This group should be more dangerous. Healthy Grant is a threat anytime he has it, Harris (and maybe Melton) stretch the field, Damon Mitchell should be able to get open. I am concerned that we lack a reliable threat in the middle to make tough catches and move the chains. Jerome Washington at TE is the obvious answer and it will be huge if he is a reliable piece. Sorta wish Tsimis had stuck around.

I have a feeling that the QB competition will be over early, with Bolin winning easily. I like Rescigno but he is more of a tight end than a quarterback, and what are the chances that Lewis is ready?

Side note - I think Jalen Chatman, especially if he enrolls early - is going to be the QB in 2018. He is a little short, but he is a very fluid athlete, he sees the field really well, and he is tremendously accurate. He is the first RU quarterback I have been excited about in a long time.

If you think Chatman will beat out Lewis, than I wonder if you have watched either.

Gio is more of a tight end then a QB? Chatman starting next year? What stuff are you on
Yes, I have always thought that Gio was miscast as a QB. He is a beast and could be a heck of a tight end. He is not much of a quarterback. No offense to him at all.

We'll see re Chatman. Perhaps calling him to start early is a stretch, but I absolutely stand by my prediction that he will start at RU at quarterback.

You know that besides Grant and Harris nobody that you named has more than 10 college receptions.

What is unknown is how much Lewis has benefitted from being so much bigger than most competition and how will that will translate to the college game. The little guys sometimes don't have as hard of a time adjusting but just have a lower "ceiling". See: Tom Savage:Chas Dodd.

Chatman was 1st team all-state in California, his numbers were ridiculous and he had a 4.0. If we set NJ bias/politics aside, and based on how this year goes for Lewis, I see no reason to assume at this point he won't be able to compete for the job. Most likely I would say the plan is Lewis plays this year, Chatman red shirts to put on weight - @185-190 and there are two years between them. On tape, they both look like TEC o bowl so not sure what can make this so "obvious".

As for WR, I think if Melton is the real deal and Martin/Hicks bounce back, we'll have above average B1G skill players.

I'm very optimistic for this year and have my fingers crossed for good line play.

Mitchell should make a big difference this year plus a QB that can make the throws on time. I am excited with the receivers we have in camp.

I agree that HS tape is tough - it all looks great.

I am always skeptical of guys who have bad completion percentage when the decks are stacked in their favor - winning teams, superior athletic skill compared to much of their competition. Rettig was such a guy. He never got a chance to perform in games, which maybe was unfair or maybe was because he was not an accurate passer. Don't know.

You are right about small QBs, but the ones who do pull it off are always very slick athletes - Flutie, Manziel, Russell Wilson. I am not making grand claims for Chatman, but he is a very nice looking athlete.

We'll see. It goes without saying that I would be thrilled to be wrong as Lewis starts for three years, throwing darts to a crafty slot receiver named Jalen Chatman.

Not sure and don't care who starts at QB. Any of them have to be an improvement over what we've seen the last few years. Kill should be a big help in developing all of them.

Johnny Manziel was a 3 star recruit who was somewhat overlooked because of his size. He destroyed HS football and should've been a 5 star. Chatman has video game numbers. I don't care who you're playing, 52 touchdowns and 9 interceptions is insane. And I agree, First team All State in California is no joke. I like Lewis a lot. The only thing that concerns me a little bit is his passing stats were pedestrian compared to Wimbush in the same offense. He did well running the ball but he was also bigger than everyone. Not sure he can run through people like that in the B1G. But again, I think with coaching he could be the equivalent to the Ohio State QB's.

Kill should coach him well. I hope Kill stays around for a few years, too.

Chatman defintely has great upside. If Lewis doesn't redshirt and Chatman does he should be able to start at least 2 years for us when Lewis graduates. The way things are looking we'll finally have some depth at QB. Nova has been our best QB since whenever he walked on campus, his level of talent will be the floor for the upcoming Quarterbacks

I have watched both on film, neither extensively. Lewis looks the part for sure - good athlete, big, big arm, mobile. I worry about his accuracy. Jalen Chatman just really looks like a football player to me. Lord

agree about Chatman. I know I am going to get killed for saying this but when I watch him he reminds of Charlie Ward from FSU. Just something about him. As an aside I really think Coach Kill was our biggest signing in a long time

These guys need to produce before you start saying they are better than anyone. They have the potential to be. And Teel was the best QB we had. In terms of talent, it was probably Savage or McMahon.

The whole Savage thing was a huge shame.

I respected Ryan Hart's game. Solid college QB who did well with medium talent. And I have fond memories of Ed McMichael slinging it to Dorn and Odell, though I was just a lad.

Flutie was a much better athlete and more mobile.
Yep. I liked Chas - a gamer and a really tough kid with a gunslinger's mentality, at least before Schiano ground that out of him. But he kind of reminded me of myself as a football player: a little too small to be that slow. Still he made more of it than most.

Mike McMahon was a stud. Too bad he played with little talent. Good Nova is the floor. Bad Nova was bad but not Laviano bad.

I remember the ball going through Odell's finger tips near the end of the game at the Meadowlands where they almost upset 'Bama

I was there. Tremendous game. Bama players were intimidated but their coaches knew how to win. I think the play you refer to was end of the first half.

No one is talking about the O line. Above average skill positions hasn't been much of an issue at RU. We haven't had good blocking for awhile. It starts with the line. WRs, backs and QBs are secondary IMHO.
Of course that is right. We have been pushed around on both sides of the ball and football is plainly won and lost at the line of scrimmage. This thread just wasn't focused there.

On that topic - I think our OL play may be slightly improved, but if we have injury problems, fold up the tent.

They aren't going to be dangerous if nobody gets blocked. The QB can't get the ball to playmakers in space if he's under 900 lbs. of opposing d-linemen.

Agudosi and Patton, both with underwhelming RU careers, signing NFL contracts speaks to how bad our QB play has been recently. Play calling was obviously also an issue.

It's hard NOT to sign an NFL contact nowadays if you have typical size and speed combined with expanding training camp rosters by 320 spots (10 per team effective 2010 I think). The NFL is so cookie cutter they care more about that than actual production. Let me know if they make a roster or are more than a 1 year practice squad player.

Yea it is but these guys made it to training camp and could make the team. Arians sounded upset because he couldn't figure out why a 6'6 receiver with a vertical out in space never played. What if Agudosi played at USC, he would've been a f'ing superstar surrounded by all that talent.

Chatman doesn't have the physical tools of Lewis (which can be said about a lot of QB prospects) but the kid is a gamer. Which is kind of important at the QB position if you ask me lol. Not saying Lewis isn't a gamer just saying don't sleep on Chatman. The kid is poised, accurate and makes plays. May the best player win the job once JC gets here.

Disagree. Not ever 6-6 kid is going to be a superstar because of their size. You can either produce or you can't. Carroo smashed records here with 4 OCs, average running game and average QBs

I understand your point but this 6'6 wideout is turning heads in a NFL setting. Your insane if you think AgudosI wouldn't be a star if he had McDonald throwing to him. The Cardinals obviously see potential in the kid.

Amen...........it all comes down to this. If the QB has the protection we will do fine but good QBs and WRs don't mean squat if the blocking isn't there.
