Willis starting tonight

Interesting distribution of minutes last night. 5 guys had over 27 minutes: Ulis, Skal, Murray, Lee and Willis.

3 others had between 11 and 15 minutes: Mathews, Poythress and Hawkins.

And then Humphries had 7 minutes and Mulder had 2.

All of that may include some temporary stuff. Poythress for example will likely get more clock as he gets back to full strength. But I'm thinking Willis will play more than commonly thought, and that Humphries and Mulder - and maybe Mathews - may play less than most were thinking.....

I'm sure briscoe won't play tonight. I hope Willis goes out and does great. Here's hoping he does not develop the josh carrier syndrome

the question with Willis is -- for me anyway -- can he be as good as Miller was for the 2012 title team?

I think he can be very similar in a very similar role (with less banging and rebounding but better open court / fast break skills than Miller had IMO)

Willis is looking better everytime he takes the court...still gets burned on d ocassionally but so is everybody else right now. If willis steps up his d, he will play a lot...and if this team steps up its d as a whole... lookout!

He deserves to start. You work hard. You get rewarded. Not only has he stepped up his offensive game but looks like he spent twice as much time in the weight room than anybody else on the team other than Briscoe.

I would like to see Willis at least develop into a player who could provide us what Wiltjer did on the 2011-2012 Championship team. A backup who could reliably come off the bench and drill your team a three or two per game.

I thought Willis played better defense last night. He deserves to start. Cal could hold Briscoe out tonight and have him healthy for Duke

I was more impressed with his defense last night than the fact he scored 14 in the first half which was great too. I watched him closely all night while he was on defense and he was working hard and not getting beat by his man. I'm sure part of his reward, if he does start tonight, was for his defensive effort as much as anything else. Cal values defense, we all know that.

Pleasantly surprised after 1 game (limited sample size), but he's got a long way to go match the contributions of Miller.

He reminds me more of Scott Padgett in so many ways.

Have not particularly been a Willis fan, but in that game, he looked like one of our Top 3 players. If we can get a big contribution out of him this year, it could be huge.

If he keeps up his shooting from last night then he deserves the start. If he is consistent UK's front court just became deeper.

I would have to disagree with the premise, because it sounds like you're basing it on whether or not his shots go in. Willis may or may not get significant time, but I've seen enough to think he's a player - not just a "driveway shooter." I would instead say that if he keeps up his best effort from last night (meaning the defense, deflections, steals, rebounds, assists, energy - and yes hitting a few shots inside or out) then he may very well deserve to start.

Could Derek Willis be another Larry Bird?

Yeah definitely. He's definitely Larry Bird 2.0. I mean they're games are so similar its scary. In fact Willis should be better than Bird was I tell ya what. Pffft. Come on man. I hope your playing. Cuz if you're not. You're on crack.

Look here though brothers. Willis is a different player this year. He's going to have a big time roll and a big time impact this year. I think he may average 10pts off the bench this year. But he's just an all around player. He's not just a 3pt shooter or just a scorer He's a good passer, he can rebound, Defend, he blocks shots, he's a high energy guy. And if he keeps this up and improves even more. I could see him getting drafted after his senior year.
