Why Zone?

Can someone explain this to me?

We knew statistically they were shooting the ball well, what in the world does a zone do for you except neutralize your rebounding advantage?

We weren't quick enough to defend them man-to-man the other day and they were killing us from three. So, you go zone to force them off the three point line.

A 2-3 zone forces people of the 3 point line? That’s news to me 🥴

Boeheim at Syracuse has been using the 2- 3 zone for decades with many players the height of Rutgers players.
Syracuse has always given up more 3pt attempts than most teams.

Last year they were like dead last in 3 pt attempts given up.

Even that aside, comparing Rutgers randomly deciding we’re going to go into a zone vs Cuse long history of zone is funny.

Minnesota took us to the woodshed defensively, and gave Maryland a blueprint.to beat our defense. RHJ 115 vs Minn, Geo Baker 131, Paul 133, Caleb 127, Cliff 119, Reiber 125, Mag 125, Hyatt 132

VS Maryland, Baker 121, *Caleb 97, *Ron 112, *Paul 106, *Cliff 104, Hyatt 120, *Mag 107, everyone.else 120s with limited minutes. We had to try something different and did work for some possessions, without Geo or Hyatt.

I dunno. The blueprint Minnesota provided was take a lot of threes and make them. That way of beating Rutgers defense as always been there.

And Pikes solution to this is let’s run a 2-3 zone.

It honestly screams of “**** it lets just run a zone”

If you’re trying to force them off the three point line with a zone it’s typically a 3-2 or 1-2-2. When we went zone, we were playing a 2-3, which usually has the opposite effect.

My observation: When a team is making 3 pointers at will regardless of man-to-man or zone defense, you need to move quickly to guard the shooter....and make them pass the ball or dribble.

Maryland's small point guard was launching from way out...you need to rush out to him defensively when he gets the ball to make him uncomfortable...force him to move or pass the ball...and force them to shoot inside the 3-point line....if they make a 2-point shot attempt (2 points is better than 3 points and you have a chance to play defense).

You can over-cover one of the two 3-point shooters and try to force a third player to shoot the ball.

Lastly, we need to get more fouls early in the second half by going to hoop.
Had we done that, we could have been shooting fouls shots (stopping the clock - extending the game) after the few stops we made on defense in the final 4 minutes.

Desperation. Not only were we unable to defend them man-to-man, but we couldn't get past them on offense either. We have length but lack team speed/quickness.

I can only imagine the board reaction if Pikes went 40 minutes straight man and didn’t try anything to change-up the flow.
