Will Rogers

Long post and one last opinion before the season gets started. I think people are sleeping on Will Rogers a little bit- even in our own fan base. In six starts last season:

1,666 yards, 10/3 TD/INT ratio

So if you extrapolate that over a 13 game season:

3,610 yards, about a 22/6 TD/INT ratio

Not great yardage and TDs given how much we throw in this offense, but pretty impressive given the circumstances of us playing in a new offense with no spring and only SEC opponents (plus a really solid Tulsa defense in the freezing rain).

Charley brought up some great stats on OOLF. Will just needs to be more efficient down the field, and he will basically be right where Minshew was his senior year. The OL and WRs play a role in the too, but if Will has a higher completion % 20+ yards downfield, this offense will be effective. We don’t even really need to push the ball downfield too much more- just be more efficient when we do.

Let’s also not forget that he was just a true freshman. He had no spring practice and very limited summer workouts. He had a tough start to the season missing 2+ weeks of practice and games in quarantine (he stepped in during the UK game without practicing for about two and a half weeks). His best offensive weapons? Also true freshmen. This is a wild concept today when everyone wants everything to be a finished product immediately, but freshmen get better.

I still expect bumpy moments this season. The offense will look clunky at times, but I think by end end of the year, we look up and see that our offense has shown some real improvement. Probably about SEC average. 400-410 YPG and 29-30 PPG is my guess.

He struggles down the field because his arm strength just isn’t what it needs to be to make the longer throws in time.

I like Will as our QB, and I have confidence that he will do a good job for us.

He will play better this season than he did last season as a true freshman.

Plus, he's a coach's son, so he has lots of intangibles that help him to be a good leader.

If we average 30 ppg, I would expect an 8 win season, given expectations for our defense.

I expect him to improve as well. And comparing his arm strength to another QB is only relevant when taking the quality of DBs into account. The windows aren’t as large in the SEC

He has nice touch though which can make up for a lack of arm strength/velocity especially in college plus he can throw it at least 50 yards which is all you'll ever need 99.99% of the time throwing a football. Won't be any Doug Flutie hail mary's but that's when we send in the Greek.

Leach has been a P5 HC for 19 seasons. He has finished at less than 30 PPG three times:

Year 1 at TTU
Year 1 at WSU
Year 1 at MSU

He has scored 30+ PPG every other season. Does that guarantee we scored 30+ PPG this year? No, but I like what Leach’s 16 year sample size of offensive football says after you get through a tough year 1.

Its quite commonplace to see freshmen pitchers arms get stronger in college. Thus it isnt outside of the realm of possibilities for a quarterbacks arm to do the same. Did we not see Dak's arm get much stronger from his 1st season to his 2nd? And I will take sound decision making over arm strength everyday and twice on Saturdays.

Dak’s arm has gotten stronger and more accurate basically every year he has played QB since 2011. It’s pretty rare for a QB to improve his accuracy like that, but it’s laughable to assume Will Rogers’s arm won’t get stronger through development and time in the weight room.

Yeah, I guess we will all have to just wait and see how many MSU passing records "ol noodle arm" adds to his list this year. He has a pretty good list going so far considering that subpar arm strength****

Rogers will do great in this offense. If we keep him Sawyer may end up being the best QB state has ever had (stats wise)

I am sure Sawyer will reset the record book after Will does. I expect next year to be a real QB battle. I am a Will Rogers fan but Sawyer is going to be really good and will take this program to another level

I’ve mentioned a few times that I don’t have real
high expectations for this offense this season, but your next to last paragraph is what may prove me wrong. I mean, look at this list of players from last year’s roster:

Rogers - Fr
Marks - Fr
Johnson - Fr
Tulu - Fr
Walley - Fr
Heath - Year 1 from Juco
Cross - RS Fr

Then you got plenty of Fresmen or first year Juco guys on the defensive side of the ball too.

I’m still very much in wait and see mode with this air raid, and I may be throwing things later this afternoon, but it’s really no wonder that we struggled last year when you look at all that. Not to mention new coach, new offense, covid, etc.

Will (or any QB) goes as the OL goes in this scheme

If we struggle 5 on 3 to 4 again this year, I'm declaring Leach a giant bust. That offense won't work against anyone with any set of skill players.

Leach is a bust. You don’t hire 60-year old Key West retirees to coach in the SEC West. Period.
