Starter or not, Willis will be a key component to this team. His 3pt shooting alone requires that he be on the floor. He stretches the floor. He opens up passing and driving lanes. He keeps opposing teams from being able to double down on someone like Bam.

Willis plays because he has a skill that really complements the rest of the main guys.

With three guards that can penetrate, you need a guy on the perimeter that can spot up and knock it down consistently. This will help keep the defense from packing it in, which will make it easier for the guards to score at the rim.

With an effective big inside, we need a guy that can keep the opposing team's 4 man out of the paint to give Bam room to operate inside.

I won't say he starts, but worst case, he is a 20+mpg contributor because of his shot, IMHO.

Now if Fox, Monk, and one of Briscoe or Gabriel shoot it well enough to keep the defenses from packing it in, then Willis might not play as much.

I just see Willis as bringing a valuable skill to the table that no one else has, at least not at his level anyway.

i dont dispute the fact that he has a skill. i just dispute the fact of how it really impacts the game. he played about 20 minutes a game last year. for all his great 3 point shooting...he made less than 2 a game. if he was draining 4, 5, or 6 threes a game...yeah that has huge value. and considering 70%+ of his shot attempts are threes and doesnt get to the line...his offensive value is limited.

while his defense and rebounding have improved, he still has short comings in that part of his game.

if WG or SJK can make 1 three a game...but give you superior rebounding/defense, and be better in other areas on offense...they should get the bulk of those available minutes.

willis has a significant role on this team and he will have big games for us, but its not like what he brings to the table is THAT impressive. its really a low bar when you break it down.

Willis is a Senior.. He's put the time in and he can flat play.. Regardless of the out of state 17 ur olds that have never had to rebound or play ANY defense. Knocking down 3 at a high clip and can throw down on offense or D boards. He starts.. So shut up n get back to work

I remember getting told this same thing about Miller when i said you all are crazy if you think Miller starts over MKG....I got blasted, but didnt take long to see who the better player was..Oh yeah i was right..
Cal don't care if you're a Sr ..He will play a Fr if their better

Maybe I'm wrong. Maybe there were a few people foolish enough to insist that Miller would start over MKG. Must have blocked it out.

I took heat for saying Liggins made a solid decision to leave bc MKG was going to take his minutes. I'm not sure how long it's going to take the rank and file folks to pick up on the fact that our superstar freshmen play over our role player upperclassmen.

Yeah sorry. Someone else mentioned it and I said my memory might be faulty. Just seems like such an idiotic take.

But I would have thought you had plenty support as well. The CW was that MKG would start.

yup....all the miller was SECT MVP stuff. senior leadership. all that stuff. plus i remember matt jones saying all summer how MKG wasnt doing that well (something like that).

its all good though. cal has won more games than any other coach since 2009. he will be successful doing it his way. fans can like it or not.

Cal played everybody with that MKG struggling bit. Cal talked MKG down and Wiltjer up over the summer.

He knew he could drive MKG to another gear.

I don't remember anyone, at all, thinking he would start and as a matter of fact, I believe cal stated early MKG was a starter. You've got a few contrarian wanna be smart asses on this board who love pretending the base is dumb and they are the brains. Just look around. Same one every time. It's a "northern"personality trait, a clue.

MKG was in cals back pocket since his days as a freshman. He was expected to grow to 6'10 or taller, and was a stud OAD from day one, at least by sophomore year. No one at all that I can remember expected Miller to start.
