being a statue and INT machine. Give me a mobile QB. I could care less his completion rate was 50%. He’s light years better than what we have right now.
What we need to do offensively is find ways to get our rb's the ball out in space.... Our receivers suck, we can try to spin it however we want but the truth is none of them have played up to par for whats needed in this conference. Our RB's have actually shown the ability to make plays when they have open space.
With a mobile QB it opens up the Option game which even NFL teams are now realizing is the future. As Section124 pointed out AS is a statue back their and at least with Wimbush it would give us the ability to roll the QB out and draw the defense away from our RB's. I don't expect miracles to occur but we should be able to win 4-5 games next season if we can at least get the QB to extend plays and spread out opposing defenses rather than stand back unable to extend plays and either get sacked or throw an int which is all we saw last year

Did you see the missed blocking on the OL? The brick hands, lazy routes and lack of aggressiveness in going for the ball of the receiving corp? AS was a true Freshman QB. Some help by those around him would have gone a long way. Langam and Snyder may push him out. Both were recruited by Ash and McNulty so at this point they wouldn't have a favorite.
I suggest you watch Brandon Wimbush highlights from 2017 season at Notre Dame. The guy can flat out fly and can outrun most of those missed blocks that probably will continue next year. Having a defense have to account for QB speed puts the offense at such an advantage. Plus he has a rifle of an arm too and threw some beautiful dimes.
He’s pretty much Gio on steroids. A backfield with him, Blackshear & Pacheco would be a pretty dynamic trio. It would be a lot to work with but a very different look from what we saw last year with AS or from any McNulty offense. Does he have schemes or philosophy to implement with a true dual-threat or run-first QB?
Thanks for the highlights; I even survived the awful sound track (I'm old, as you can tell!). With a highlight film like that, why is he transferring? Does he have an issue that the highlights don't reveal? I have to say I am not a big fan of running QBs; too apt to get hurt, I feel. He has to make it on his arm. His arm seems strong and accurate, but he must think he'll never start at ND, and I wonder why.
Accuracy issues. Only completed 49% of passes last yr and 52% this year. Offensive coordinator felt he wasn’t getting the ball to playmakers and ND was too talented not to be scoring a ton of points. Ian Book has hit on 70% of passes and the offense has really taken off despite his not being as dynamic of a runner/athlete.
He would be a huge upgrade to any of the QBs currently projected to be on the roster in 2019, it is not even debatable. We would have a legitimate shot to win 5-7 games next year with this kid playing QB and an improved defense. I have to think any posters who would be against this kid joining the team are either outright trolls or fans who actually want us to tank next year so that Ash gets the boot. The problem with the latter idea is that we have no idea who Hobbs will hire to replace Ash and when we will have another chance to win that many games. I believe you take it year to year and put yourself in a position no matter how much you dislike the coach to win as many games as possible. To me it is a no brainer, I want the chance to be rooting for Rutgers in a bowl game next year even if it means keeping Ash for a 5th year.

I can't see why any QB who has one year left to impress NFL scouts would come to a team whose OL can't protect and whose WRs can neither effect separation or, if they do get open, can catch. IMHO, AS is out QB next year. We can use these threads to dream of a different world but I think that is all it is, dream on.

Better options for us. But RU should not be too choosy if an experienced QB is genuinely interested in transferring here.
Our only QB with experience in the past year is Art. What if he wins the starting job and gets hurt? Experienced depth is sorely needed to elevate the competition and challenge him for the starting position.
Apparently the leading schools for Wimbush are Penn State, Mississippi State, and Rutgers.
